I always interpreted his use of "eye" instead of "I", as an indication of internal truths, vs. ego. "I" implies the ego, the little self. It is that which we use to divide and differentiate ourself from everything else. "Eye" indicates a more internal view, an internal frame of mind...or simply a higher state of focus. (Such as the 3rd Eye).

EXCELLENT Benni.
Thank U lol

...or there is no meaning behind it at all. Much like there is no meaning in changing four to 4, or two to 2, or in to n, or example to xample.....

but if I had to guess a meaning, I would personally say its in relation to the 3rd eye, which Prince was into for the better part of his life.

U went 2 the ocean on that one. And that's as good an explanation as I've read.

is it what was sung in the Holy River? or was there another explanation ?

DOnt you read your Bible...?

its simple...

AN "EYE" for an " I "

Prince was just using every opportuintiy to PREACH.... razz

hE MOST CERTAINLY WAS...while reading my daily Bible reading today, I came across another one , of course he added his own words...Jesus tells us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER", I have read it several but it never hit me until today...smh...There are refeence to the Bible in several of his songs....

I've noticed that too. Who can forget the immortal words of MATTHEW 13:27-32

"And there, in the stables, a timid Joseph said to his 14 year old bride: 'Mary, I'm not saying this just to be nasty, I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth'. And so, 9 months later the 'virgin' Mary gave birth to a child in that very stable."

It melts the heart, it really does. It's the kind of love story that could bring a tear to a glass eye.

I always thought it did and saw the one eye in pics and stuff as a homage to the Third Eye. That single eye, open, seeing all.

I would argue that just because he didn't speak of it, doesn't mean it wasn't a part of his belief system from the beginning.

I always figured that eye for I was just another one of Prince’s Princely spelling idiosyncrasies, like 4/for, u/you, or 2/to.

It's exactly this and nothing else.

yeahthat

And also this....

Not everything Prince did was imbued with great mystical significance.

The Illuminati made him do it!
It’s in Dan Brown’s forthcoming Prince biography.
Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.

yes ... I think it was. Also, at the IndigO2 aftershows (21 Nights in London) the back wall facing the audience was adorned with a giant one of these:

Which is the same one that famously appeared on this 1982 single:

The Alan Parsons Project ‎– Eye In The Sky

Label:
Arista ‎– 204 666

Companies, etc.

But I digress...

Therein, my virgin, lies a deep truth.
