A better question might be "did Prince Understand his legacy?" Or maybe "appreciate"

This is an interesting question. On the one hand, I don't think that a person can forsee all the ways in which his or her legacy impacts others. Having been a special education classroom teacher for 4 years, I know that I impacted my students, but I don't know exactly what my legacy is to each one of them. I don't know which words or actions that I said or did may stick with them 20+ years later. There was no way for him to know the contours and nuances of how he impacted the lives of millions of individuals because he didn't know all of us.

.

Having said that, I think that he absolutely understood and appreciated that he had an enormous impact. He knew what his overall legacy was: He was a brilliant musician who fought for the rights of artists, won 7 Grammys, and performed arguably the greatest Super Bowl halftime show in history, among other accomplishments.

.

He had to understand that he left an important legacy. After all, he was saving many of his possessions because he wanted Paisley Park to become a museum. When I watch clips of award shows (e.g. 2015 Grammys) at which he presented, and I see the entire crowd give him a standing ovation the second he steps on stage, and he blushes and says, "Thank you," I am assured that he knew he had earned a place among the pantheon of all-time musical greats. When I watch his performances from the RRHOF ceremony in 2004, and he's wearing the sharpest suit imaginable, with the fedora hat and chest hair poppin', he knew he left a monumental legacy. When he saw the smiles on the faces of the fans and heard everyone singing along with him at his shows, he knew that he was important.

.

He cared about his legacy, absolutely.
