My first thought was - are you serious?!? He knew he was gorgeous! That much swag = he knew he was hot. An opinion that must have been reinforced due to all the love he got from the ladies. They threw themselves at him. He owned mirrors. His eyes worked. My gawd he was beautiful! He could see it. Yet he did have an air of insecurity and/or vulnerability about him. Probably related to the height if anything. Hence the high heels. Men are real touchy about that. But in the end i think he knew he more than made up for it in every other beautiful detail of his physical self.

Find the GQ article (my link below) and scroll down to the photo that shows a very tiny guy with a guitar, in the studio. Even at that time, he was wearing the Cuban heels (as in the Whitman photos).
We also know he got ahild of a movie camera and filmed himself so he could find out what he really looked like.
Calculating
.
Husney says "he didn't look like" what he did later, with some acne and a poor guy's clothing.

But the heels.

We women know what they do: improve our stance (ie, our ass looks better).

Another thing they do is make us able to look other people in the eye. Even with 3-4" heels, the best P could achieve is 5'6"-5'7" but that would be an improvement.

Also in the GQ article, we learn about his size insecurity when talking to Warren Beatty and Bobby Shriver.

https://www.gq.com/story/prince-stories

In the end, I believe the bright colored-clothes, careful design (buttons up the legs to make him look taller), the heels -- all part of a "flashy" image that made him look larger-than-real-life...and it worked.

He knew he looked good.

when Prince died..I was talking to a couple of my female students. One girl (who was biracial but who admitted that she liked "chocolate"-colored men) said P was ugly. The other girl, who was African american, after seeing a picture of P from the Parade era, without being asked, stated how cute he was. Ironically I think had Prince gone without makeup (or far less eyeliner) more folks would have found him attractive. Makeup on a man doesn't appeal to everyone.

Prince was at his most beautiful in my opinion around the musicology era.

i always thought so and he got better with time, the Prince from his second album looked awful compared to the Prince of the Purple Rain era, maybe because of all the attention to makeup and hair. However, just like we are discussing in a thread on his guitar playing vs. Hendrix, it's subjective, he's not gonna be good looking to everyone. People have said to me they thought he was ugly. and there was an interesting story i told on here before about how i knew a guy who's girlfriend worked at the WB office here in seattle, a day after the lovesexy concert here, Prince went to the office on business, while he was in the office, he chatted the girl up and he asked "don't you like me?" now, this girl from the sounds of it, wasn't a fan, but it's odd that prince would ask her the same thing he asked cindy c in the song. the girl said he had a wierd smile on one side of his face and he was ugly, the smile on the side of his face would be familiar to us fans. Anyway, even here, people are divided, his own fans on whether he was an attractive "beautiful" being or an ugly, unconventional looking man who compensated with his talent.

Loved loved him when he wore little to no face makeup. I could handle a tiny bit
Of rock n roll eyeliner but I could not take the foundation. Nope didn’t like it.
The makeupless window was small but that is when he was most attractive to me
In a real way. I didn’t care for highly made up prince. When he was raggedy
During the dirty mind era, is when he was most atttractive to me. I like pre purple prince attractiveness.

he may have never looked better than his very first album, before the tweezed eyebrows, weight fluctuations, hair dos and makeup. Just a natural good looking kid. Truth is though, many times through the years I've seen some guy and thought, "gee, he's good looking, if he were a rock star people would rave about him" like sam phillips said one time about elvis "there are a lot of good looking guys" he then went on to say "and there are better singers" but that elvis communicated something to people like no one else, it was true. Charisma makes a star and Prince had oodles of it.

yes pete i agree his early press photos show a "handsome young man" truly with handsome

features and qualities. Prince chose to morph those qualities into something less rugged. why do you think he morphed himself into the more pretty vein. an onset of eighties glam? that foundation

I can't help but think that had Prince been entirely comfortable about his looks he wouldn't have worn so much makeup for so long..I mean he was wearing makeup in his 20's, 30's, and 40's..not just his 50's when wrinkles would have been more pronounced. HEll, maybe the makeup was like his armour.... He still looked good in makeup, but I can see why some people might assume that his 'good' looks came from his face being like a canvas. that being said, a lot of men look ridiculously bad in makeup and he most definitely did not...he has a Jared Leto kind of beauty. An the black eyeliner made him look almost persian so it kind of works.

This is a good looking dude...even though he looks a bit tired and has imperfections...did he need the pound of makeup he was wearing for the Steve Parke pictures that were being taken of him at the time??

I certainly prefer this look above to the one below in which he looks prettier than his (already pretty) wife and like a bearded lady...

why? well, the same reason a lot of black men feminized themselves, so that they would be more acceptable and less threatening, that's been the common thought.

someone, I forget who, pete townsend or one of the other brit legends had said that from their experience, artists who use a lot of glitz, makeup just use those things to hide, maybe that's what he was doing, the point was, with all his talent, he didn't need to hide anything. He addressed the subject in the question of you, directly to critics "shall i become naked, no image at all". I think he got close to that at different points and he'd come full circle back to the afro at the end.

Have you seen Morris Days son?? I like how the universe seems to balance out beauty. Two beautiful often have mediocre looking kids. But two average to under average people often will have knock out offspring. Not always but often enough.

In my opinion, I think Prince believed the image was "good looking" - the make up, the done up hair, etc., but as we all do, probably looked at himself without all the trappings and could find any number of things to point at and criticize.

One thing I look at is how controlling he was of his image. He had to have the last say on any pictures that were released. Photographers would use photoshop quite a bit to smooth out the rough edges, that we all show as we are aging. And it's a part of why Prince didn't want his pictures taken by fans, he couldn't control those images, couldn't prevent them from being published if he didn't like them, etc.

I do believe, however, that Prince believed his best feature was his eyes and he played them up all the time, even having them painted on the wall at PP at one time. (Don't know if they are still on the wall.)

Im glad somebody said something about the foundation. It was too pale, ashy looking. He really found his warm undertones toward the end of the 90s and I was relieved. For someone so prominent in Pop fashion he hurt my makeup fanatic soul.
