A fantasy 'Deep Cuts' compilation

I've been thinking recently how it would be nice at some point to have a companion album for compilations such as 'The Very Best of Prince' that delve a bit deeper into the music. The current compilations don't hold much value for long-term fans but for people who are only just discovering Prince's music it could be a good thing to have a 'where-next?' type disc if a greatest hits comp has sparked their interest. I'm thinking along the lines of the Bob Marley model of having the 'Legend' comp that contained the hits and it's companion album 'Natural Mystic' that contained a selection of stand-out album tracks. What would you select for an album like this? When making my selection I've limited myself to the Warner years as anything beyond that seems to raise too many complications with legalities. And I've included some tracks that were singles but not hits.

She's Always in My Hair

Condition of the Heart

Mountains

Sometimes it Snows in April

Housequake

If I Was Your Girlfriend

Adore

Anna Stesia

Pink Cashmere

The Question of You

Joy In Repetition

Damn You

Bonus previously unreleased tracks so the fans will buy it:

All My Dreams

In A Large Room With No Light

This is the playlist I came up with Tidal and I love it:

1. I'm Yours

2. Private Joy

3. Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)

4. Condition of the Heart

5. Sometimes It Snows in April

6. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

7. Electric Chair [my favorite Prince deep cut]

8. Joy in Repetition

9. Still Would Stand All Time

10. And God Created Woman [my other favorite]

11. Dark

12. Solo

13. Shhh!

14. Zannalee

15. Welcome 2 the Dawn (acoustic)

16. Last December [these last two songs flow very well into each other]

A few things:

- I tried to overlook the Purple Rain era entirely since the deluxe edition gave us some deeper cuts.

- I also tried to overlook songs that weren't hits but gained traction through airplay and / or live airings (Sexy Dancer, She's Always in My Hair, Peach). In fact, I tried to overlook anything on Hits / B-Sides entirely.

- I don't think there's any really impressive deep cuts on the albums between For You and Controversy, which is why there's such a large gap between the first two tracks.

- TIDAL has Lovesexy as one piece; if it split them, I'd definitely bump one or two tracks to get Anna Stesia in there.

- There's some minimal label overlap with the last few tracks, but I tried my best to stick to the WB era.

Good call on And God Created Woman, can't believe I forgot about that one! I also would have gone for Electric Chair but Batman tracks never get included on comps because of legal issues and also Shhh but it's post-WB. I'd have them both in a perfect world though.

Things are looking bad when even our fantasy albums involve ripping off the fans.

Just the more obscure Prince songs from his body of work on Spotify. It was quietly pleasing to find.

Loads of stuff: Letitgo, pretzlbodylogic, Morning Papers, Moonbeam Levels, 5 Women, 4 The Tears in Your Eyes, The Future...loads.

Head on over to Spotify, search Prince and then scroll down to the bottom of his section. It's the third playlist.
