Purple rain deluxe

I am sure this is an old topic by now but i just got to hear it. is there some other version of electric intercourse? Is that really the version? was anyone else underwhelmed by this release? And the remastered purple rain pans his solo in the title track and i don't like it as much as the more mono version that is already out there but maybe i am just hearing it wrong. seems like there could have been other songs on the unreleased cd. and i think a better dvd choice would have been the first avenue concert instead of syracuse. let's hope they put it out someday because that would have been more representative of how the album was concieved than the ALREADY RELEASED syracuse show. Okay, i want to hear comments. am a huge prince listener of all the bootlegs...really got into him around emancipation. saw him live on the jam of the year tour in milwaukee. peace

To be fair, the Syracuse show had been out of print for 25 years, never released on either dvd, blu-ray or digital format, so all we got were bootleg copies of various quality ripped from the LD or, worse, the VHS, making it nearly as unreleased as the heavily bootlegged First Avenue show. An official, cleaned-up, rerelease was necessary and IMHO a better first step before releasing anything else.

.

Apparently, the choice for songs on the outtakes CD depended on what WB already had in their own vault (some may even have been sourced from bootlegs for all we know), because at that stage WB didn't have access to the Paieley Park vault. So they did what they could with what they had.

.

Regarding the rest, however, consensus is that the release was a total disaster: terrible sound issues that could have been avoided on 2 tracks, outtakes sourced from dubious sources, the possibility that OD and RG were segued into each other by WB (making it a fanmade mix of sorts), single edits missing from the singles CD, errors in the liner notes that could easily haver been avoided, absence of the promo music videos and TV appearances... That's all on WB. Then there were also many objections by audiophiles about the PR remaster itself, which some say is just louder, but that one's on Prince.

Keep in mind that Warner Brothers released unreleased material from their vault, not the Paisley Park vault. I agree about the remaster of PR; it doesn't do anything for me either. Purple Rain Deluxe isn't perfect, but it has three previously-unreleased gems on it: "We Can F**k," "Wonderful Ass," and "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech Version)" version. It is nice to have the Syracuse film on DVD, although it should have been in better quality.

.

"We Can F**k" is a masterpiece of epic proportions---10+ minutes of sheer brilliance!. The sexually explicit nature of the song is the only reason of which I can think to explain why it remained unreleased until 2017.

.

"Computer Blue (HSV)" is magnificent, especially the extended guitar solo. And "Wonderful Ass" is outstanding.

.

I agree that PRD could have been better, but I'm glad to have it as a part of my Prince collection.

A little off topic - how is the quality of the Purple Rain 20th Anniversary Edition DVD? Did WB lighten up any of the real dark scenes, like P's parents fighting in his bedroom?
