Prince's communication style was to do stuff that most folks would consider weird and then not explain it in a way that made any sense. That's why people thought he was weird. I would say his communication style was awful.

Prince was one man, whose message on an entire range of issues/topics from A to Z was received by millions of people across the globe. I'd say he was an excellent communicator, among a slew of other things that he did effectively.

Prince hardly sang or spoke publicly about an A to Z range of issues. His lyrics covered nothing that any other songwriter covered and when he tried to write politically it sounded like a bunch of bumper sticker slogans strung together vaguely.

There are musicians/singers/whatever that have “reached” more people than Prince covering the same topics and usually in a manner that was far more lucid.

Prince wrote some great stuff that connected with a lot of people. Little of it was clear and even less was universally received.

Most songwriters aren't bob dylan, springsteen, Paul simon. the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Radiohead etc write vague off-beat lyrics too. Prince has some songs more lucid than others. His conversations with musicians in private settings are not within our grasp. We only now what he said in interviews, so maybe Q-tip knows something we don't know. Prince can jump all over the place in interviews but I think its more interesting when he was curious and wondering about stuff than when he was definitive about anything.
