Comerica is in it for the money.

They are not a music company or a company with a heart for music.

The music P made was intended for them fans.

This production stopped once he died.

So whatever is left (not any longer in but) from the vault should provide us with that material.

When looking at all them studio sessions, live shows, albums, outtakes, etc, etc we gather that there is an enormous amount of music waiting to be released.

From history we know that record companies and the like do not understand a market correctly.

Today we are the market.

We know Prince. We love Prince. We need Prince.

Do they understand that in 50 years time most of us will be dead or at least less interested in his music?

Do they understand that they should release most of his music now and in the next decade to reach the interested public?

Do they understand that monetization gets harder as time goes by?

That is why we need to know.

They just need to tell us what they are aiming for, e.g. new music in mid 2018, while explaining their progress in restoring and catalogueing tapes (`we have processed xx kilos of xx tonnes`)

Because if we sit back we will not hear most of that material, ever.

I honestly don't think that every musical piece Prince made was intended for the fans.
I'm sure he made a lot of songs specifically (Anna Waiting for example) for some people that were for them privately and not for the public consumption. I would be great to hear those songs but I believe a lot of stuff in the vault was for private use only.

Does an unheard song even exist?

AKA: does a falling tree in a big wood make a sound when no one gets to hear it fall?

You think what you want.

Still it would be a waste.

With all the brouha surrounding the estate I am quite sure that ethical-minded individuals will be present in multitudes when discussing what will be released.

Prince created something and therefor he heard it so the question isn't relevant and philosophically not sound in this context.

A waste only to you: the fan.

Prince created it, heard it and then shelved it and that was it, for him it served it purpose. Maybe there's stuff in there he considered to be it training sessions of recording a new skill or a try out for reference, or an idea to use in a future song or a mind note or whatever. Some things just aren't for everyone to hear.

Work in progress is not for the public?

It shows the mastery, the talent, the irrational decisions, the coincidence...

What are talking about. Engineers who worked for him have said that he would go into the vault and take pieces of music to work on new compostions all the time. He was not being irrational the stuff in the vault appears to be stuff he was continuing to work on and use or stuff that did not make it on the albums and he could not get other artist to record.

Lot's of musicians have vaults and so do record companies.

I think The Vault is a mixed bag: some unfinished pieces and others just waiting for the right time for release. Prince said publicly that he sometimes placed the best take of some of his already released songs in The Vault. He also said, I believe on The View, that one day someone would release the contents of The Vault. Personally, I think he would relish the thought of his music being released and studied for years to come.

Of course he would. His sister said he wanted to be known as the most prolific artist and that is going to happen. It is not a coincedence he wanted someone to do something with that music when he was gone and knowing how greedy the music industry is. He knew it would get out one way or another.

Agree. If anyone who's a musician has its saying in this big ol' mess, maybe it'll happen.

It's 2017, for Chrissake: we have Web Audio API, they have multi-track recordings,
let's have some 16 tracks reductions, where you can mute/solo any chosen track.
I'll piss my pants right on the spot and gladly give my mule and my forty acres, tacitly renewed for life.

They could test the idea in PP Studio A's control room.
Shit, what's the point of staring at a dead mixing console?

Maybe because he didn't plan on dying yet. Maybe he wanted to do something about a will in 2018 or something, I don't know, I have never been able to look inside his mind.
I honestly don't care about his stuff being released or not, I'll buy it anyhow, but you saying that all teh music he recorded is for the fans is just not true and should be considered.
I think you would even demand a recording of a melodic fart he took that inspired Slow Love or something if that was in his vault.

He left some of his tapes in studios around the world, for example in The Netherlands and in Australia, these tapes were spread amongst some archivers and fans and some of it has been bootlegged...
The fucked up thing is is that Prince didn't have copies of some of this stuff because these tapes were "misplaced", so they aren't in his vaults but in the hands of anonymous unknowns and it's highly unlikely that these will ever be released officially...

Neversin.

....Misplaced tapes with Full unreleased album unknown by classic fans would be interresting to know!

Anyway Neversin....thanx 4 ur information about this anecdoct !

I totally agree. He had SO much music in him and simply had to record it, whether it was day or night. A very rare musical genius that comes along once in a lifetime....

So should all art students be considered vultures and tomb raiders?
I agree, some greedy horns are showing — there's a "Collect'em all®" mentality going on, no doubt,
but I don't think a passion for sketches and the creative process behind an artist's work makes one a vulture.

There is a Prince handwritten note out there that may suggest that the only thing that really bugged him
about bootlegs is not to see any money, rightfully so.
28f29842dc4dcd811f5aac296ed5bf07--prince-lyrics-prince-rogers-nelson.jpg

Look at the liner notes from "Chaos and Disorder".
The songs apparently were not so for private use to the point of not releasing them.

The only real example of a song being so personal to the point he did not want anyone to hear it is "Wally".
The rest, he asked for it to be stored in the Vault. Not for privacy purposes: even he knew you cannot flood the market with records,
but he could not help recording on a daily basis either.
"Eventually someone wil release it" is pretty clear.
Otherwise he would have give a lawyer clear instructions as soon as 1986.

I’m more or less OK with the content of the Vault to be moved to Iron Mountain. I understand the sentiment that his Vault is not in Paisley Park anymore and the concern if this is done for the right reasons and not only for the money and if the right people are in charge right now. I have the same concern. Right now I think the priority is to have his music preserved and in this way protect his legacy for our and next generations. Not wait for years to take action. Paisley Park I think may not be the ideal place to preserve his recorded Vault music. The main purpose of Paisley Park, was to record and to play music. Because Prince left no will, it is now up to other people to decide on the next steps. I’m not sure if he really cared about what would happen with the Vault when he was dead. He mostly lived in the now and would know the consequences, because he was a smart man. I think the main purpose for Prince was that he could use the music if it would fit for future projects. Maybe he kept some of the content for sentimental reasons as well. A friend of mine keeps and archives everything, it gives him some kind of certainty and control. Hopefully it will not take years before finally some music from the Vault will be released. I think it already takes a long time.

Prince recorded his thoughts, which became recorded memories...
He stashed that in his vault and he could grab it for use whenever he felt like, to use for his own...
For instance, if he improvised a song specifically for a certain someone, say for example for that persons birthday or whatever, and he had someone record it so he could put it away in his vault for reference, or to use at a later date, then that shit is not for you to hear...
Prince also recorded private things like anyone else that isn't for strangers to see or hear...
Accept that...

It's been said a million times, but just for the heck of it I'll say it this time: wills can be and are contested all the time. A will is no guarantee of anything, especially when speaking of famous people/celebrities. Really.

I am happy he left things the way they are because it's what he wanted to do. He protected what HE thought should be protected. The rest is up to the legal system.

i agree with that^^^. i imagine choreographers taping improvised movements or rehearsals so that

when they are ready to create a dance they have a bank of movements to put together in a way that

moves. those improvisations aren't complete dances they are movement doodlings. i suppose they are of interest and could be interesting to see but they should not be considered to belong to public and we should not assume the right to hear or see this art just based on the fact that the artist created it. my feelings.
