I like your water analogy, but "Mountains" by its very nature CANNOT be considered a DEEP CUT.

It was the second single from Parade, and with a corresponding video! Singles can't be considered deep cuts.

From that 1-Second song challenge, I think the only "deep cut" was Under The Cherry Moon.

It’s not a deep cut. It’s a pretty simple love song.

Not deep in terms of content. Deep cuts are lesser known or obscure songs. That's what the phrase means. You have to dig deep to find or discover them.

The term 'deep cut' has nothing to do with the content of a song.
We've used this term for ages on song gems the general public never heard of like She's Always In my Hair or other B-sides, Alexa The Paris or Girl are perfect example of a deep cut. Or I'm Yours, The Ladder, Srange Releationship, Dance On, Sweet Baby, or even Bambi.

By the definition of a deep cut being obscure then surely ANYTHING not officially released (and therefore from the Vault and perhaps only heard on bootleg or possibly live) is the ultimate deep cut.

How about only counting officially released (but obscure/rare) tracks and whether they are a deep cut?

My vote goes for THE WAR (which is also musically deep too) biggrin

Exactly. Deep cuts are readily available (i.e., not unreleased) and despite that, still relatively unknown.

And it has absolutely nothing to do with their content.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I stand corrected. I have heard "deep cut" used to refer to depth of content, but obviously, that is not what the phrase means in this context.
