You're right. it is a real mess. PR "Deluxe" hadn't been limited in its extension due to WB. My copy states: NPG Records under exclusive license to WB Records. As far as I'm informed, Prince himself had actually been involved in having put this release together. He might not have been entirely involved, but at least he must have had a clue on what had been in the vault.

I recently had the pleasure to talk to the „Vaultmeister“ of the Zappa Estate, who's actually using Iron Mountain as their temporary storage facility as well. Frank Zappa collected thousands of high quality multichannel-recordings of his concerts. Not all of them, but most of them, even those having been recorded in the digital age, need to be baked for them to be transfered to high resolution digital format or their contents will be lost forever. It will take many years for Prince's vault-tapes to be ready for release. Someone must at least catalogue them before anything could be done with them. The Zappas are doing it the way it's supposed to be done. But Frank had died in 1993. It's only now that they are putting out CD-boxes containing multiple discs from certain periods of his broad work. Same could happen to Prince's vault, I'm afraid.

I guess that WB would actually be happy to release any interesting vault-material by Prince, if the company had access to it. So far I haven't heard anthing about NPG having appointed someone trustworthy to get a clue of what's in there. The Zappa-Vaultmeister has been a passionate fan of Franks for ages….

Very interesting!

Thank you!

Given that Hot Topic sells 2 hoodies 1 for Purple Rain and one for Parade. Someone said that iTunes is selling the other albums at a discount but not Parade. One of the people who has connections said they were working on Prade and 1999 (I think?) for the deluxe treatment.

and given that it has one of his biggest hits on it.

it sure seems like Parade is what we could get next! I rather have 1999 or SotT...but I will take it!

What is still unbelievable to me is, given his studio chops extraordinaire,
no one ever filmed the man recording. I mean outside the very short excerpt of "Partyman" in the BBC Omnibus.

Maybe filming the "making of" of an album concept was something that came later on in the industry.
The making of "Pump" by Aerosmith is a fantastic example, you have almost everything in it,
incredible jams, artistic doubts, arguing with the A.R. man, isolated parts, great interviews.

What I wouldn't give to have at least one Prince album's sessions filmed.
I can't believe no one ever proposed him to do it, at least that we know of.
I guess hardcore fans would know by now, so the chances of such a document existing are very, very thin.

If you can't wait for WB to come up with a "Parade Deluxe",
let me remind you there's the fantastic 20 discs (and as much gigabytes!) digital box,
"A Year In The Life", which covers 1986 thoroughly.

It may not be easy to find nowadays,
I think it circulated shortly after the Web Sheriff years.

There's a very good alternative, which is the "Homemade Deluxe Edition".
FLAC'd vinyl, Baby!

Foefur's take on it, while always a tad over-compressed, is still a good way
to go after how it sounded when it was first released.

On an outtake disk, I'd like to hear the earlier takes of those first four songs that were recorded together as they appear on the album. But as "Little Girl Wendy's Parade", and maybe without Clare's strings throughout. It was pretty great that a one-man band not only sat down to record every instrument on a song, but that he was doing 4 songs in a row, almost as a medley. He recorded all the drums in one shot, then all the bass, then guitar parts, then keyboards, etc. It's just fascinating stuff.

I think things from earlier configurations of the album should be there, of course. "Others Here With Us" is a given, as is his version of "Mia Bocca" (which was in the movie). "Old Friends 4 Sale" (with the personal lyrics and Clare's strings) should segue into "All My Dreams", as it did originally. There are plenty others that would belong on it all. Hell, even his takes on the Family's songs would be pretty awesome. Those versions of "High Fashion" and "Mutiny" with the bass, "Nothing Compares 2 U", "The Screams of Passion", and "Desire" all with Prince's vocals? Fuck yes, please!

As far as a live disk, I'd rather have a DVD than audio. The birthday show at Cobo Hall would be fantastic. Isn't there a First Avenue show from 1986, too? But there are so many great soundboards out there of various tour dates, I have no doubt the estate has an even better copy somewhere that might just need minor brushing up. The MTV performance would be nice to tack on a DVD.

But also please just clean up Parade's sound a bit. Don't compress it and take out the dynamics like they did with Purple Rain. Treat it right, and make brighter the colors black and white.

Yeah, Parade is one of the few Prince records with near audiophile sound quality. Him and Susan Rodgers really peaked with their recording methods at that time. They really don't need to do a thing to the sound, but I expect it will be eq'd and brickwalled to death as is the fashion in the 21st century. My advice to all those thinking of getting the Parade box if it comes out is... still keep hold of your original copies.

They'll have to pry the vinyl from my cold, dead hands.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Of course I can only guess, but he probably felt that it would haven taken some of the mystery that surrounded him, if he would have been filmed while working in the studio. Besides that, it would have been a very long process to film the 'making of' of any given album, since he didn't record with a certain album-structure in mind, as far as we know. He recorded tracks constantly, but re-recorded them, edited them and overdubbed them, didn't he? I might be wrong on that, though.

