How good is 17 Days (Full Length Version)?

The package threads auto locked n I'm not done talking about this gem! That little bit of vocalization after it usually fades is cute, wish there was more. The extra choruses, music, Brenda's spiel lol, the official fade, this is a classic! Haven't stopped playing it since I (we n thanks 2 whomever wink) got it. Probably more than I've played the short version. This was a highly sought after track. Any more love 4 it? smile music

For all time I am with you, you are with me.

It's my favorite song and I'm glad to get this version in such quality.

So god damn good.

It puzzles me as to why they would leave this off of Purple Rain Deluxe.

17 Days has been a favorite of mine ever since I first heard it and the extended version adds to that love perfectly.

imo the weakest of his extended/full-lenght version songs of that period. Too much of the same 'let the rain come down'. Wise descision to release the shorter version.

I tend to agree. It’s great to have, and I wish it had been in PR deluxe, but I’m not sure it adds much to the edited version.

^^ No wettin myself, I haven't done that in years lurking lol. Just showin sum luv. Maybe not his best (this version or the short 1), but I quite like it smile. Repetitive, maybe, but that beat is intoxicating n can jam all night 2 it cool.

Why can't people wet themselves over this. If it makes them happy.

I didn’t wet myself over it but it did feel like a special moment to get past the usual fade out part for the first time.
Repetitive or not those extra couple of minutes are a joy to have.

there is not a lot to it... mostly it is just longer... AFAIK the only extra lyrics is Brenda saying something...

there is some different guitar and other instruments and some additional vocals... but mostly the same lyrics... but I had not really paid attention...

It was stated here at the time that Warner Bros. didn't have it because the master was sent back to Prince.

I would add that a funky jam following the original melancholic mood is not my cup of tea.
And Brenda's speech about the almighty power of the Vagina, or whatever it is,
I don't understand what it has to do with the original intent of the song.

It's like "Computer Blue", yep, it's fascinating to hear, that big, long, paranoid maelstrom,
but ultimately, the edited album version is a very wise decision.
Don't misunderstand me, it's great, I'm a fan of these full recordings, it's like pencil strokes not erased yet,
you get the sense of the exploration, the total immersion Prince went after with his ideas,
the will to squeeze every single drop out of a musical state of mind.
But at the same time, there's a strong risk of diluting it. It can make the real core of the song less potent.
It can be very interesting musically, but not as effective as a good under-4-minutes pop song.

Some others are like this. My original bootleg cassette of "Do Yourself a Favour"
cut right before Jamie Starr jumps in, so it was a big surprise to me when I first heard it.
It's a light-hearted song disguising something quite personal and deep for Prince (even if it's not an original song of his),
and then he defuses it all with Mowwis comedy.

But it was an integral part of Prince's recording process, which is really not that uncommon in the studio.
Most of what was released are edited versions of longer jams.
But you know how a Director's Cut can be boring.

There's jam and jam. You have longer versions that are the byproduct of the same pattern going on,
and the musicians trying stuff over it until the strong ideas emerge.
Then you have jams intented as such:
Mountains, La La La He He Hee, the whole of the 1999 album...

It's not a matter of length.
Personnaly I have to get the feeling the editing had an artistic purpose, that all that was kept serves the song.
"Girl" seems to lose itself into ether, but it goes back one last time on the original riff before it ends,
making the instrumental part worthwile.

While "We Can Fuck" is fascinating in all of its morphings,
I can understand Prince going for something more concise.
It's tempting to show all of your abilities within a single song.
But the song's original spirit may get lost in the process.

But this is rarely the case with Prince and extended versions:
most of the time, he amplifies and develops, goes deeper and makes it even grow further:
"Kiss", "Little Red Corvette", "Pop Life"...

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
