Happy Birthday Lovesexy.

It's one of my favourite albums and I listen to it regularly, the only song I'm not that fussed on is Dance On. I could listen to the title track on repeat and not get fed up hearing it.

It would be interesting to hear Luv Sexy which I believe some of the lyrics were taken from?

I love Lovesexy.

"New Power, New Power, give it to me",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, music

Has anybody heard Luv Sexy? Is it in circulation? I´d never even heard about it before reading that article.

yeah, that's getting a bit old. I think the resentment toward his JW beliefs is partly the reason. I think AOA is his last statement album in a way and I like it a lot. Some don't and I get why. Anyhow, at least this writer states the following...

Not that there weren't good things to come; a collection of the fine Prince tunes released post-1988 would still shame most other best-ofs.

Interesting but does include the now traditional narrative arc about Prince's career. Hopefully, as years go by, someone will be able to create a new narrative arc for journalists to use when they write about Prince.

Here is the "Lovesexy" album review published thirty years ago on June 16th, 1988. Although, it deserved 5 stars, they gave it 4 out of 5 stars... Check it out: https://www.rollingstone....y-19880616

As I recall, in the artists' poll that year, Lovesexy appeared at the top of several artists lists, including members of U2 and Guns N Roses.

I find those track by track descriptions of albums extremely useless. If I know the record, such an article teaches me nothing new. If I don't know it, such a description isn't gonna help me decide whether I want to. A good album review is more analytic than descriptive, it puts the record in context and reads between the lines to put it under a new light for those who know it, and create interest for those who don't. I usually enjoy reading Popmatters reviews because they do just that.

I wonder if, as we get further from his death, people will start to listen to AOA and ask questions about its themes and ideas. It is a beautifully crafted album, I think, and another of the albums from the post-88 era that stands up as a "classic" album.

Questlove is one of those folks who perpetuates that narrative about P doing downhill. He doesn't really like Lovesexy that much. I can't help but think that his association with the Revolution has kind of geared him that way. Ironically, the first album of Prince's to have absolutely no involvement from the Revolution or the pre-revolution folks is the first he said he was not particularly impressed with. He said he would take abotu 40 songs of his after 88. That seems pretty low to me consideirng how many songs he put out and how many songs this man worships from the 80's that aren't even top notch. A person who would place Apollonia 6 songs above the entirety of 3121 (not sure if he did that but just stating a what-if) seemed trapped in nostalgia IMO and more of a collector than a fan of his overall talent. I have read 4 or 5 different reviews for lovesexy this week and all have been positive; not sure what he is seeing that doesn't measure up.

it begs to question is he or anybody else really a fan of Prince at all? 40 songs out of 20+ years? really? it's weird to me. there's plenty of stuff post 89 that's way better than pre 89.

40 songs over 30 years in fact. I don't understand this man really. Prince could record himself farting in a demo during the Revolution days and this guy would eat it up like candy. I am no musician, but to me, what P did in Lovesexy is ten times more interesting than what he did in 'FOr YOu" Although I agree about how great "the Truth" is, I don't understand his mostly unattainable standards were PRince is concerned. Even folks who say his output was less consistently great are loving on Lovesexy in many of the reviews. Rolling Stone gave it 4 out of 5 stars. There is no accounting for taste but something seems narrative-driven and personal about his choices in terms of quality Prince music. Its like he is trying to go by what would be construed as relevant for its time. It doesn't feel like a coincidence that he would say this about Lovesexy when it kind of tanked financially, replaced an album that was considered cool and edgy (on a mostly superficial basis), and had no Revolution involvement (a group I suspect he spent mroe time with than with Prince himself.) I think he is a fan but there is something beyond musicality that is driving his choices it seems. Even the way he posted his opinion seemed almost contrarian rather than just straight forward (like he took pride in his pickiness where Prince was concerned.)

Questlove is also a bit inconsistent. He said the truth is a perfect album but in his reviews of PRince albums in that article a couple years ago, he gave it 4 out of 5. Isn't 5 perfect? 4 stars is only a 1/2 star above 3 1/2...a review he gave to many of Prince's non-classic period albums from Warner Brothers. By the way, he didn't review anything not from WB (I wonder why?)

Check out what DJ Rashida posted yesterday on Instagram:

"Today’s mood on Wax ✨Love Sexy ✨ 😊 I have a funny story about this record .. Prince was fond of my mother and would often ask if she could fly out for special shows, parties & even to join us on tour to hang. The first time she came to visit @officialpaisleypark he was giving her a tour of the front entrance area where all his plaques , platinum records etc were hanging . As we walked along the wall she was in awe like ‘oh look Chaka khan ,’ etc etc.. when she got to the Love Sexy plaque she let out a startled “OH” 😳. So two things , 1) my mother is a Jehovahs Witness as was P and 2 )she had never seen this Lp cover before as she wasn’t super familiar with his past works . P laughed his hearty laugh at her reaction 🤣 Without skipping a beat , and in a totally sincere tone he says to her, “ don’t worry , they airbrushed me naked . “ 🤣🤣🤣 That man cracked me up like nobodies business. He did some really touching things for my mom and I over the years & I will forever be grateful . We Love U for ever & ever & ever . #goat #mamascrates #paisleyparkisinmyheart #vinyllover #thankU 💜"

The more I read from Questlove the Prince fan, the less I like Questlove the musician. confused

I wish he would´ve said all this while Prince was alive.

.

By the way, that picture he posted was probably one of several pictures for the Lovesexy album cover, but it was not the only one.

There´s another picture that´s been posted several times here on the org, and that was supposedly much closer to being the "alternative" cover. This picture that I found online does not really do it any justice so those who want to have a look at it should rather use the search function and go through some of those old threads. The actual picture looked slightly different from this one with a little bit more pink in it.

I love the Lovesexy album and of course the brilliant cover art but I wonder if the alternate album cover would have led to more sales.
