The "Rude Boy" era runs from "Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999" In all honesty this is where Prince started evolving, Dirty Mind was where Prince showed off his iconic trench coat and studds at the top right of the coat and the "Rude Boy" button and also his first none album B-Side. Controversy dropped the bikini and leg warmers, Prince also started using purple or a purple-ish colour, he also formed The Time. 1999 Prince started rocking full on metalic purple trench coats, ruffle shirts, lace, eraly Purple Rain, Vanity 6, The Time, Jamie Starr and The noituloveR.

The Rude Boy era is Princes most crucial era and my personal favourite era from the 80s.

Very legitimate points. Dirty Mind is arguably Prince's defining album and the "Rude Boy" is arguably his definitive persona.

I would maybe narrow the "Rude Boy" persona more specifically to Dirty Mind, based on the severity of the song lyrics for that album, stage outfit, and band dynamic. By Controversy, he was polishing the act a bit more, switching to the white button down and bow tie - still somewhat raunchy with Head, but less so than during DM. For 1999, he really was polishing his look and becoming more sophisticated, which I'm sure tied in with his plans to "cross over".

I remember my brother brought home the Dirty Mind album and I thought "who is this on the cover?" Is that a girl or a guy. Why is he wearing underwear and heels? Is that that Sylvester dude? All those questions sudsided, when I heard the first track and I said yes. Yes. Wherever this dude is going, I'm listening. It sounded raw, dangerous, young, and unpredictable. Man, what I would give just to go back to that time for one day just to experience again.
