What Prince songs mean the most to you, and why?

Tonight, I was thinking about how there a handful of Prince songs that have a lot of meaning to me.

Little Red Corvette because it was the first video I saw on MTV of Prince's and when I became a fan.

Cause and Effect, the end of 2009, I sent LotusFlow3r Support an email, requesting they forward it on, which they said they would, and I asked Prince twice, "Where are you?" And said some other things. I had mentioned we seek answers to questions, when we feel lost or alone, and we may look to others or to an organization and think they have the answers we seek, when we had the answers all along - and that he had those answers all along. The song was first played in Feb. of 2010 on The Current. I know it's probably nothing to do with that email, but at the time, it seemed too coincidental with the "I am here, where are you?" said twice in the song and the "I am what I am, because and effect" but it made that song special to me.

Guitar, because as I've mentioned on here before, it flowed between the channels when originally released, and I had sent PP7 on NPGMC a link about EMDR therapy and wondering whether it would work with music. Guitar was released not long after that with that flowing between channels before he changed it later without that back and forth.

Free Urself, Prince had tweeted about some Free Urself t-shirts, asking if we were interested. I responded, requesting that he release the song, because one week with it (Purple Pick of the Week) wouldn't be enough. He retweeted my request and later deleted it, of course. But when he released the t-shirts, he said, "Ask and ye shall receive..." and then later he tweeted the link to the song and said, "Btw - link to song for download - : )".

Those 4 songs mean something to me for those reasons.

Other songs mean a lot to me for various reasons, too, but I wonder. What songs mean the most to you and why?

Sometimes it snows in april.
I lost my cousin who was my best friend to that big disease with a lil name. Right around the time parade came out. My aunt gave me his music collection and it was the first time i heard the song.

I'm so sorry about your loss. I lost a friend to that same disease. It's a hard way for any one to go. sad It sounds like you were meant to hear that song, though.

My Love Is Forever

Count The Days

Something In The Water

these either marked the beginnings or endings of the most important relationships in my life...either lyrically or chronologically those 3 songs connect to those relationships, and always will...good and bad...

Free. Without going into great detail, I used to fall asleep to that song with a speaker under my pillow. When it ended, I would rewind, and play it over and over until I crashed. On a side note, jam boxes with detachable speakers were the best smile.

Erotic City. I mean, what's to say. Coming of age with a partner who was also into Prince? Damn, thanks, P.

I Hate U. Girl, you know who you are. That shit stung. Like, couch-locked stung. Call me.

Do Me, Baby. That yearning and desire that doesn't necessarily come to fruition. Or maybe it does. All part of the experience and P nailed it with this one. Hit me in the heart from day one.

But, I dunno, I feel like every song between 1999 and Chaos comes with some kind of memory. For example, I remember when Raspberry Beret was going to debut on MTV and we played ball that day before going to my girlfriend's crib for the premiere. Or the first time me and my boy listened to Pussy Control in his garage. And then subsequently being disappointed in the album version of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. Or singing The Beautiful Ones to a girl on the phone when I was in high school razz. It's just...endless smile.

Diamonds and Pearls. My husband introduced this song to me when we were dating, some time around 2012, I think. I loved the song at first listen. This is the song that made me fall in love with Prince, although I was too preoccupied with my grad school studies to really dive into Prince’s music much further. I loved D&P so much that I wanted it to be the first dance song at my husband and I’s wedding. He vetoed it because he (erroneously) thought the song was about Prince loving two women since Diamond and Pearl both appear in the video. However, D&P was on our wedding reception music playlist. This, in a nutshell, is why Diamonds and Pearls is significant to me.

Good songs. I never had a Prince song that was significant with a relationship (good or bad). I've never been sure why that it is because so many of Prince's songs speak to me on different levels, but they were never involved with a relationship. I've had other bands, other songs, that are definitely tied to relationships, though.

I used to sleep with a radio under my pillow, too. I lived out in the middle of nowhere Missouri, and the only time I could pick up a good rock station was late at night. During the day, it was country and only country. At night I picked up a station out of Little Rock. But Prince wasn't performing and on the radio yet, when I was little. eek

Great list, though!

I love D&P. You should have put your foot down with your husband and insisted on D&P! lol I'm glad you did get to listen to it on your wedding day, though. How beautiful.
