Record Store Day exclusives are usually available only in record stores on Record Store Day. After the day is over is when stores will allow internet orders for unsold stock.

Yup. My local indie let me put this on a wish list (to help them in ordering), but they make no bones about the fact that a wish is not an order. You still have to get your butt to the store - and early - to get your wish.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I agree. It's against the rules to pre-order.

However I'm a firm believer that rules need to be broken and challenged so on Friday I'll certainly be putting in a pre-order.

It's really odd that even to buy an over-priced re-issue, people still have to put rules and control in place.

If I owned a store I'd take as many pre-orders as I could.

Really ?

Why ? Like, bying a stereo or a sweater or car, and never use it ?

To keep it more valuable ?

Did you know that album covers remained in plastic get damaged ? All plastic wrappings shrink, check it. You must've seen that already.

I for one will never ever buy something that is still in plastic wrapping. As if it is still in mint condition. Bullshit. I can buy a plastic wrapper machine for let's say € 38 / $ 50, wrap up anything really, and lie to you about it never being used.

Sweetie, how about you do you and I do me. Mmmkay?

Honey Genesia, I can live with that in perfect purplre peace. smile

This would be fun to have as a collector/display thing, but I've always thought taking off DMSR and leaving a steaming pile of shit like Free on it was insane at best. It's like removing Partyman instead of Arm Of Orion. Egads!

You may not like the song, but it sure was Prince's biggest issue to sing about until his death.

For that, FREE as a song from 1981-82 becomes a very important song.

I never understood the change as well, but aparently it had something to do with the length of the track ?

I never disliked both, Free and Arms Of Orion.

I'm sure there will be a version of Arms Of Orion withOUT Sheena's vocals somewhere.

I think it's her voice that doesn't quite match Prince's (imho of course).

I don't have the original pressing, how does it stack up? To me the reissue sounds like they used the CD master, which is horrible (in fact all of the protege CDs sound awful).

I assume you're asking about What Time Is It? (RSD LP)?

It did indeed sound like the new CD Remaster (for the JAP re-releases) was used for the RSD Green Vinyl. Compared to the original pressing (which sounds fantastic) the RSD sounds awful, not picture disc awful, just loudness war awful. The green vinyl is still really cool, as a collectable, but, anyone wanting that good vinyl sound from The Time's second album really needs to seek out the original pressing.

I don't know why they use "remasters" for vintage vinyl re-releases. The mastering techniques used for the original were made for the vinyl format and are perfect. The purpose of remastering is to maximize the sound for digital formats, porting that over to vinyl is as dumb as porting over vinyl masters for CD (like they did in the 80s).

Anywho, it's why I have no interest in the Purple Rain Remaster vinyl and haven't yet picked up on 4Ever vinyl. I'll still buy stuff I don't have on the format (come on D&P and Black Album!!), but here's hoping they use the original masters or I'll still be needing the original pressings. Luckily I already have original pressings of the rest of his albums (the ones that got a vinyl release of course).

I don't know what their problem is. The 180gm releases from a few years ago sound great. I haven't heard any of the rest (non-180gm) of the re-releases but afaik people are happy with them.

[Edited 3/12/18 9:04am]

Yes, I was. Thanks for the write-up. Guess I've got to find an original pressing as it's easily my fav Time album. I agree on all this digital remaster nonsense... There's no point buying a record if it's using a digital master as it won't sound any different than the CD. That's why I'm very careful buying reissues and ensure that if they're remastered, they're remastered from the original tapes straight to vinyl. This is how the 2011 Prince remasters were done, hence why they sound so good. I wonder what happened to The Black Album reissue... I emailed my local record store to asked what happened and apparently it's been pulled. Warner/the estate need to get their shit together and give Prince's music the TLC it deserves.

Prince: 1958-infinity. Thank U for everything.

As some collector or display stuff, I could imagine far more better stuff then just the reprinted cover art - something like a picture disc for instance. added postcards (which Prince barely ever did with releases) or a well written eand nice booklet included

Picture discs are nice but I don't buy them to listen to. I picked up last year's picture disc 7" and it's sitting nicely in a frame above my Prince CD rack along with a couple 12" picture discs.

Of course some will complain, but "ungrateful"?

IMO, complaining about the choice for this release isn't ungrateful. It's an odd choice to release an "exclusive" that offers material that is already available on the vinyl format. Sure, this particular edition of 1999 is a bit rare, but the double LP isn't. Why not offer something most of us can't afford an original copy of, like the Sexy Dancer 12" for example.

Likewise, complaining about the audio quality of last year's What Time Is It? isn't ungrateful. The release was cool, the green vinyl was niiiice, but using the new "remaster" was a bad idea. It doesn't sound good. Comparisons to the original pressing aren't even close.

As for complaints about picture discs, well, some of us know that the odds are that they will sound bad and are only good for collectibles to display, but, some don't know that and are disappointed when they put them on the turntable.

And really, would this be the org if nobody complained about new releases? lol

It's not my intention to flame or fight with you, thedance, I value your opinions. In this case, I just respectfully disagree. wink

Prince wasn't Bowie and it wasn't Prince job to act like Bowie. If you want to listen to Bowie then listen to Bowie. It was never part of Prince's DNA to spend ages curating his back catalogue so Bartvanhemelen and some nostalgic gen-x'ers could buy the same album over and over again.

