Yep, parts 2 and 3 have some of his greatest stuff ever as a producer/arranger in my opinion while still being edgy instead of a safe top 40 mix (like Cream which is perfect, but also perfectly safe).

And, the way he ironically changes to the bitter violent persona, and wicked funky beat, while the original chorus of the song still echoes out of key, fits with his always surfacing themes of dualing morality vs sin... just like the parts of the purple rain tour where he talks about God and then turns on a dime theatrically and says, do you want me? to the audience.

Thank you Se7en, I thought I was the only one who didn't like the extended version of "I wish u heaven". The album version was beautiful and perfect. All the goofy stuff added took away from the song IMO. Like you said, the added stuff would have been fine on some other song.

I'm glad we can have different viewpoints on this. I find the album version to be very one-note. The 12" completes the trilogy of this song for me.

Pt 1 - the beautiful (yet kinda one-note) album version/single version
Pt 2 - the heavenly dance part
Pt 3 - the Take This Beat part

Thieves in the temple - the long version is MUCH better.

I think there's got to be an A-level version of the Lovesexy album in the vaults - the reason I never completely loved that album is that it felt like a lot of compelling fragments that never really got a chance to breathe.

I agree with many others that Thieves In The Temple feels absolutely lacking and incomplete in its album form. 12" or nothing on that one. And Mountains comes close to that for me...I love the album version but when those horns kick in on the extended version it just becomes epic. And while not exactly extended versions, the "Universal Love" and "Funky Stuff" remixes of Space are equal to if not better than the album version.

You just have to listen to the full length versions of the editted tracks from the 1984-1988 period to understand that the guy was breathing music night and day. The public got a glimpse, but will never appreciate his sheer love for the jam and carefree attitude Vs 'singles' and 'formats'.

Although it took till 1993 to boil over, the post 1999 album period clearly led to him feeling constrained.

I don't know if it's "much, much better", but I absolutely love the extended version of "Paisley Park". All that extra guitar is just fabulous.

said it many times, in the 80's the extended versions were way better than the 3 minute version. Little Red corvette, Let's go crazy etc.., etc.., almost always were superior to the radio friendly version and it's a reason that the alternate, full versions were placed on cd in the 90's, there must have been some demand, that plus the b-sides.

I love so many of the extended versions . . . Mountains, She's Always In My Hair, La, La, La, He, He, Hee, etc. Actually, I love all of them with I Wish U Heaven being my only exception.

Maybe it's because the album version is one of my favorites?

Would have been cool if the extended parts were titled something else, but "similar" -- like how the variations of New Power Generation (Loveleft Loveright, Get Off, The Lubricated Lady) are separate but part of the original too.

Let's Go Crazy extended IS superior to the album version. It lifts that song to some next level stuff. The stomped on piano, the mumbling repeat of the intro, the funky hand/finger flicking part, and the cow bell. They all add up to mad genius stuff NO ONE else would have the guts to put in a #1 hit song. This song is the EPITOME of what separates Prince from others, and what is VASTLY missing in music today...taking risks and being adventurous even with the most commercial things....

On some of the PR concerts boots I have, Prince puts the stomped-piano section in Delirious, and it still works!

I think the reason that it works better in Let's Go Crazy, along with a background chanting/moaning, is that is does play to the "crazy" that's mentioned in the song title.

I never cared to much for the 1 2 & 3 either. I Wish U Heaven is perfect in it's simplicity. The 1 2 3 was like a totally different song.
