Prince category on Jeopardy! + RuPaul's Drag Race mention of Vanity 6

Prince was a category in tonight's Jeopardy!'s double jeopardy round. Alex mentioned it being his 60th birthday. Here were the answers:

$400 - Prince will forever be associated with this, a song, an album and a movie that won an Oscar and two Grammys. *

$800 - Prince's pet birds Majesty and Divinity still live at Paisley Park & remind visitors of this song, Prince's first no. 1 hit.

$1200 - One of the first videos by a black artist to get regular airplay on MTV was inspired by this one, a Pink Mercury Marauder; Prince was vaulted into superstardom as the song rode up the charts. *

$1600 - As a songwriter, Prince had the top 2 spots on the Billboard charts in 1986 when "Kiss" was No. 1 and this Bangles hit was No. 2.

$2000 - The threat of nuclear war inspired Prince to write the lyrics, "Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die anyway", but as this song also reminds us "life is just a party, and parties weren't meant to last". *

* these answers were filmed at Paisley Park with different items in the shot. The first in front of the PR bike and the Oscar, the next being near the 1999 platinum record, and the last in a studio with Prince's 1999 era shiny purple trenchcoat.

See below for RuPaul's Drag Race reference tonight.

ALSO: On RuPaul's Drag Race, the two queens in the bottom had to lip sync to Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl".

It concerned me that 2 of these really bright, young people (late 20's) whose knowledge bases showed depth and breadth, did not seem to have any clue about Prince. The third had superficial knowledge. They did not choose the Prince category until almost forced to. Wow, how do we keep his legacy alive? In keeping with that theme, my 24 y/o daughter only tolerates my Prince enthusiasm. Her boyfriend (also 24) is very musically sophisticated, had to "study" about Prince because he knew I was a fan. He had little or no knowledge prior.

This boyfriend won't listen to a new Radiohead album unless he can do so alone, with great headphones and on a really good sound system. What happened in such a short time? P just died. I'm not expecting them to know about Ray Charles or Little Richard etc. Yikes!

They seemed to be a bit younger, so I didn't fully expect them to get all of them. I was worried that they wouldn't get to the category at all. But when the one guy responded with "Little Deuce Coupe" I just wanted to jump through the television. haha

"Little deuce coup" lol lol lol I was screaming at the TV when the guy said that! Apparently, according to Jeopardy, Prince only had 2 albums, "Purple rain" and "1999" lol lol

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

And they still barely got what they got. That's not Jeopardy's fault. If they made em harder I guess nobody would know the question. lol

You're forgetting how it goes here. These people are not stupid. They research things to the deepest degree for any category on the show. But the Prince category was meant as a tribute to him on his birthday, not to be taken the same as "Latin 101" or "'EU'phemisms" or whatever. It was a lighter category like "80s TV" or something. You can't go deep cuts on a game show. No one is going to get who Susannah is and that "Adore" maybe or may not have been written about her.

As far as the contestant answering that way, he knew he was wrong as soon as he said "Lit..." I think he tripped on his words. Not everyone is a Prince fan... but they should be. LOL

I thought it was trippy how RDR was aired on 6/7, had a twin-theme runway challange & lip synced to nasty girl

There has been a couple of prince's references earlier in season 10, as well as vanity 6/prince being mentioned in previous seasons

It was definitely interesting, another one of those things that would never have happened a few years ago. Also interesting to note the caption for the performance was courtesy "The Prince Estate" vs. courtesy Warner Brothers. My roommate had no idea V6 was a Prince thing... kids these days.
