Two heirs of the late rock superstar Prince are protesting the removal of master tapes of unreleased music and videos from his Paisley Park studio complex to California.

Sharon and Norrine Nelson, Prince's older half-sisters, tell The Associated Press they're prepared to take legal action to bring the music back to Minnesota.

The sisters say the executor of the estate, Comerica Bank & Trust, didn't tell them the music would be moved before it was shipped in early September.

Comerica said in a statement it moved the material to make it secure from fire or other loss, and that it discussed the process with the heirs beforehand. It says the recordings are safe at an Iron Mountain Entertainment Services storage facility in Los Angeles.

I do not for one minute believe they weren't told. But I am not sure we are getting the entire story about this. Even so, this doesn't cause me any alarm.

What's really funny is that I thought Sharon, Norrine, John et. al. were the ones who proposed Comerica to be the personal admin in the first place? If that's true then what the hell is the problem? They need to dump Londell. Like Prince did. Lol. lol

I read this from someone familiar with both PP and Iron Mountain:

Iron Mountain is a VERY secure facility with enormous amounts of attention spent on climate control, Halon fire systems, humidity regulation, etc. I don't recall this level of environmental effort being present at Paisley. If the goal is to preserve the master tape quality as long as possible, then Iron Mountain will be a better fit. They also house collections and artifacts that are vastly more delicate and rare than Prince analog masters.

Wow the estate is really in shambles and will be for some time... Look how dismal the PR DELUXE was and that was on a previous contract before his death, as was PRINCE4EVER... Wait till we get the actual official new releases since his death... It might be so uneven and dissapointing... neutral

The Estate may have been in shambles when Bremer was in charge but I think Comerica is doing a lot better and doing a good job.

You cant have it both ways. You want P's music to be released immediately and then when they do release music in a short period of time everyone bitches that it is poor quality. Patience Grasshopper. Patience.

“... a secure location where all of the original content could be securely stored and digitized as a safeguard against the destruction or loss of any original content...”

I'm not sure what to make of the drama with the family, but I've been waiting to hear that something was being done to digitize and preserve this material. Especially the oldest analog tapes.

However, strikes me as odd that it wasn't announced before? We're hearing about it weeks later, and only because certain family members are raising a ruckus. confuse It almost seems like the administrators were trying to keep this quiet for some reason.

Anyway, I hope this is good news for us all.

This seems like good news to me. My impression is that the conditions in the actual vault weren't exactly great for those tapes (especially the older ones), so anything that's going to keep them from deteriorating even faster is great.

It's safer to do it this way. Four large trucks full of millions of dollars worth of music would have been a target.
You don't publicize when you move things this valuable.
.
We knew an armored car pulled out of Paisley a year ago. They didn't broadcast in advance that they were moving almost a million dollars of gold bars.

The tapes were at PP for Prince.
There are facilities there to properly digitize and preserve.
.
The vault is underground and has been damp before.

Huh?

.
There has been water seepage into the vault in the past.
The equipment to preserve, restore and digitize this music is not at Paisley nor would it fit inside there.

Prolly to do with 'climate control' so documents, music, etc. will not disintergrate over time.

Not to mention sitting on multiple fault lines that traverse the state and region...with the possibility of the BIG earthquake hitting at any time, and Pacific tsunamis inundating most of the West Coast, from Washington down to Cali. I mean, surely, they could have retrofitted Paisley Park with climate-controlled storage facilities.

Well of course, from a security standpoint best not to announce it in advance. shhh The move still could have been announced sometime after the material was safely stowed, and before the family divulged the information weeks later. JMHO! wink

I don't know if this is true or not, but it is believable. Dampness, seepage or downright flooding seems to be a risk whenever you place something in a basement!

Of course, I have limited experience with basements...I grew up in SoCal and I can't remember ever visting a SoCal house that has a basement! The basement was one of the novelties of visiting my family in MN. lol
