Dave Hampton talks about the masters being moved to Iron Mountain. He explains why it’s a good move. If anyone would be an authority on this it’s Dave. Perhaps Sharon should have reached out to him before she got fans all upset.

I just read all about Iron Mountain Entertainment Services on their website, and I couldn't be happier. Let's face it, the tapes are in much better hands now for restoration, preservation, and digitalization than they ever were in Prince's hands. Finally, his legacy is being fully protected!

Wow his music is better off in someone else's hands. Did you even think about that before you typed it. If he were alive he would not have had to move anything anywhere. He could bring someone in to work on it and set things up for them and since he was alive why would have needed to do that?

This is needed now because he is not around anymore.

I respectfully disagree, Laura. When he was alive he permitted the vault area to become damp, disorganized, dirty (mold and dust on tapes) and less than professionally climate controlled. Those are facts. Another fact is that when he was alive he DIDN'T bring in a team to organize, clean, inventory, digitize, etc. He left his musical legacy to rot away. I believe this say something profoundly sad about his mental/emotional state that is probably tied in to his increasing use of drugs. You frequently point to his 'high functioning' to rebut those who refer to his drug addiction. I point to the neglected physical condition of the vault, the neglected LEGAL state of the vault as evidenced by the lack of a will and the neglect of his legacy and his most valuable asset (far exceeding the worth of RE, costumes, musical instruments and gold bars)...the contents of the vault...as evidence that he wasn't functioning very well at all.

Go back and listen to some of the interviews Dave Hampton did he did not discribe the vault in that manner and neither did Ian Boxhill. In fact Dave was hired about a decade ago to straighten things up in the vault. Prince went back to the vault and pulled material from it according to David. Would it have not been hard to do if things were all moldy? Some fool paid 75k for one of Prince's boots so do not be quick to think that his other assests are worth less then his music and since real estate less then moldy tapes?

Please put a name to those comments concerning the vault?

He had an LLC for the publishing, he was his own admin, he left about 40 million in real estate with no liens or mortages, he owned the masters and had a plan for Paisley Park. He even put his catalogue on a streaming platform and got 3 million for doing it.

It is not the fault of Prince that greedy laywers have tried to over turn business structures he had in place. It is the fault of his greedy ass older sibs that he did not have a will because based on their continual irrational behavior and the same behavior during his dad's death you can see why he willed nothing to them. The court is overseeing everything and things are actually getting done.

I firmly believe that if he willed his assests to his sibs nothing would be happening right now at all.

I also do not believe and will never believe that a drug addled man was sitting on a stage playing the piano, traveling the world, interacting with people, riding a damm bicycle, still chasing women and completly wasted 24/7 on drugs. Now if you want to believe that go ahead but Prince must be one hell of superhuman to pull that shit off.

I think this is the most positive move that has been made regarding the music. Obviously someone is actually thinking about the music in terms of it being preserved as it's not cheap to store items at Iron Mountain. All of these items will be digitalized and therefore preserved for eternity. This is what I wanted to happen to Prince's music, videos, legacy. I may not be alive to get to enjoy it all, but I'm glad that this is being done. Who knows, maybe we will get an album of unheard songs that will be released in order to pay the bill for Iron Mountain? I don't know if Paisley Park tours would be able to cover the overhead or not. I don't know what they pull in monthly/yearly. What I do know is that I am glad this has been done to preserve Prince's legacy. That's what it's all about, isn't it? HIS LEGACY.....

Nice stories from Mike Hampton, but there were more engineers who worked there and had relayed their concerns and frustration (to deaf ears) about how careless the vaults were maintained (from dust to even mold) and how deteriorated the contents were...
The CC unit died years ago and was never fixed, there was a water incident (hence the mold) there were tape cans half open lying around with layers of dust on them etc.

Neversin.

* Correction: I asked some (former) employees and they all confirmed the CC units were fixed in the early 2000's... They were still not fiunctioning in 2001 though during the Celebration event...
The state of Paisley Park wasn't a problem (regarding mold and such) but I was only talking about the vaults...

[Edited 10/12/17 7:24am]

I have heard these stories too but he just did not care. Music came to him easily and, unlike many here, he did not consider his oldest stuff to be his best stuff. I think this is partially why he just did not care about putting $$ into preservation Prince was a guy who looked forward only it seems. It certainly feels consistent with the artist I followed all these many many years. Someone I was in contact with once said whenever he mentioned hi resolution files or anything like that, Prince's eyes would begin to roll. He just did not care.. What a contrast with Jimmmy Page and David Gilmour woh oversaw the remasters of some of their classic albums.

