the Camille era[aborted] ~1987

Let's discuss this possibilities of this album. What would this have been like if released in 1987?

What would promotion have looked like? Singles, Bsides, direct a video of a song you think would have been released. Camille...who is Camille and how would Camille be presented to the world?

Yes I agree, about Good Love

I have notes I've collected on all these 'Camille' covers.
I will find them and add what I/we have concluded

I believe the one above is a fan made cover

but the 2nd one I believe is official. They words-fonts come from the album press Prince did of the configurations

Yes I agree about Good Love as a lead single. It's such a great song and I wish Prince would have included it on SOTT

REBIRTH OF THE FLESH

Ooh yeah, alright
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah

Kick drum pounds on the 2 and 4
All the party people get on the floor
We got the beat U're looking 4
The rebirth of the flesh is at your door (Let it in y'all!)

It's a brand new day
3 2 funk ain't in our way (No no no)
It ain't about the money, we just wanna play
The rebirth of the flesh is here 2day (Is here 2 stay)

La la la la la la, souli-a-colia (Hey)
The rebirth of the flesh, it's all over U

We are the fathers of a new boogie cool
Guaranteed 2 rock U cuz we're from the old school
We are here, where are U?
Everybody jam 2 the new boogie blues (Check it out!)

It's a brand new day (Wooo!)
3 2 funk ain't in our way (No)
It ain't about the money, we just wanna play
The rebirth of the flesh is here 2day - now everybody say

Souli-a-colia (Hey)
Souli-a-colia (Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)

Think about your man, the 1 that works so hard (Hey)
What's his is his, what's yours is yours
Unless U beat him at a game of cards (Hey)
This ain't cards, motherfucker!
This is life, this is real

We are here, where are U?
Everybody jam 2 the new boogie cool
Come on
We are here, where are U?
Everybody jam 2 the new boogie cool

La la la la la la, souli-a-colia (Hey)

I love his Camille sound! If I imagined a video, I immediately think of FREEDOM 90 by George Michael. Perhaps it would be full of ladies lip syncing the words, but not without Prince of course. For "Good Love", I picture Prince and some ladies trying on outfits on Rodeo Drive in Cali at the fancy shops like in Pretty Woman. But who knows! shrug

Respectfully disagree. I think the album would have sold well as this was P’s peak period. His star was still very much in ascendence. The trax work well as a cohesive project. Rebirth Of The Flesh remains unreleased & Good Love was lost on a crappy soundtrack. Having an aler ego never did David Bowie any harm!!! 💜

Who cares, is Prince he's always been perceived as weird. I imagine the Good Love video as animated with Prince and lots of girls singing, dancin and even flyin here and there, while girls joinin Prince in the chorus like the Nala and Simba scene when they are kids and go their way to explore, and then the musical scene begins, something like that.

I was reading about these tracks last night, and thinking: If the Camille thing had come out as an actual album (instead of The Black Album, which was almost released and then suddenly cancelled), then 'Housequake', 'If I Was Your Girlfriend', and 'Strange Relationship' are no longer on Sign O' The Times.

So, then, since Warners were already nervous about a double-album in spring '87, I doubt they'd have been supportive of a double-album just months after Camille. So, with only 14 songs remaining, would Sign O' The Times then have come out as a single album?

One of the greatest and most conherent album configurations. I love it!

It's interesting that around this period Prince was recording just sooo much!!

Sometimes I feel Prince album configurations can sound like random compilations, but this is great.

If this was released at the time, it would be very odd to think of those SOTT tracks not being on SOTT.

lol lol

Very strong album, very levelled quality with no standout songs or filler (besides rockhard)

You could have 8 singles from this album, but also just one - i dont think it would have been a big hit cause there isn't the standout lead song.

I'd love a vinyl reproduction, with the tracks properly sequenced!

I think if the Dream Factory -Prince & the Revolution still happened in 1987 the Camille album could easily have been released along with it. And we really get the 'alter ego' effect. The Dream Factory took on a more mature direction and Camille more playful.

I guess the concept of an "alter ego album" carried through and became The Black Album.

.

Very interesting period, and I'd love to know his thought process 86 - 89 !

YAHOO INTERNET LIFE * October 1997

Sites O' the Times

Artists have always been interested in
new technologies. DaVinci was.
Duchamp was. And the Artist is, too.

By Ben Greenman

YIL: Do you think "Shockadelica" is your best song? If not, why not?

The Artist: "Shockadelica" is about a witch. "The Holy River" is about redemption. I am no judge.

YIL: This may sound nuts, but does the Camille alter ego, which you used on Sign O' the Times, have anything to do with the famous nineteenth-century hermaphrodite Herculine Barbin, who was nicknamed Camille? If so, my younger brother will be very, very happy, since he has spent roughly a decade trying to convince me of this.

The Artist: Your brother is very wise.
