Police Sirens in “It’s Gonna Be Lonely”

First of all, Merry Christmas to all my Purple Family who celebrate!

I’ve been driving a lot lately and listening to some early Prince. Has anyone noticed the very slight sounds of police sirens in the background near the end of “It’s Gonna Be Lonely”?

Any idea what that’s about?

It catches my attention while on the road, I can tell you that. It’s almost as though Prince is telling me to come back to the song and pay attention deeply to the music of my mind has wandered.

So I have wondered if those sounds were put in there to grab people’s attention.

The sound is so faint that it does make me wonder why he included them.

Y'all over think stuff, a lot. Why is there a baby sound at the end of "Delirious"? What does a sound of steam escaping have to do with going down on a woman in "Automatic"? Prince wasn't the first to use sirens in his music. The Jacksons did on a remix or two, as have a gazillion other artists around that time. It was just a thing.

It's there simply because it is. And I've never heard sirens in that song, to be honest.

There's a whole topic to be made on strange endings and "samples" (at the time they were tapes).

"Do Me Baby" comes to mind, what the fuck is that last "goong!" about?

My advice: don't drive listening to "All The Critics Love U In New York", "Bob George" or "Zannalee".

Let me rephrase - I do not hear sirens in the song.

Prince wasn't the simpleton you think he was. He had reasons for putting in the sounds he did. He made artistic choises.

That's because there...are...NO...sirens in the song. I've listened to that song while driving more times than I could ever count. Hell, I was even listening to it as and when I learned how to drive. And I grew up in Detroit. geek lol

I never said that, you did. And at that early stage, he wasn't thinking that far ahead. There are no sirens on the song.

You wanna know the artist choice behind the baby on "Delirious"? The song was too long, and he needed a quick ending. The street sounds on "Lady Cab Driver"? Because he's literally hailing a cab to set up the song. I suppose that's artistic on some level, but it's not some deeper meaning like the OP is trying to present. It's the same schlock as "Was 'Another Lonely Christmas' directed toward a man?" thread. They're both bollocks.

And to the OP - at what time point are these alleged sirens? Are they buried in the mix? Are they obvious? Is it that maybe you're mistaking a guitar part or a keyboard part as a siren on top of a police car?

His "Thank you" at the end of The Truth, I can't stand it.
What's with broken springs Darth Vader ruining an astoundingly too brief "Welcome 2 The Dawn"?

I can't stand the perfectly bland "I Love U" at the end of "Come".
He ruins Vanity moaning, for Pete's sake! And an almost perfect album ending.

And again: "Gooong!".
It's like, it reminds of the end of the "Girls and Boys" video.
OK, maybe not.
But still, it's like some cartoonish "Mariage equals doom".
"Gooong!".

But Prince has proven too many times he's such a genius with samples,
so let us not mock his first clunky experiments any further.
Myself I'll take it all, blurps, birds and dolphins, crickets chirping, water rushing, rivers of blood, churches belling, doves crying, girls coming, dogs barking.

Oh, and speaking about sirens.

I listened when this post first appeared. There are no sirens in it. Maybe someone was playing "Call the Law" in another room.

Time code it for us because after damn near 40 years of it abeing my absolute favorite Prince song and what could only be millions of listens, (hell I listeded to it 10 times back to back after I read this post) I must have missed the sirens.

Yes, it's probably the synths. Or the OP said he heard them while out driving so maybe it was actually a...police siren

THERE ARE NO SIRENS. It's a misguided idea, and a very misheard sound. end of story. I'm with Hatrina on this one, x10000

Again, I have to tell you that there are no sirens in the song. None, at all. And quite honestly, I'm curious to know where you live that has police sirens that can be mistaken for the sound of Prince playing any parts of "It's Gonna Be Lonely? lol
