Yep, an absolutely awesome performance.
And if only he got to do Glastonbury. That too would have been the greatest performance at that festival.

Ah yes! I was on punishment because of my grades the night the AMAs were to broadcast, and my mother had forbidden me to watch it. At the last moment, my father talked my mother into letting me watch. I'll forever owe Pops for that!!! Rest in peace Pops, and rest in peace Prince.

They moved it from the "Prince Music Forum" to the "Non-Prince Music Forum".

Even though Purple Rain is a Prince song and that is him performing it on the American Music Awards. lol

That was beautiful, Latin, thanks for bringing back this great, great clip! I remember watching it on the telly and being in awe of him. I can't remember if this was before he won the Oscar for the soundtrack to Purple Rain. I love this passage from the article:

Yes, The Purple One released his universally acclaimed Purple Rain seven months prior, but on the night of the 12th annual American Music Awards, Prince Rogers Nelson snatched three awards and delivered the most iconic performance in the show’s 45-year history. His performance embodied every quality for which the 5-foot-2 fireball became known: stratospheric vocals, incendiary guitar solos, mesmerizing stage presence and the ability to make every member of the audience feel a part of something bigger than themselves.

Truer words have never been spoken!!!!

Never saw it live ('94 baby here) but thanks to the wonderful world of YouTube, I was able to watch.

It's such a transcendent performance.

Me, too! It was a glorious night. Prince had won 3 awards including Album of the Year and as soon as I saw the look on his face when he began singing, "I never meant to cause you any sorrow." I could just feel that something special and unforgettable was happening. I was right about that. touched

Poor Lionel Richie though. giggle I wonder if he and Prince ever became friends? hmmm

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Thanks Latin for posting this. Good memories and I too was so happy for Prince that night back in '85.

Thanks Latin...

I just watched this for about the 4th or 5th time...

cant tire of it..

Love this from the text..

Prince once said “Purple Rain” is about “the end of the world

and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god

guide you through the purple rain.”

On Jan. 28, 1985, Prince became the storm and the guide.

He rescued his audience from a night of mediocrity -- and

he redefined what an AMAs performance could be.

Love it when Prince says ‘Help me!’ during the Whoo hoo hoo hoos.
But also kinda sad as it’s moments like that, that remind you of what we’ve lost.
Such a special talent never to be replaced.
The Sampler Set is great!

Sheila was so awesome that night!! She looks a little nervous up to the point where the fur coat is placed on her shoulders, then she's all about 'Y'all just wait!'!
