Not 1 but 2 new Prince Albums (first on September 28)

Two new Prince albums on the way, with more to come as advisers dig into vault - Twin Cities

Not one, but two, new Prince albums are in the works, and the first even has a solid release date of Sept. 28.

-

Warner Bros. Records – Prince’s label during his years of peak popularity – is behind the fall release, with streaming service Tidal set to issue its own previously unheard work from the Purple One in 2019.

Estate adviser Troy Carter is overseeing the Warner Bros. project and spoke to Variety about it, although he offered more teases than actual concrete news. He said the first priority was “organizing the vault and finding out what music exists, what footage exists, photos, personal notes, letters. Prince basically saved everything, so there are decades of music and video and artifacts, but it takes long time to go through each one of those and research the historical context: where is this from, who did he collaborate with, where was it recorded, what year, was it the final version?”

While declining to identify whether it’s a concert, an unreleased album, a compilation or something else, Carter said it was “time-specific” and that “all of us fell in love with it and decided this was special enough for fans to hear. So we’re putting the final touches on it.”

So far, Warners has been the only label to officially release “new” Prince music. It added the 1982 track “Moonbeam Levels” to the “4Ever” compilation released in November 2016, issued a deluxe version of “Purple Rain” last summer with 11 vault songs and released Prince’s demo version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” two days before the second anniversary of his death in April.

As for Tidal, Prince partnered with the beleaguered streaming service to release what would become his final two albums, “Hit n Run Phase One” and “Hit n Run Phase Two.” But after his death, Tidal took his estate to court, claiming the company’s deal with the Purple One included a third album as well as streaming exclusivity to Prince’s back catalog.

The estate and Tidal have since worked things out and it’s a safe bet the record next year will be “Hit n Run Phase Three,” featuring new songs Prince recorded in 2014 and 2015. It is also possible the material could date as far back to the mid-’90s, when Prince parted ways with Warner Bros. Whatever the case, Tidal will have the exclusive on the new work for two weeks, after which time the estate will handle a physical release.

“Our only goal is to share Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted,” Tidal owner Jay-Z told Rolling Stone. “We will continue to respect and honor Prince’s enduring legacy and wishes with this new collection.”

While it’s taken a while to get things moving in terms of Prince’s vault, Carter’s chat with Variety suggests a wave – Tidal or otherwise – is on the horizon: “Prince recorded and rehearsed and performed constantly, and he taped everything, so once you think you’ve gotten close (to finding everything), you find new things. The vault was just one room and that room ran over into multiple rooms … we’re still in the process, and the fun part of my job is finding new things. Every week I’m getting a new call about something special.”
