He chose him for his voice, he does have a good voice.

You just don't care for his voice, that is the difference.

Even Morris Day had to develope his stage presence over time and could not even dance.

Sheila E was constantly pointed at for having no sex appeal or to much like Prince and not herself on her shows.

Even Prince's earlier shows were considered not so spectacular

OldFriends4Sale, I always love your factual posts on Prince history (Prinstory?) and thought your posts were always spot on, but not on this one. Paul has no power to his voice, no charisma, it's weak, and singing a song like Mutiny, he just isn't up for the job to get it done convincingly.

Prince chose all his protegee singers, but how many of them were actually technically good singers or at least sounded like they could do the job required, and not sound like they were struggling?

Vanity? No

Appolonia? No

Jill Jones? No

Morris? Yes, by the end

St Paul? No

Sheila? No

Carmen Electra? No

Exactly, we need to stop cheerleading for all of the acts. Prince picked people on their looks and stage presence. Some grew into and her doing well today. Some are good session players like Paul.

Nothing more then a side man.

Regardless of the reason why he was chosen, I’ve never cared for Paul’s voice. In fact getting Prince’s vocals in those songs has been incredibly exciting for me - almost like having a new Prince album from the 80s.
I agree that The Screams of Passion sounds better with the strings arrangement, but I am not sure about the arrangements of some of other songs in the published album, Nothing Compares 2 U in particular (a song that I have fallen in love with again since BFTP 6). And then there’s Desire: The Family’s versión is beautiful, but Prince’s is spectacular, easily in my all-time top ten!

Agree with you totally about Nothing compares...and Desire. The latter is a very good Family song but a great Prince song. I actually really like The Family album, but Paul apparently being pressured to sound like Prince made it seem like Prince light, The great songs still made it worth listening to.

tbokris, princehistory vs if I prefer the Family(released) vs the (unrleased w/Prince on vocals) are two different things. And thank you for the compliment.

This thread is more about peoples tastes.

I still think Paul has a good voice, and did really well on these songs.

Vanity did not sound like she was struggling. I mean the songs were not 'ballads' or songs requiring strong singers.

Apollonia we already know was not a singer or trying to be

Jill Jones does have a good voice

Morris Day does have a good voice and did the song good

St Paul & Sheila E did the song good

.

-Carmen Electra(90s) is a whole other place

.

and Yes (Laurachardson I know you are reading this) and I know you already expressed that you think JJ cannot sing and is slut.

I don't think she is slut. She was an adult doing what she wanted to do and some of those things were questionable. Vanity was struggling her live stuff is awful. You go out voted most people do not care for Paul's voice and he was never succesful as a solo artist.

the 'vote' here has it about even

I've read some similar Family/Prince stuff too, and just as many love the Family version

There is a similar question on a Prince FB page about Nothing Compares 2 U: the Family Sinead OConner or Prince/Rosie

guess what it is about a 3 way tie

You just don't care for St Pauls voice, you can leave it at that.

Prince obviously has a better voice than Paul and Susannah. But The Family version has Clare Fischer. My ideal would be the Prince version with Fischers additions.

Prince's version also has drums. The Family version of Nothing Compares doesn't have any drums which is a huge part of the appeal of the song, especially apparent in the Sinead O' Connor version and now Prince's demo version. Then again Prince's demo does go a bit out of tune at the end - something is clashing with Eric's ending vamp, or maybe Eric is out.

Of course your posts are all about different, but similarly Prince-related topics, however I was with the impression that your posts were generally quite well researched because of all your factual posts, but your opinion on this matter could be better sharpened by objectively listening to the actual Family album and recognising if someone does or doesn't have a good grasp of their chosen craft.

.

Generally Prince made sure to not give demanding vocal parts or performaces from his protegee acts for a reason. Doing the 'song good' as you put it, is exactly my (and Prince's) point that to do these songs justice to a releasable level, didn't require depths of talent, but Prince was more concerned with the 'whole package' of the act. But even then, it doesn't take too much to listen and see the limits of their ability.

.

- Vanity struggled or sounded out of her depth at some point in every song she sang (even in Nasty Girl).

- Jill Jones on Mia Boca is better than Vanity or Apples, to be fair, but she's not a 'good singer'.

-Yes Sheila did the songs good, but she wasn't a singer either, she a was a drummer who Prince asked to sing, and did an entertaining job at it, when the songs were damn good enough to carry a 'passable' vocal.

.

Having a song that was damn good enough to carry mediocre vocals, is basically the thread that runs through all of Prince's acts, bar the Time.

.

In the case of Paul Peterson, the Family vocals are much more demanding (Nothing Comapres e.g.) that any of the tracks for Vanity/Appelonia 6, Time, Sheila etc, and that is precicely why he fails at being a 'good singer' or appropriate for the songs.

