Hey Duane

Congratulations on realizing your labor of love. So happy to support it! In case it matters Regarding purchasing the book, would you prefer we get it direct through your referenced site or through Amazon because it is on a more national presence?

I'm excited to discuss this book. There's a lot more info on Vanity/Vanity 6 than I thought there would be, and so far from the author's tone and the accounts that are told, Vanity is given a little more appreciation in this book for her time with Prince than other books I've read.

Well, if it's true that Amazon hasn't received them yet, then the publisher or whoever isn't being very professional. Those books should have already been in Amazon's warehouses so they could start shipping them on the release day, which is today! Just sayin'.

Yeah, this is an inconvenience. I pre-ordered my copy over a month ago.

I think it's Amazon. I had the exact same issue with the Purple Rain reissue.

Vanity's part is definitely important to his story. I cover some of them meeting, etc. and a lot of details about the 1983 leg of the 1999 tour, information about songs she influenced/inspired, details about songs recorded for Vanity 6's second album, her leaving Prince, how the director and others in the cast/Vanity 6 group dealt with it, her reactions to the movie, and a quote from her writings about moving out of Minneapolis and saying goodbye to Prince.

Also, Albert Magnoli was great enough to explain the process of replacing her in the film.

I hope that her part in all of the music from this period is recognized and honored.

They've just started arriving from the publisher in the US (multiple photos have been posted in the book's fb group https://www.facebook.com/.../?fref=nf) and someone has just reported that their book has been shipped from Amazon UK, (but considering how Amazon has been with this so far, I'll believe it when I see it) so it won't be long now.

I'd suggest to anyone thinking about cancelling their Amazon order that they wait, especially if they got their order in earlier. The price was cheaper for the first 2-3 months of Amazon's pre-orders (don't ask me how they decide on their price! lol) but if you cancel an early order, there is no guarantee that they'll honor the same discount when you re-order. If you keep the early order intact, they'll honor that cheaper price from what I understand.

Thank you TheVaultKeeper for asking about this and I'm glad I can answer that with a resounding "Yes!"

Amazon would finally start getting stock in and shipping the book a few days after I cancel my order with them and order straight from the publisher (who for some reason hasn't been shipping anything).

i've read the whole book from start to end, every page, so here's a few things....

1) this book is not the vault part 2, or princevault the book. it's not an encyclopedia of prince in any way at all. it's full of facts, there's a lack of opinion in a good way, but rather than a nerd fact filled book of details, it's a book to read and enjoy like any regular book. if anything it fleshesh out the what the vault book has for the same period, but with facts, interviews and insight from people who were there, and any guesswork or estimates is clearly stated and not presented as fact

2) the book is not a bio. it's not even a bio of the relevant period. theres about 450 pages telling the story of what happened in that period. it's not 450 pages of reshash of what you've read umpteen times before, and it's not filled with waffle from the perspective of the writer. it just tells you what actually happened, using the words of people who were there at the time, and omitting stuff from people who weren't there and didn't know

3) the book, unlike most prince books is free of obvious factual errors. it's written by a fan who knows his stuff, and has fact checked, and got other knowledgable people to check, so unlike many other books you aren't reading and going "jeez, that's wrong". but at the same time it's factual and correct, it's very engrossing and readable. it's not a yellow pages of prince, it tells the story

i strongly suggest everyone buys it and reads it, and i hope duane follows on the book with another. his credentials are detailed in the book and very impressive. it's not an amateurish write by any means, and he's got some of the most knowledgable people to help with the book, from the people who were there and played on the records, to fans who know stuff more than prince does

in regards to this thread and the questions asked by some, as duane says, you really need to at least start to read the book before asking questions, as some of the questions asked will be obviously explained once you do, so it will become apparent in many cases duane won't be able to give details of some of the questions as he wasn't privvy to that information, but with some things he may be able to expand on what he's said in the book

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and you nailed it. I didn't want to write another biography or just a dry list of facts/dates. I wanted to write his story during that time but use what he was recording as the basis because his moods and his life can be found in his art. I wanted to let the people who were there tell the story and I felt like it was mostly my job to get the hell out of the way as much as possible.

I am looking forward to everyone's thoughts on it. I hope you find information and stories that you've never heard, and I hope that some of it sets the record straight. To me it was fun finding things as simple as the sound effects he used on his songs (including the 'throw the bum out' part of Pop Life). It is a big book and I hope that it does well enough to be able to do more. Thanks again!

btw, if anyone wants to order it through the publisher, go to my website DuaneTudahl.com and download the first chapter and preface for free. At the end of the pdf there is a coupon for 30% off from the publisher. I hope that helps you save a little money.

agreed, but those who ordered it early probably got a serious reduction in price. I wish I understood what is going on, but it seems to be that Thanksgiving is an insanely busy time for them, but that doesn't seem like a good excuse to me.
