Prince's interest in Kendrick Lamar fascinates me

I was just reading up on this. Apparently, he and Lamar were discussing Prince being on his song "Complextion: A zulu love" but they got to talking and it just never materialized. Apparently, he had Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly" at the Estate and call him "pure" in an interview. Now, to some, it might seem like P was just trying to appeal to younger audiences or was flattered by Lamar's use of soul, jazz etc in that album. But P didn't always go out of his way to appeal to younger folks. I think its fascinating he picked a rapper who didn't mince words _(cursing etc) but who had strong opinions about racism etc.

Was this a good sign for Prince going in a more relaxed direction with his own work?? Or was he just trying to appeal to youth? Or Both? I found it encouraging and a sad reminder of what could have been in terms of Prince's future artistic directions.

good question. idk. i would hope both. he'd gotten to a point where he could literally do whatever he wanted. he's kinda been doing whatever he wanted his whole life and career but he could've put anything out he wanted to. never really cared about critics or what other people thought anyway. he had the means. he'd never be broke. he could do 1 concert and probably be fine lol

as far as cursing, content, etc. i'm not sure he warmed up that much. in early 2016, he told a DJ to cut off "Head" as it played at an afterparty lol

I didn't understand it at the time. I can't stand the sound of KL's voice. Must have been the content?

Maybe he didn't want to do gratuitous (SIC) cursing..but thought Lamar's cursing had a purpose...or something.