.

It's amazing how you lot continue to make up shit and then get upset about that.

Bart, first..you are an a$$. However, I have to ask, why don't you believe Prince cared little about this kind of thing. I know engineers who have said that when they mentioned technical matters (e.g. 24bit releases/recordings) his eyes would glaze over. He cared very little for this kind of thing. He looked forward, not backward and I think that putting too much effort into already released material was just not someting he cared about.

I wish he had but I don't expect we'll ever hear fantastic sound quality from his 80s work. I have more hope for this post 1998 material however.

In Canada we have a listing for a Prince RSD released under the title "Confidential".
Does anybody have any clues to what this could be? I am speculating that its a bootleg of some sort. The only thing that comes up in my research so far is a bootleg named L.A. Confidential.

Prince's knives always cut in both ways. Understandable.

Let's be honest.

He wanted control over his masters - got them - & it gave him lots of rightfully extra money.

That's just only how much he cared for his old stuff (imho).

Did he do anything else with it ? No.

Did he upgraded them to the sign of the times, the demand for remasters for instance? No.

The possibility to do something for 'them' (we) that supported him over decades because of that 'older' stuff ? No...

And, yes, he played them live. It were basically the only ones he kept on playing live, rearranging them constantly !!! And that over more than three decades. Very very ultra rarely new stuff was played live.

-

(the early 00's he played a lot of classic covers live... old school stuff he loved (Larry Graham influence? maybe..) but rarely ever new fresh recorded or unreleased new stuff.

Only in the very beginning with 3rdEyeGirl he played their news stuff only in smaler clubs. (But there were no album releases.) Then very quickly he expanded the very limited 3rdEyeGirl with old and newer NPG members. And you now what happened ?

Back they went, playing basically the old back catlog 80's stuff.

Same for his Piano & A Microphone tour - with a mix of rare 80's stuff even, and some mixed-in 90's and contemporary stuff)

-

He only cared for his past and back catalog as long as it gave him (enough) money to do what he (rightfully) wanted. He always prefered to look forward and do something new.

But we all know he 'lived' financially from his old hits.

Somehow constantly he must've hoped for some (financial) miracle to happen with new projects... Sort of like what 'kind of' happened with 'Musicology'. (But not on such a large scale as hoped for.)

-

I don't believe there will be +1998 back catalogue remasters (soon).

I'm pretty sure about that. Don't ask me why, I have no crystal ball to look into, but some simple sane $$-calculation makes things understandable and clear.

Only, and just if the $$ could be calculated in such a profitable way, then maybe, possibly, hopefully, a box release of his later stuff might be released for us 'older', 'richer', devoted fools called fans - who are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a remasterd post 90's box filled with stuff no one else in the music world of today cares for. wink

Prince sold just a small amout of his then released albums up til now (post 1997 stuff for example). No one else is waiting for that. Just too much work, too expensive to remaster, package etc...

Small possibility that it will be available as a download - and then still it is too expensive to make profit from it.

-

& Of course, now that he's dead, the only important thing to do is to feed the relatives mouths, and keep Paisley Park up and running (enough).

That's why a chance that we will hear 'better sound quality' from his 80's material is more real.

How ? In what form ? No idea.

New unreleased (better) stuff, or good remasters ?

Don't hope for it. His vault was left a mess. Which makes it all the more expensive to take care of.

For someone claiming to be such a perfectionist, he left such a terrible mess...

-

Oh, the actual PR remastered Paisley Park deluxe version we have was (as said) done under his 'supervision', meaning Prince had little interest. We all know the story with WB, money, etc... I'm sure that if he was still alive today, there wouldn't be any PR deluxe remastering whatsoever. It just wasn't him to do that. Strange altogether, for someone who constantly played (only) that stuff live...

I’m rarely on the Org these days because it’s just depressing. I was excited to see the headline of this post — a 1999 RSD exclusive holy crap!!! — but then my excitement just withered and died. What a lame release. PASS!

I’m excited about a Parade or 1999 deluxe release. Too bad they’ll probably be brickwalled to hell and back.

Bowie definitely took care of his back catalog infinitely better than Prince. I’m not a huge fan of the current reissue campaign overall because the Re:call discs set a low bar and barely pass it. And the new remasters are hit or miss. However, I did buy the latest vinyl box set because the 77-80 era covers my favorite Bowie albums. I complained loudly to Parlophone/Rhino about the “Heroes” glitch. And I got an excellent replacement disc. Anyway, Bowie knocked it out of the park with his Ryko reissues back in the early 90s. Bonus tracks galore. And a killer box set.

I never even bothered complaining about the “Erotic City” glitch on PR Deluxe. I had ZERO confidence that any glitches would be acknowledged and fixed.

It’s too bad to hear the green vinyl What Time Is It isn’t as good as the original pressing. A friend just gave that RSD version to me for my birthday. My turntable is at the repair shop right now, so I haven’t listened to that record yet.

I think Millitant is just getting on with his life and, based on his previous history, when he has something worth sharing he will share it.
I do not have any inside information or have heard any further rumours, but I suspect that if there is anything coming soon it will be announced around the time of the celebration, to be released around his birthday. But it’s just speculation, which is all we really have right now...
