Call for Papers: Theology and PRINCE

Check out "Call for Papers: Theology and Prince".

"Theology and Pop Culture is currently seeking contributions for a potential edited volume of essays on theology and the life, music, and films of Prince Rogers Nelson. Essays should be written for academics, but avoid jargon in order to be accessible for the layperson."

Please see all of the details here:

Can you cross-post academic presentations and papers like these? I thought it was forbidden sad

Yes, this sounds interesting. I doubt that my contention that Prince was essentially a “Dionysian” who lost his way would be particularly well received however (by anyone).

If I’d been lucky enough to meet Prince, I would have thrust a copy of William Blake’s “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” into his hands.

“HEAVEN AND HELL

Without contraries is no progres-
sion. Attraction and repulsion, rea-
son and energy, love and hate, are
necessary to human existence.

From these contraries spring what
the religious call Good and Evil.
Good is the passive that obeys reason;
Evil is the active springing from
Energy.

Good is heaven. Evil is hell.

-----

All Bibles or sacred codes have been
the cause of the following errors : —

1. That man has two real existing
principles, viz., a Body and a Soul.

2. That Energy, called Evil, is alone
from the Body ; and that Reason, called
Good, is alone from the Soul.

3. That God will torment man in
Eternity for following his Energies.

But the following contraries to
these are true : —

1 . Man has no Body distinct from his
Soul. For that called Body is a por-
tion of Soul discerned by the five senses,
the chief inlets of Soul in this age.

2 . Energy is the only life , and is from
the Body; and Reason is the bound
or outward circumference of Energy.

HEAVEN AND HELL

3. Energy is Eternal Delight.

Those who restrain desire, do so
because theirs is weak enough to be
restrained...”

Prince woke up in a new world each day. The only belief he seemed to hold on to consistently was that there was only one god and that men were, as a matter of natural law, born spiritual leaders and women aren’t (pro-tip: if someone claims to be a spiritual leader then they aren’t). Otherwise he changed his beliefs as often as he changed his clothes. Also, as the historic Buddha supposedly said: What happens when we die? No one has ever done it and came back to tell us. There is no way to know. Comparing and contrasting Prince’s theology is about as useful as comparing and constrasting the ideas a room full of children have on what color Santa’s eyes are. Merely defining his theology is a fool’s errand because Prince himself couldn’t as it changed constantly. How do you survive Mercury in retrograde? Stop believing in Astrology.

I wasn't aware it was forbidden. A friend suggested I do it, so I did. shrug
