AnnaSantana said: Rotting away for years..... sounds to me like the owner of the music Wasn't concerned about it being released.

I think Prince once said that he treated his unreleased music as demos that he could cherry pick from and expand on to create other new songs.
He also said that he didn't release some songs because they were too good to release at that moment in time.

Yes, he did say this but some people on this board have it in their thick skull that all of the tapes were rotting and molded. When their is not proof of this at all. I am sure Comerica spent money having the tapes hauled away that were moldy and rotted.

Not sure how a non living thing can rot but that is the wording that people are choosing to use.

I think you need to brush up on your reading skills... Nobody said ALL the contents or tapes were molded... The water damage caused molding on the walls and floor in the vault, nobody said anything about mold on the tapes, there were tapes in his vault that were just laying around there without any proper casing that were gumming up and had a shitload of dust on it, and sure he had racks with tapes stored in casings, but without proper cooling or ventilation shit like mold can cause a lot of damage... Way to go blowing statements out of proportion...

Neversin.

The word the mold should not have been used at all but it is a rumor with no name attached to it. Mold can be cleaned and takes can be picked off the floor and placed in the proper place or gotten rid of if needed. You got fan spouting off about rumors from 29 years ago. If he hired Dave Hampton to clean things up about 19 years ago what would make anyone think the vault was not in better shape? At the end of the day it was intellectual property to do as he pleased or do nothing with it.

Sure.

But exactly the proper care and attention part gets lirtle mention.

Who is catalogueing? Restoring? Digitizing? What is the progress? Cost? Planning? Estimated time of completion?

I'm not expecting to hear about any of this part of the process because it has no bearing on us really. We don't know much but don't need to know much either. And given how a lot of the fan base seems to lose their shit over every little thing, it's probably for the best that this isn't put out there. You know everyone is gonna have an opinion on how this should be handled start to finish lol

All of those details are far beyond the scope of fans’ concern, so why question a process none of us will ever get concrete answers to without any privileged access?

You're sure?

If it has been shown that they cannot do a decent remaster of existing, released material, why expect them to bring us the right materials within a reasonable time?

Any restauration progress is of interest to fans as it has a direct relation with possible release of these audios.

The unreleased stuff is of interest for inclusion on remasters as well as for standalone vault releases.

Hiding any progress is only in the interest of them insiders that milk the estate but do not understand that they will be too slow in releasing the music.

[Flame snip - luv4u] ... Mold inside the main vault was seen with my own fucking eyes 15 years ago and I will not name sources unless the people, who aren't on here and work(ed) there, come in here and lay it down themselves...
You make it seem like that just because no fucking press conferences, tailor made for you or fans, were held concerning these kind of issues that isn't of your concern, it didn't happen or isn't true... What the fuck kind of logic is that?!
Just because you didn't read/hear/see it in some podcast or media outlet doesn't mean people who know different shouldn't say shit, I hope you see the paradox and irony of that...

Wanna hear somethig really fucked up?
He left some of his tapes in studios around the world, for example in The Netherlands and in Australia, these tapes were spread amongst some archivers and fans and some of it has been bootlegged...
The fucked up thing is is that Prince didn't have copies of some of this stuff because these tapes were "misplaced", so they aren't in his vaults but in the hands of anonymous unknowns and it's highly unlikely that these will ever be released officially...

. It's safer to do it this way. Four large trucks full of millions of dollars worth of music would have been a target. You don't publicize when you move things this valuable. . We knew an armored car pulled out of Paisley a year ago. They didn't broadcast in advance that they were moving almost a million dollars of gold bars. .

Hey laytonian, just a question: Was the "four trucks" comment just a rhetorical gesture, or were there actually four trucks full of recordings?

The reason I'm asking is that several posters in this thread have taken as literal truth that there were four trucks worth of material, but I can't track that down to any source besides your comment.

(Edit: I haven't listened to the podcasts yet, so maybe that info came from one of those interviews.)

If Prince was still with us, he would be facing this task. Whether he would have done anything about it ... probably not, unless someone (a wife?) got ahold of him and convinced him to do it. Without him, it is the smartest thing to do. Get it organized and ready to go.

Comerica is in it for the money.

They are not a music company or a company with a heart for music.

The music P made was intended for them fans.

This production stopped once he died.

So whatever is left (not any longer in but) from the vault should provide us with that material.

When looking at all them studio sessions, live shows, albums, outtakes, etc, etc we gather that there is an enormous amount of music waiting to be released.

From history we know that record companies and the like do not understand a market correctly.

Today we are the market.

We know Prince. We love Prince. We need Prince.

Do they understand that in 50 years time most of us will be dead or at least less interested in his music?

Do they understand that they should release most of his music now and in the next decade to reach the interested public?

Do they understand that monetization gets harder as time goes by?

That is why we need to know.

They just need to tell us what they are aiming for, e.g. new music in mid 2018, while explaining their progress in restoring and catalogueing tapes (`we have processed xx kilos of xx tonnes`)

Because if we sit back we will not hear most of that material, ever.

Comerica was brought in to manage an estate. The Estate is about more than what’s in the vault. Also for a good part of Prince’s career he avoided working for music companies. If all the vault stuff was in the hands of a music company right now I’m sure fans would be just as skeptical and suspicious of motives. They certainly were when the Universal deal happened.

Lik4 I said the other day I trust Dave Hampton. He knows Iron Mountain (may have even worked with them) and said it’s a good move.

What are you talking about here? You do realize there is court documentation on what has to be done by Comerica in regard to dealings with the heirs? Comerica can't just wing it and do whatever they feel like doing. And even though the heirs have been declared, they aren't in charge of anything until the court passes the estate along to them, and that doesn't appear to be happening for a looonnng time yet. If they had an issue, it wouldn't surprise me to hear they've already spoken with the Judge and it changed nothing as to what Comerica wanted to do. Why bring this to a public venue? Fan outrage? What for? The fans want this music to be released but if this stuff isn't handled properly, no one will get to hear anything from the vault.

The info is right there in the innertubes:

.

Essentially, the process is this... put the tape in an electric oven with an accurate temperature control set to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, for about 4 - 6 hours. DO NOT USE a gas oven... gas produces water vapor when it burns, and that is what you are trying to drive out of the tape. Ensure the temperature is accurate with a lab quality thermometer or use a "known to be accurate" oven. A slight variation (plus or minus 5 - 10 degrees Fahrenheit) above and below this temperature is acceptable.

NEVER ATTEMPT TO BAKE TAPE WITHOUT AN ACCURATE THERMOMETER!

Place the tape on the reels in the oven and bring the oven slowly up to temperature. Allow it to cool back to room temperature before removing the tape.

Just seems like sometimes the vibe on here is that fans really could care less about Prince as a person, a human being; all they want is music, more and more music. Like he gave his f*(#ing all to the music, even onto death and people just want more and more and more. Not because they appreciate him and his creativity, but just to feed their endless appetite.

I agree, Endless appetite. [Edited 10/12/17 22:04pm]

Prince, the person, is dead. He was a shitty businessman in life & much the same in death.

More to the point, to a lot of us fans, he wasn't exactly the best person. In fact, he could be an outright asshole. I'm actually a fan he threatened with a lawsuit several years ago. All I'm here for is his music. Not to fawn over him. So, frankly, I couldn't give a damn what you think about my appetite.