I honestly don't know where I'd start if I had access to the vault and compile a CD of Parade outtakes, but after spending some time thinking the weight of the world has fallen on my shoulders, I'd treat the task with much more care than throwing in songs that belong to different projects like The Family or The Flesh, or a song that was later included in Crystal Ball as suggested by some people above (though arguably, the unreleased alternate mix of Sexual Suicide could be of interest but not necessarily a priority). What a deluxe reissue should not be is a messy Eye Records bootleg.

.

Clearly there is a certain level of arbitrary choices when it comes to compiling such a project because Prince's recording sessions were all over the place and it's really hard to decide what belongs on an album's bonus CD and what would be better elsewhere. We know Others Here With Us, Old Friends 4 Sale, All My Dreams and Velvet Kitty Cat were all included on early Parade configurations, and that the film version of A Honest Man was clearly associated with the project, so those are obvious choices. Early and full orchestrated versions of album tracks and b-sides, as well as incidental music from UTCM would make sense. The rest is really a hard curator's task, that consists in studying recording sessions dates, listening to the unreleased and uncirculating material to see what sounds like what, interview people who were around at the time and trying to figure out what would make the most cohesive collection. A song like Splash, for example, is pretty much in line with the Parade sound and spirit, and was recorded when the project was in progress. A song like Come Elektra Tuesday, on the other hand, would be a legitimate but not as obvious choice.

.

In any case, the result would have to be frustrating and unsatisfactory to some extent because certain things would have to be left out. But I beg you fellow orgers to think twice before throwing random tracklists like that: WB has already proven that they're incapable of doing a serious job with PR Deluxe, if they come here and see that they can just throw in any random tracks and fans won't see the difference, it certainly won't encourage them to produce a quality product.

Yeah, not only that, there's no way P would have selected the same song for 2 consecutive tracks, as frequently occurs on Purple Rain disc 3. Alas, Warners put the busy-ness in business. They don't listen to artists, nevermind the fans.

Boooo to 1999 being released before Parade

And I don't understand why people are poo-pooing Purple Rain Deluxe. Regardless of its issues, we still recieved a number of gems in better quality than previously available plus a few songs we didn't even know existed.

Even though I'm meh on 1999 being the next release, I'm sure Warner is going to suprise us with some good stuff.

From what I understand, Purple Rain and Parade are different from any other Prince album, because they are tied to WB movies and thus the rights are different (which isn't the case for Sign Of The Times or Graffiti Bridge).

As to a Parade Deluxe, I feel it should include at least good remastered versions of all official releases:

-Album

-B-Sides/12inch/7inch versions (for instance, the Kiss 7" has that great wahwah-guitar outro that isn't on the album or 12inch versions)

-Movie related songs, like An Honest Man, Junk Music, possibly even Mia Bocca

-Alternates of the album tracks. This would probably be unreleased mixes, without or with Clare Fischer addons

-Outtakes (I wish there will be a Others Here With Us with just vocals and Clare Fischer backing, it would be a beautiful thing..), focussed on tracks related to the Parade album

-Live concert(s), most likely Cobo, but I wish the last Revolution concert would be included. I'd prefer CD audio to video, although DVD would be nice as an add-on

-The movie in glorious multicolour as well as black and white

would make a nice multi-disc set with things for completists and other fans alike

We knew all those songs existed.

.

Problems with PR Deluxe:

- Awful sound glitches on 2 tracks. No apologies nor any compensation offered by WB to consumers.

- Absence of several single edits and audio versions of the music videos.

- Absence of the music videos on the DVD.

- At least some, if not all of the tracks featured on the outtakes CD come from cassettes, not the original vault tapes. This has been denied by some WB representatives but later acknowledged by at least one person involved in the process.

- Uneven sound quality on said outtakes because of eneven sources.

- Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden apparently a "fanmade" mashup made by WB from 2 separate cassettes, with the transition between both tracks apparently not faithful to the original transition

- The Dance Electric not in its final form (granted, it's nice to have a work in progress version, but should it have been the first version released?)

- Gross errors in titles and liner notes regarding the recording dates for some of the tracks.

- Amateurish claims by WB that 17 Days Extended could not be included because it does not exist while it does, in fact, exist.

- I can't tell about that because I'm not an audiophile/videophile, but there have been numerous complaints regarding the overall sound and picture quality on the DVD and CD's.

- Did I forget something?

.

I'll admit that it was still super cool to have the outtakes CD and an improved sounding version of the Syracuse show but nevertheless the list of problems with this release is simply too long. One or 2 problems would have been OK maybe, it didn't have to be perfect, but here let's be honest: it's a train wreck. If WB had stepped out and honestly addressed the issues, explained the difficulties they had faced for example when it came to sourcing the tracks, and the reason behind some of their choices, as well as apologized for at least the sound glitches and liner notes errors, it would haver been OK: at least we'd know they'll try and do better next time. But here I fail to see why we should be nice to them.

I'm really not sure where this comes from: that info appeared out of the blue a few months ago but it sound very much to me like something someone made-up that's been so often repeated that it's become "true".

Besides, PR, Parade and Batman are usually mentionned but not GB... except GB is also connected to a WB movie!

I think it's just a BS rumor, but I might be wrong.
