How in the hell did he have time to come up with all of those songs in such a short period of time? That is what I always wondered...2 nigs, le Grind, Bob George, Cindy C...they all sound like they took some time and effort to conjure up including background vocals, horns drums over artificial drumming...mastering...damn!!!

The music was created between Sept 1986 - March 1987 that is more time than he took for Lovesexy

Even though I think Rock Hard in a Funky Place stands out seperately as far as the sound and of course the Camille voices, it still feels like the album

What would a hot BLACK Album show sound like to U?

I'm not seeing a big stadium event for this album

more like Aftershow stops, First Avenue sized clubs

Oh okay thats more than enough time. I always assumed without looking for receipts this was done in about a month lol the way they describe the album was in making for Sheila E's B-Day party.

Now looking... it was only Le Grind, Bob George and 2 Nigs that were recorded for that party not the rest of the songs.

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I still would love to hear what the Birthday Album Music would have sounded like as a whole

rapper

I believe he canceled it because of Dead on It. I think he felt the lyrics would be misunderstood and seen as him disliking rap music.

I read that some guy found he had 5 sealed Black Albums in storage...

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/rare-vinyl-copies-of-princes-black-album-surface-w513965

cha ching!

but the story has errors in it... more than 3 1987 copies are known to exist and it was on vinyl... and it was on vinyl in 1994 and I am not sure Prince actually approved of it being sold.

also, I think Prince planned it to be pulled and bootlegged.

EDIT: I guess maybe the vinyls in 1994 were promo copies and not for retail sales...

I know regular folks who once they got a hold of Bob George, kept on playing that track.

Many, many years ago, in what seems to be a previous life now, I used to teach English at an evening school and made a large group of elderly ladies listen to Bob George and prepared a worksheet with questions. It was an ESL class and the average age of the participants was 70 or older, only one person was a bit younger.

Some of them enjoyed it. wink

I remember hearing the MTV news report that Prince had "Funk album with X-rated lyrics."

then the report that it had been shelved "indefinably"

I was bummed...it would be nearly a year before I heard it...

KoolEaze said "some". It's pretty obvious the rest had a stroke on the spot.
ESL probably stands for Euthanasia, Speedingly Lewd.
"Bob George" blasting in the nursing home. Ow Lawd.

darkroman

For me the black album has always been one of Prince's best. In simple terms it's bloomin' amazing.

This is the dark to Lovesexy's light and is a cohesive seque between SOTT and Lovesexy.

Oddly and in contradiction to what some write here, I have never found anything about it offensive. Neither back then and nor now. In fact even when it was 'released' I never knew anyone say anything about it being offensive and I never even read any press reports saying so.

Surely by 1987 everyone knew Prince was just being Prince and we were all desensitised to anything that could have been considered shocking.

The Black Album was the soundtrack of me leaving school.
It was the first and my last trimester.
I made a demo tape and left the country.

It´s actually a great song for writing assignments and conversation classes.

There´s a lot going on in the song and you can come up with a lot of questions....and answers.

And there are some great discussion topics in there.

To be honest, they found it much more difficult to listen to Marvin Gaye´s What´s Going due to the high falsetto.

But they liked Bob George and speculated on why the protagonist´s relationship had gone downhill, and how both could have prevented the breakup. And they discussed domestic violence and jealousy in relationships.

We had a lot of fun.

But it was difficult to explain the nuances of the term "motherfucker" and its proper use. lol

Basic tracking took place on 7 December 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (on the same day as the gospel-tinged Walkin' In Glory, which engineer Susan Rogers said may have been "to compensate" for Bob George, two days before 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton).

The track, along with 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton and Le Grind, were recorded for a birthday party Prince was hosting for Sheila E. on 11 December 1986. -PrinceVault

Although unreleased at the time, Prince played Bob George during every show on the Lovesexy Tour as the penultimate song of the first, darker, half of the show. At the end of the song, the character Prince played was shot, before Prince was 'redeemed', playing Anna Stesia to close the first half. -PrinceVault
