I think it's a shame to go to all those beautiful, exotic locations to film a movie, and then release it in black and white confused viewers weren't able to see all the vibrant colors and really experience those breathtaking locations

Yep, a very bad choice on Prince's part. I am confident that one day we will see this in all its colored glory.

I am 95% sure I read (somewhere) that UTCM was actually shot in color at the studio's insistence, then taken to black and white before release.

I do not know if the original color print still exists. I offer this only because I do not believe these clips are "colorized."

Me neither. The color shots in the press around 1986 confirms the colors, and so do the Mountain outtakes.
In this case, more praise to Michael Ballhaus, to manage colors as possibly grey at the last minute (that is, if Prince briefed it like so).
Or maybe the guy's so good that even in B&W the balances are preserved.

Anyway, 1986 what a year for Prince in photograpy.
From Jeff Katz, the woman directing the "Kiss" video, the beautifully shot Cobo Hall.

If they're colorized, again Kickstarter.
Let's finish it.
