If Emancipation was just one disc....

If Emancipationwas just one disc, what songs would you put on it.

ONE RULE: Keep the limit to no more than 13 songs. That's what the average album release has.

Here's my list:

  1. Jam of the Year
  2. Right Back Here In My Arms
  3. Somebody's Somebody
  4. In This Bed I Scream
  5. Curious Child
  6. Joint 2 Joint
  7. The Plan
  8. Slave
  9. Face Down
  10. Style
  11. My Computer
  12. One Of Us
  13. Emancipation
"So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

Okay, better question. What if Prince's melodies and lyrics were still the same but he worked with his older bands..on the best songs of that album (almost like mini-reunions) . The more delicate pop songs or rock orientated songs maybe would be best with the Revolution.

Here is my list.. from what I remember.

in this bed I scream (with revolution)

Dreaming about you (without the spoken part)--just PRince

the Love we Make (with just Prince)

Joint to Joint (with old NPG)

Friend, Lover, sister, mother, wife (with Revolution)

Facedown (with old NPG,minus poor Tony M.)

My Computer (just Prince)

Jam of the Year (old NPG)

Sleep Around (Lovesexy band)

Somebody's somebody (as is)

Right Back here in my arms (revolution)

Curious Child (just Prince)

Courting Time {Lovesexy band}

You wanna 'Pop' up Slave?

How about "If Purple Rain was just one SIDE?". That would make for a change...

BTW

I listened all the Emancipation cds yesterday and I said "thank you Prince".

Emancipation was a album I was unhappy with it the first days it was released and after, month by month, year by year, I understand the joy, the design, the liberation hidden inside the project.

Prince playing with music, drum machine, patterns for 3 hours and we are allowed to listen all those things.

To be honest: actually I *love* the crazy decision to build an unbalanced 3 cd opera instead a "hit" 1 cd Prince did in 1996.

The more the merrier.

Part of Prince's appeal was his ambitious projects. A grand, long-awaited emancipation of 13 songs doesn't sound like much of a celebration to me.

Despite all the posts and lists on this subject there is no definitive singular disc. It is all subjective.

it is worst than that! if it was one CD and they put out a Delux edition with the other 2 we would still be griping about it... like a wise man said... we would not be able to agree on a 4cd Emancipation!

I wish I had the list I came up with once w/ former Orger Helix. We whittled Emancipation down to either 1 or 2 full disks (remember there are 20 empty minutes on each disk for the sake of some 60-minute-per-disk schtick). We made some hard decisions but really ended up being a great set of the strongest songs. Ironically, the title track didn't make it.

Wow... "tastes" here are truly subjective...

If it were only One disc, I'd heavily favor DISC II. No doubt about it.... surprised people like many from DISC I to be honest. Disc II and the rock jams of III + Slave.

hahah.. funny how musical tastes go.

The worst thing being.... If Emancipation was just one disc, there would be only half so many topics on the org.

If Emancipation were a single 33rpm 12-inch vinyl disc, with the first side already taken up with We Gets Up, Sleep Around, and an extended version of I Am the DJ, what in the name of all that is holy could you put on the other side to save it from the trash heap of history? You must include some version of Emancipation or Slave (or maybe Slave 2 the System) in order to justify the album title.

My emancipation mix Name of the album New World

EDITED VERSION of my previous Emancipation album post. A couple of changes so this post is personally justified.

  1. "New World" – 3:43
  2. "One Kiss at a Time" – 4:41
  3. "Joint 2 Joint" – 7:52
  4. "Emale" – 3:38
  5. "Damned if I Do" – 5:21
  6. "My Computer" – 4:37
  7. "In This Bed I Scream" – 5:40
  8. "Dreamin' About U" – 3:52
  9. "Get Yo Groove On" – 6:31
  10. "Courtin time" 2.46 Added
  11. "Saviour" – 5:48
  12. "Curious Child" – 2:57
  13. "The Love We Make" 4.39 Added

Removed

  1. "let's have a baby 4.07
  2. "Emancipation" – 4:12

I haven't cheated and looked at everybody elses, so would be interested to know if I got close to anybodys.

Honourable mentions, face down, one of us, style, slave, soul sanctury and holy river but I will stand by my choices. Also a few outakes could have climbed on there too.

If it would have been one disc I probably wouldn't have liked it as much. I guess I'm just greedy. I would be disappointed if Prince would drop a CD that only had 12,13 or 14 tracks.