No, I like St Pauls voice, I like the Family album. Prince liked it too. I like sex in the outdoors, it isn't everyones cup of tea, but it is my taste. I love the way fried shrimp looks, but if I eat it I will throw up. But someone else can eat it and eat more with no problem. Some people love Deco colors, I love metallic colors. I like shaded spaces, other love bright spaces. I love the 1978-1989 period. It just moved me in a deeper way, it enhanced my life in that period. the 1990-1998 period did not speak to me culturally socially spiritually -so I found other who did. It is just a matter of how art move through us.

Some people need planned out thought out SEX with a bunch of things to try to enhance it, I love spontaneous, in the moment, no toys bells or whistles sweaty lusty SEX

.

I tend to hear music first(which is why I love instrumental music:ethnic, house, jazz) In music with vocals I hear how the vocals are sung second(don't even know what they are saying yet) finally I hear the lyrics. Some people hear it reversed, etc.
.
Liking St Pauls voice is not about research or factual information. It is about art and art is objective. My era threads, I never actually judged people vocals or such.

Some people love Pussy Control, Pussy Control for me is like someone scraping their nails on a chalk board. I love the look and vibe of the Dirty Mind era over the Diamonds & Pearls era. I love unpolished things, works in progress, things that leave some room for grace. Polished, tight, over produced things don't tend to move me. I love people flawed, I don't care for people who tend to be all together.

.

I love Vanity, I love the Time, I love Madhouse, I love Sheila E

This is about art:music

The vision Prince had for Vanity 6 ie (originally the Hookers) was to be a 'Wet Dream Fantasy'

If you had someone with a voice like Rosie Gaines singing Nasty Girls or Sex Shooter it would have been too much, they tend to rest on their vocal skills. I've seen/heard people who can sing and too many times their is nothing more than that they can sing, sometimes they overdo it.
.

I actually love listening to 1979 Prince shows vs 2007 shows because I love the raw, untapped, unpolished looseness

1) Don’t say ‘ethnic’ music as if it’s a genre. You might not be fully aware but that’s coming from a colonial bigoted world view, where music from many dozens of countries are lumped together as being somehow related to their shared ‘ethnicity’ and your western music is not seen in the same light.
.
2) It’s not music according to my appetite, I’m literally talking from a technical standpoint if Paul Peterson is technically a good competent singer and I would argue that he wasn’t for the reasons I’ve already stated.
.
3) Why are you turning this into an inappropriate discussion about your sexual fetishes. [Snip - luv4u]

It is not Gospel music. the song was inspired by a few people one being Prince's assistant that had to leave the camp to care for her father or something like that.

Rockband leads Gospel singers and House singers tend to sing very similar to me. 'unrestrained'

Gospel Music, is music inspired by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I've seen/heard people who can sing and too many times their is nothing more than that they can sing, sometimes they overdo it.
.

I actually love listening to 1979 Prince shows vs 2007 shows because I love the raw, untapped, unpolished looseness

.

Give Me 1980 Star Wars Empire Strikes Back to 2015 the Force Awakens any day

I get what you are saying, but it is your taste, and how your are hearing/taking in the music according to your 'appitite'.

1. I say ethnic all the time. Ethnic is what we all are, not just certain people. Race is a farce. It is not Natural. Ethnicity is tied to biology, culture, ancestral origins and all those wonderful things attached: soul expression, foods, dance, music, language, style, complexions colorings hair textures, facial features, clothing...

.

2. You are talking about technical, I was never talking technical. Do you know how to dance? If yes. Freestyle or did you have to go take a class?

.

3. sex is not inappropriate, I'm not a prude, it is how we all got here, people(org members even) are having sex right now, and going to the General Discussion forum to talk about it. Screams of Passion is about ...? and the answer is SEX.

.

There's a gentle autumn breeze that blows whenever we be lying

lying in my bed

The moon appears and disappears

U look @ me my clothes I quickly shed

2 be with every THRUST U make me beg 4 more

Back & Forth, the RAGING SEAS OF LUST, U want me madly

Is it Sunday or is it passion?

.

This is not church synogogue or mosque/nor is it City Hall tbokris oh eeek he talked about sexual expressions.... Um ho hum dum de de dum You are on a Prince site where the music and his expression was largely about SEX. Even when he sang about spirituality he intermingled it with SEX. He has a B-side from the Batman album called SEX, he has an outtake from 1987 called the SEX of it. The 1987 rel song IT is about SEX he made a song in 2011 called Cause & Effect and he talked about

SEXy Dancer

SEXuality
SEX Shooter

SEXual Suicide

SEX

SEXy MF

You are very tiresome OldFriends...

.

Nice try to backtrack. By your definition, if we are all ethnic then why would you say ethnic to describe something at all?

Please explain what you meant by describing a genre of music as 'ethnic', other than the outdated racist meaning of the word. Unless that actually is what you meant:

.

According to Universities Scotland’s Race Equality Toolkit:

Though apparently neutral at one level of definition, “ethnic” as a term does, in practice, in such phrases as “ethnic food,” “ethnic music,” or “ethnic clothes,” imply a condition of being non-normative, foreign, or quaint. It may also suggest a lack of sophistication or a tendency to the parochial in, for example, “ethnic literature.”

.

I suggest you read these and think about the actual real-world implications of using that word.

