We have the segue between Musicology and Illusion, Coma (etc) and there's also something like this going on on the Carmen Electra album.
I don't like it when he did this. It was like he was trying to remind everybody, hey, I was famous back in the day! Look at all the songs I wrote!
And in the case of Stare, it just destroys the whole atmosphere. If I want to listen to Kiss, I'll just put on the maxi single. I don't need to hear it in a song that was made 30 years later.

The Carmen Electra segue consisted of contemporary material, so it was more bragging about being all over the place with all the songs he was giving others at the time. I found it pretty cool, particularly since certain songs were still unreleased at the time, so it was fun to, later, hear them and be like ha ha, that's that song!

Actually, it isn't.

Actually, it is, in terms of recording date. In terms of RELEASE date, then yes, but Crystal Ball was recorded before The Future, even though "The Future" uses the same Clare Fischer string bed as a sample.

Example: in the Crystal Ball liner notes it's specifically stated that "Acknowledge Me" contains a sample from "The Line".

Well, actually it's the other way around.

I'm not sure isolating a few tracks of violins from a full-scale arrangement qualifies as "sample", but OK.

I still don't know if the famous drone sound was a Fairlight stock sound or something else.
It sounds like a sample of a slowed down, looped sound of some kind, but God only knows what it is.

I'm talking about the sound found on the intro of "U Got The Look", and Madhouse "8"’s outro,
and it makes a few apperances here and there (Madhouse's second album).
These two alternating notes, I never understood what could be the original sound.

Speaking of which, is the "howl. howl howl." voice in the intro of Madhouse's "8" a Prince moaning?

Another example of Prince sampling himself (you could say that "sample" only applies to grab a small excerpt of a finished, released song), is the drone synth of "Love Thy Will Be Done", which made the cut in "One Of Us" and "Motherless Child".

I choose to interpret the topic as "Prince using a sampler to grab pieces of his own recordings".
It doesn't necessarily means said pieces have to come from fully mixed and final recordings.

He was never really good with straight out of the box samples, which explains why he didn't really get rap music.
First of all, you need a life spent with a shitload of records before an original idea comes to mind.
Ain't no way Prince would sit down, stand still and listen and listen and listen to other people's music, until a 3 seconds loop idea springs to mind.

It's not that he didn't get rap (A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy, not exactly bad musical choices),
but one thing for sure, it must have upset him seeing music basically made of collages of other artists' works
reach the top of the charts, especially after having made "Purple Rain" and its "live" ethos such a mainstream success.

Here's a damn hard-working man suddenly seeing his hard-earned cash register being stolen by... stealers.
Now the dust has settled, he's still right about it: try to sing, there won't be no one left.
What once was creative and political in Rap has turned into cynicism decades ago.
That's a personal disappointment: why oh why must every revolution end
with its leaders eventually turning into da bourgeoisie they were so keen to bring down?

I was only basing it on the order in which I heard the tracks. So for me, The Future came first! smile

I've watched Return of the Jedi before the first 2 Star Wars: should I tell people that the order of SW movies is ROTJ -> ANH -> ESB?

Please do not twist reality into "alternate facts".

I am not twisting anything, that was just the official order in which the tracks were released, hence how it came to me and the rest of the public. Prince's choice not mine!

OK, I see what you mean.

It's tricky because technically neither song samples the other in the traditional sense of the term: sampling a song usually means sampling a released track, while in that case Prince re-used an element from a song's multi-track in another song. In that sense, neither song samples the other: a track was first designed for one, then reused for another. But the original track was definitely designed for CB, then reused (sampled) in TF.

Thank you for the clarifications. It's fascinating how despite having been based on the same inital track the end results are still so different from each other.

I have to admit I'd probably never have spotted it had I not read it on the Org.

I literally brainwashed myself with 'The Future' when the Batman album came out (it's my favourite track on the album). So that's the first thing that stood out to me when I heard Crystal Ball the first time. It's a very logical link though when you think of it.

Sampling yourself is like wearing your own t-shirt: you dont do that unless you're Metallica.

I hate the songs he's sampling himself in, they degrade it to the ground and i wont listen to it more than once. 'My name is Prince' besides, i'm able to swallow that one as an exception.
