I have seen a few performances where Prince licks his hand. While I'd love to think he was sending a message with that , I'm wondering if he might have spread something on his hand that may have helped vocally with mouth or throat lubrication. Does anyone have any info on this at all?

If you watch that video ('Empty Room', Montreux 2009) in higher resolution, you can see that he is licking his thumb because it's cut and bleeding - bleeding quite a lot, actually. It would seem he did it on a large ring he was wearing on that hand prior to this segment.

I've watched that vid over and over because that's definitely one of them he does it in and even though I've heard the bleeding thing, there's nothing to be seen to my eyes. Have you got anything to show that better?


This isn't a one time thing, he's done it other times too.