I did enjoy reading your factual posts about Prince history, but this debate started when I was surprised by opinions you were expressing. And even more surprised now you don't seem to comment on your use of questionable racist language

.

And yet instead of looking inward and maybe thinking 'hmm, maybe I was wrong to use such language' you tell me to 'keep it on topic' when you start discussing your sexual preferences when no one asked, and the topic was Paul Peterson.

.

Shame on you.

rolleyes lol

you are the arrogant one.
You replied to my post telling me 'You're WRONG' you did that.
I tried to tell you I understand where you are coming from and you continued to chastise me because I'm not thinking and talking the way you deemed fit.

Maybe there is a language barrier, or maybe something else, but let me try to iron this out for you one more time.
You are looking at singing from a TECHNICAL standpoint, I am looking at SINGING from a 'SOUL' standpoint.
From a physical standpoint, humans need to eat and sleep. That is technical. From a 'soul' standpoint, we do things to enhance the basic need with an 'experience'. I'm talking about ART.
From a physical standpoint we do not need ART, but from a SOUL standpoint we do need ART.
That is not technical. We eat vegetables, protein, fruit, fiber. We don't need to make nice table settings, arrange the food in an eye pleasing way, with 3 different folks 2 spoons and 2 knives. That has a technical/creative standpoint. But we can eat with our hands, we don't need a cutting knife butter knife general knife, we don't need a soup spoon, general spoon, etc we don't need cloth napkins, a wine glass and water glass -crushed glass each in shades of blue, flower arrangements and table runners. But when done and done right it enhances our senses, and moves us inside(soul)

.

This feeling's so good in every single way
I want it morning, noon and night of every day
And if by chance I can not have it - I can't say
But with it I know heaven's just a kiss away
Kiss away

.

SEX!! Some people have sex according to their bodies urge(or their partners urge) get in an get out. Some people do more to enhance the sexual experience.

Tonight we make love with only words
Girls first, girls first
OK so like first I'll start by telling U how
Intelligent a curve your behind has
And then I can tell U that I can just smell U
And race cars burn rubber in my pants
But I really dig trippin' on the thought of
Being caught by someone with your beauty, style and grace
Baby I don't care I would rip out my hair
4 just 2 nights with your face
I don't want to make love 2 U
I just want 2 look at U
I just want 2 listen 2 U

Oh, pretty little whip, U got me drippin'
Drippin' all over the floor, the floor
If I come back as a woman, I want a body like yours
A body like yours

Living rooms
I think... I think U would
I think U wanna play house
Yeah, I think U wanna play house

Lovesexy

U don't mind
I think U... uh...
I think U want me to (beep) inside of U
Yea...yeah... I...

U want (Lovesexy) me to s...suck around your living room
Ha Ha
Yeah, U...U want me to walk right down your halls

Mmm hmmm
Lovesexy

U want me to swivel in your love seat
Don't U baby?

.

In mathmatics do we say 1+1+1=3 or do we usually say 1+2=3 ?

When Prince saying 1+1+1=3 it was art.

.

When I say I prefer the Family's version and that I like St Pauls voice I come from how I appretiate the 'table setting', I appreciate seeing/hearing Prince's vision, the Family protege expression. I'm not listening to hear if the harmonies pitches tones and such are technically on point.

I've heard people who are tight and vocally on point sing, sweaping the ground with chords and harmonies that swirled in the rafters, and was not moved a bit. And then heard a 13yr old girl untrained shaking and a little cracking and it brought me to tears.

.

You judge this ART by mechanics, I judge this ART by soul.
Neither of us have to be wrong.

I'm glad that Prince reclaimed NC2U but i hate that the released live version has Rosie singing her first line what sounds like 6 feet away from the mic and gradually getting closer lmfao. It stands out so awfully lol.

The answers on this thread are so utterly predictable from some of you. Paulludvig and OF4S are like two talking pieces for their respective political parties coming on a debate show. You know exactly what their stances are before they open their mouths. And always in these discussions someone comes on to accuse those who prefer Prince's vocals of blind loyalty.

Comparing a rough demo to a finished product is actually a bit unfair in most cases.

I have not listened to the Family yet to be honest. I will eventually but the arguments between P and them have tainted the possible enjoyment of it for me right now. Bring on the attack OF4S.

That being said...I like the Bangles version of Manic Monday better than Prince's. I like P's version of NC2U better than Sinead's because I always thought Sinead's version sounded too serious, melodramatic and gloomy for the eccentric lyrics in the song. In other words, even though the song is sad, it has some light irony and hope in it in Prince's version Its bluesy and romantic in P's version unlike the excessive suffering of Les Miserables.. Sinead sounds like her mom just died.

Pristine Prince versions of these tracks would represent a new classic album for me, so no.

I'd love to hear this.

This is the first time I've logged onto the Org in nearly a year, and by sheer coincidence I'm watching the Family show from First Avenue in '86 and thinking how much of a damp rag St Paul is. And also how Susannah's not a bad lil dancer!

thank u 4 a funky time
