Not surprised. Brit bands were trying to go after popstars of time and create a revolution of sorts. Like when Pulp dissed MJ or some of the outlandish shit Oasis said. I remember hanging out with the guy from Jesus Jones and he was talking about how his band was the future and he dissed Eric Clapton. He was playing a college. I was thinking DUDE! Eric Clapton wouldn't even let you carry his guitar.

IIRC Blur were sat at a table near Prince at that Brit Awards, and spent the night throwing bread rolls at his table. Later that week they tried to get into a Prince Aftershow, only to be met with a bag of bread rolls handed to them by the bouncers. I hope that story is true. That's what I remember reading somewhere.

haha, well played Prince.

I dont care if Prince demanded that you show up in a diaper, socks with sandals and a ball gag. You show up for the opportunity to work with one of the greatest musicians ever. Its fucking insulting. Show some respect and dont smoke in someones house that doesnt smoke themselves.

I sort of agree but also it could have been the kiss of death. Now recording and jamming and stuff going into vault that would have been cool. But if Blur where to work with Prince early on and release something the career could have gone different for a guy like Albarn. Even Gorillaz would have been perceived differently.

Yeah, Albarn's career is going pretty swimmingly. He's a millionaire who does what he wants, records with all sorts of legends and releases loads of music, he regularly tours, sells out theatres and occasionally even bigger. He's able to walk down the street without getting mobbed (although he'll probably get noticed outside of the US).

but hey, Blur could have been as big as the Three O'Clock if they'd only worked with Prince, right?

DarkKnight1's reaction reminds me of Prince not turning up for the We Are the World recording. He had his reasons - from his perspective they made sense, but plenty of people didn't care about his perspective.

By Parklife Blur was big but the popularity tailed off and they were uncool. Then they came back. I think of they worked with Prince the would be known as the band that worked with Prince and that would be covered in every article. Prince on Gorillaz stuff by the time Albarn was more established would have worked I think, cuz Albarn is kind of a legend now. Timing is everything and I think if Blur would have failed on 5th album they would go down as wankers.

Of course, this won't get any aggreement here but it's just a fact that Blur were more relevant than Prince in 90's. Did anyone actually notice Prince's music output then? I remember working at a record store, and playing "Cream". I know now that the song was tame in comparison to the standards of the day; and was quite rightly ridiculed by my co-workers at the time.

If we're talking mid-90's, then Albarn had every right to turn Prince down. It would have knocked hs street cred back quite a bit.

The Great Escape and 13 are tied for my favourite Blur albums but really anything from Modern Life is Rubbish up to 13 is my favourite when i'm listening to it at the time, it's a damn good run. Think Tank has it's moments as well, Out of Time is beautiful

Think Tank is an amazing album, full of... moments like you said. 'Out of Time' is pure magic and so is 'Caravan'. Damon and Prince definitely have that 'magic' in common.

Specifically? Nothing, of course. But not all of us are as literal minded as you. We like to put things in context. Examine things. It's called critical thinking. I'm glad you're not in charge of anything.

well I can't speak for the US view but over in the UK and Ireland their popularity peaked with the Great Escape, but by then it was very much a teen thing and yeah, their critical respect sank like a stone about six months after that release. Their sales stayed fairly solid though, Beetlebum got to number 1 in 1997, Song 2 number 2 and they clawed back critical respect over time. Factoid I like: Tender was kept off the UK number 1 spot by Hit me Baby One more Time!

Prince on Gorillaz would have been great! but, hmm, can't see Prince allowing that to be released even if Damon turned up and they jammed together.

The "britpop years" is probably the sound Blur were most associated with, but actually the album Blur and 13 were very experimental and have a much dirtier, raw sound about them. They were clearly happy to throw off the Britpop shackles at the expense of sales. Those two albums are pretty awsome too and don't sound dated at all.

Prince would have definitely noticed them at the Brit Awards in 1995 (they won 4). And they would have noticed him too when he collected his Award for best International Male Solo Artist. There is a mention of him by Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer in a passing chucklesome comment on this video, just before giving Blur their award. lol

Well done if you can spot Prince amongst the seated guests (I can't).

Would have loved Gorillaz and Prince. I think that would have worked well. Can you imagine if they created a character based on Prince! They were pretty much unknown during the Great Escape in USA though they did play a few dates in major markets, they are a club act here, I remember they played NYC and I think LA. Much like Kaiser Chiefs that music doesn't go over as big here. I believe Canada/Much Music were still playing Blur and more supportive. Song 2 was popular here and they are known for it, unfortunately many people in USA don't know Parklife era. I remember seeing them live I believe thinktank era and people were there for Song 2. When they played TGE tour I remember it being a sea of teen girls at the shows. Gorillaz on other hand are popular here and I would think they could easily fill theaters. Go to any mall in USA and you will usually see Gorillaz stuff at Hot Topics. I remember seeing Gorillaz too and Supergrass, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, Elastica all smaller gigs here in States.

Remember watching that award show and seeing Dave with "Dave" written on face and Blur guys looking like they shopped at a Tommy Hilfiger. GAP sale.. Polos and khakis and thinking no no no no. When Albarn accepted the award and did nod to Oasis that has to be the lowest moment but oh well crazy drinking and drug era.

Yeah I thought that whole moment was a a little bit cringing, they were so young and silly lol... Personally Blur were always my favourite of all the Britpop contestants. Many probably view them as part of the same Britpop bag but Blur and Oasis seemed like day and night to me. Blur's sound was more southern (England that is), light and and uplifting while Oasis represented the dark industrial North. I guess you could have drawn a similar difference between the Red Hot Chili Peppers and say Pearl Jam (with different music styles and cultural contexts of course) but basically the RHCP's music was more extroverted in comparison with Pearl Jam's darker sound... Going back to the Brits award show it would be good to see some footage of the Prince moments; I was in the States at the time and never had a chance to see it at all.

Ah the dark industrial north? But what about the song 'Northern Lites' as one example?!!! I'm sorry but Noel Gallagher nor Damon Albarn are capable of a song on that level; neither can hold a candle to Gruff Rhys' genius. innocent

I was mostly referring to Oasis... I think the Super Furry Animals are a breed apart plus they're from Wales so not really the North as we see it here even though it almost reaches Liverpool. Northern Lites has more of a Carribean sound anyway lol.

SFAs I never considered them part of the britpop scene but they spawned from it. Like Kaiser Chiefs, both bands were heavily Blur influenced. In one word SFAs is possibilities. I do love Nothern Lites and some other hardcore Prince fans on here are passionate about them.

Since by definition you are a Super Furry Animal, I now feel inspired to rate all their albums. smile

10 - Fuzzy Logic

9 - Radiator

9 - Outspaced

8 - Guerrilla

9 - Mwng

10 - Rings Around The World

9 - Phantom Power

9 - Love Kraft

9 - Hey Venus!

9 - Dark Days, Light Years

This band are consistent, probably my all-time fave. Why... well their albums average over 9. Now if the Beatles hadn't done slightly shitty covers (mostly) on their early albums, or REM hadn't lost their muse somewhat in their latter career, then maybe it would be different contest. Oh and any band that has only 3 or 4 albums to their name can't be considered.

Of course there are also P fans around here who only seem to like janet/michael jackson, or george michael, or some other has-been solo artist.
I can't even be in the same room as these people, let alone have a conversation with them. They smell neutral
