Guitar playing vibrato and his 1998 1999 period playing

Whenever i hear some critics regarding Prince the guitarist its always that his vibrato is too fast and its more like tremble than real vibrato.what do u think about that? do you think Prince didn't practise guitar during 1998 1999 period?all his solos during that time are very unispired, notes are not clean and the way he was pressing strings is much more lighter compared how he played b4 and after that time frame.examples are Cafe ade Paris and Rave 2000 concerts and everything else during that period.and pls dont name Motherless C
hild as a highlight of that era because even that sounds weak co

Idk. I don't play guitar. So to my uneducated ears he sounds just fine smile I guess being ignorant works to my advantage in this case at least shrug

As a guitar player, Motherless Child is technically and melodically fantastic, I disagree with the "weak" description by far.

His vibrato was INSANE.

P's vibrato was good....His playing in the late 90's was cool, but a bit over processed. I've said in past threads, but I hated it when P used the Floyd Rose...Yeah he was making the "dolphin" sounds, but Steve Stevens, Adrian Belew and Neal Schon were doing that in the early 80's...I liked his guitar stuff with the 3rd Eye Girl project...his VOX guitars (?) were nice.

I really liked his guitar playing in the early 80s (Hohner and Clouds?) and in the last 5 or so years of his life (Vox). He seemed more ‘guitar angry’ in a good way to me. I didn’t care for those Vox guitars that he was using at the end but they were made for rock and he made them sound great. To each their own.

As for his vibrato, it was quite fast but, in live shows, I could never tell if he was using that Boss pedal or not.

His whammy bar Use was very hit or miss.
.
He just about ruined an otherwise great solo on Joy in Repetition on It Ain’t Over.
.
On the other hand, he used it to great effect at the super bowl.

To me he sounded very unispired during his vox phase but not bad as he was during Rave era.I think whammy bar on Joy in Rep 2002 aftershow sounds great.the only time he sounded a bit amaterish with whammy was on 777 9311

Vibrato is such a personal thing, there's no right or wrong. Personally I always liked his vibrato - it's a bit over the top and "frantic" sounding but it is completely a part of his sound. As for technique, Prince was always evolving and experimenting as a player but I don't really hear the technique issues you mentioned, he was always a sloppy player but really creative all the same.

On a more critical note tone in the mid to late 90s was pretty horrible, he was messing around with some cheesy effects. And I would say the NPS / Rave era was one of his weakest periods creatively.

Why u think he was sloppy player? Listen to purple rain 1990 nude tour japan very clean and inspired playing than listen to rave version.rave was very sloppy he didnt practise guitar during that era

I agree with ian. P's tone in the late 90's was bad...Too much unclear, saturated gain..it made his tone very muddy...and the processing on top of that made it sound like he was playing thru one of those cheap ZOOM pedals....I also didn't like that Digitech/Whammy pedal he used either on "The Undertaker" either.

His playing evolved over time. Ideas got better, playing skill wildly varied.

I think he peaked on lead guitar in the 80s. He got very sloppy when it came to lead playing as time progressed. His ideas got better, but his physical skills diminished a bit.

The only instrument he stayed consistent on was bass. He actually improved over time. He was an amazing bassist. Far better on bass than on any other instrument he played.

Take his drums as an example. The guy who played the drums on Bambi was amazing, especially as he starts going off at the fade out. Contrast that with his sloppy drum playing post 90s. In the 3rd Eye Girl days there was a short video of him playing drums in his tangerine outfit. Sloppy as hell and he accidentally hits a drum mic in the middle of a very easy fill that he was somehow having issues landing.

The physical aspect of playing instruments is exactly like a sport. You have to constantly work on it. Prince himself said he didn't practive anymore, he just played with people. That will certainly keep your skills passable, but not necessarily sharp. These are facts.
