Prince's admiration for the King

I wasn't too pleased when Graceland Holdings, LLC. took over the management of Paisley Park last year and even less so when I recently found out that an Elvis exhibition had been started next to Prince's at the London O2. I thought Prince would never have agreed for anything like this to happen.

But then I saw this article, and now I am not so sure anymore.

'Not shy about playing other people's songs in concert, Prince performed a short version of Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" on MTV Germany in 1993. In 2009, Prince chose to sing a jazzy version of Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" at the 43rd Montreux Jazz Festival. This unique performance of the song shows a Prince paying tribute to a King that inspired him to achieve greatness.'

Could Prince have possibly wished to be paired up with Elvis all along?

—It does not matter that the company manages Graceland the point is someone has to manage the park who has expertise. Even Prince would have had to find someone to manage the day to day operations.

prince had so many influences that it was easy to overlook a hick from tupelo, yes, he loved elvis like millions of us do. his manager in the eighties said after he died that "he wanted to be elvis" and someone said he could do the best elvis impression he'd ever heard when he sang to a few girls in the early 80's.

I think DELIRIOUS is a nod to Elvis - especially how he often sang some of the parts live

I also think that the Graceland/Paisley Park parallel is nice

Yes, I totally appreciate that.

My problem laid more with the fact that the managers' expertise had been based on another artist - and a very prominent one at that - therefore they was a risk of them doing a one-size-fits-all kind of job with Paisley (i.e. tranferring the very commercial Graceland managing style onto how PP would be run) as opposed to opting for a unique approach for Prince.

Added to that, my worries got reinforced when I saw that Prince didn't have the exclusivity of time and space at the exhibition as someone had made the strange decision to start the Elvis one simultaneously as if it trying to steal the show. Further to this, there have been reports about the exhibit revealing errors and omissions in the signs displayed, chronological inconsistencies and awkward placing of Elvis's quotes above Prince's merchandise (see http://prince.org/msg/7/4...?&pg=4).

So to sum up, my initial concerns were not so much about which company would be managing PP but rather how they would manage it.

In the OP, I am now questioning those concerns and considering the possibility that Prince himself might have planned this choice of Graceland Holdings LLC. managing PP.

A 'hick from Tupelo' that's a bit of an understatement isn't it? lol

All this is new to me as I had never even considered a possible Elvis influence before.. How I would have loved to hear his Elvis impression!

I think he probably enjoyed Elvis' fame, talent, and his songs, but like most black artists he probably eventually had mixed feelings about Elvis' reign as the "King" of rock n roll...(overshadowing innovators like chuck berry and LIttle Richard). Remember in Face Down, they keep saying "Dead like Elvis" (which reminds me of that Living Colour song.

Oh, by the way, Elvis is a" hick" from Tupelo. I have been to Tupelo and visited the house Elvis was born in. Smallest house I have ever seen. You walk in the front door, its the kitchen with a bathtub in the middle (with a board over the top) and there is literally one bedroom (no hall way) and there is no inside plumbing (outhouse in the back.). So they bathed in the bathroom with well water presumably and relieved themselves in the outhouse and they all slept together in one room. Very poor people.

Yes, and is it these very kind of thoughts (see boldened part) that I originally had in mind too (about him being overshadowed by the King of rock 'n roll at the O2 exhibition). Although him being placed next to the King can also be seen an achievement. They both came from modest backgrounds and rose to the top. Despite the innovative musical value of other artists, Prince and Elvis' level of popularity is undeniable and go far beyond their musical output. I think a big part of their achievement has a lot to do with their natural charisma. And to clarify, I do love Elvis! but I am also very protective of Prince lol.

I saw an Elvis biography (book) in one of the studios at Paisley Park.

He probably had a lot of respect for him. Then again, there are two less than flattering mentions of Elvis in the song Facedown and the video for Rock n Roll Is Alive.

ya, it is a problem for some fans, the ignominious end of the story. Bruce Springsteen wrote a song called Johnny Bye Bye which pretty much said the same thing as face down, no ignoring how bad it ended. I, personally, don't by the theory that artists, rockers, or whatever the fuck you want to call it have to die like that, i think it's stupid and wasteful and barring whether prince had a terminal illness it was stupid for him too. Most of us musicians kill ourselves for nothing, get treated like shit, ignored by the world, i'm talking talent too and we can't buy a break in this world. So I see it a bit different. And yes, many of us have the same "demons" issues or what have you that the big stars do yet we keep plodding along chasing after a pot of gold which we'll never get. I don't know what's dumber to tell you the truth.

I think these mentions are more about the lows that often follow the highs of fame.

the pic was taken down in several places on behalf of Prince himself..

I guess he did not like it at all.

of course the pic is not "real", of P + Elvis shaing hands.

However it's great, like they pay admiration towards each other..

At least I like it, smile

Only a little bit lol I knew he had met other artists when he was younger (Joni Mitchell and James Brown, through his father) so I was kind of thinking that a photo of him and Elvis was not totally implausible. I do like it actually, thank you for sending it!

'Could Prince have wished to be paired up with Elvis all along?'

No. Elvis never had a clue about who took over his estate. Either does Prince. The connection is about the money and the experience they have running tourist attractions.

Elaborate what? Is it better for you if I say Either did Prince? Or is this about another thread?

I visited Graceland pre and post the Holdings LLC takeover but it really doesn't have anything to do with your question. I do not think Prince wished to be paired up with Elvis all along - or vice versa, my opinion.

There is a big difference in saying 'Prince thought something' and 'I think Prince thought'. The latter is your opinion, the former, implies an evidence-based truth. All I'm saying.

I said Prince does not know who is running his estate, not what he thought. You're asking if we think Prince wished to be paired up with Elvis, and if somehow having their estates run by the same celebrity destination venue supports that - you have your opinion. I have mine.

Recommend everyone visit Memphis. Go to Graceland. Go to the Stax Museum. Go to Sun Studios, eat some amazing bbq and a meat and 3.

Never planned to visit Paisley Park but it's on my list after Prince said onstage he wanted us to come. That changed my mind.

This is not about my opinion since I don't have one yet and only discussing possibilities here.