Prince was a very different guy.

So why is some of the material in there in such a bad state? Paisley Park was primarily a recording studio it was never intended to be used to preserve music over long periods of time. Even if Paisely Park was retro fitted to hold store his music it still wouldn't be good enough to prevent its degradation.

Iron Mountain is a purpose built facility to preserve items over DECADES and maintained by engineers and scientists.

If you wanted to cryogenically freeze your body for preservation would you make your own facility at your own home? or would you rather use a purpose built laboratory/hospital? SAME PRINCIPLES APPLY

laurarichardson said:

Let’s not get emotional. Fact is the old material has already degraded and his newer recordings are likely to degrade in the same way in its current environment. As fantastic Paisley Park studios is it’s not environmentally controlled as far as I am aware. To preserve material for decades at a time it needs to be moved. Hopefully the peeps in California are masters in preservation and will no doubt want to digitise the content to it can exist forever.

I don't think anyone is disputing that Iron Mountain is a top class facility, but do we not think there are fantastic secure storage and digitisation companies in Minneapolis....... you know, the city he was from, supported, and chose to keep as his home and place of work?

If there's an issue with the vault maintenance, why not spend the money on fixing it?

You are wrong Laura. In an interview with Dave Hampton (former technical director of Paisley Park in Minneapolis) on The Prince Podcast website, starting at 31:35, he discusses the vault.

.
LINK: http://podcastjuice.net/c...e-podcast/

.
Dave basically says in the interview that a lot of stuff that Prince wanted to be pulled out of the vault to work on or to glean ideas from wouldn't play. He had a conversation several times with Prince regarding the condition of the tapes he pulled out and why they were shedding and why they're not working. He would also tell Prince the plan that they needed to implement in order to save the tapes in the vault from any further damage, which, according to Dave, Prince didn't want to do that.

.

Also, read my previous post for more evidence of Prince's neglect of his vault.

Thank you for your candor and willingness to tell the truth...which is in such short supply around here.

You know, riding a bike, visiting a record store, playing a piano and singing and throwing a party has nothing to do with preserving and protecting ones' musical legacy and the deteriorating physical manifestations of your career.

So you are saying there are world class secure storage and digitisation companies located in Minneapolis? Not only that but 'these companies' are able to provide a gold plated legal guarentee to Comerica Bank that the recordings are in safe hands ?.....nah your arguement is all hypothetical and doubt similar companies exist in Minneapolis that can provide the same assurances.

As for the physical vault itself its not a clean lab or clinical facility....the fact is if you want to preserve his master tapes it has to be kept in a clincial grade labatory (plus being fire / disaster proof), that isn't cheap and if one already exists *no point spending millions* on Paisley Park to upgrade it to that standard.

Sorry must have misread your post. But after looking at Iron Mountain website they do meet or exceed major standards and practices set by following key industry bodies:

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE)
Image Permanence Institute (IPI)
Technology Council of Motion Pictures and Television (TCMPT)
Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA)
National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS)

Iron Mountain also has:

Concrete and steel construction, equipped with closed-circuit cameras, physical intrusion alarms, and magnetic-stripe key card access systems. Fire suppression systems use two-stage pre-action, dry pipe technology to protect film and sound assets from moisture. A full range of climate conditions are available – all the way to 35 degrees Fahrenheit and 25 percent humidity.

I HONESTLY BELIEVE IT IS THE SAFEST PLACE RIGHT NOW TO KEEP PRINCES RECORDINGS.

Looks like Iron Mountain has two facilities in Minnesota--one in St. Paul and one in Bloomington. I don't know if the one in L.A. has more music-related services than the ones in Minnesota, according to the websites...

New court documents show they want to sell the Galpin property...maybe there will be some left after the next tax installment to pay Iron Mountain something too lol

Well if it’s the property where he had the yellow house those parcels are worth $13-$15M (maybe bore now). That must be some tax bill. Unless there are Paisley Park expenses that they’re not able to cover from museum ticket sale revenues?

Wow his music is better off in someone else's hands. Did you even think about that before you typed it. If he were alive he would not have had to move anything anywhere. He could bring someone in to work on it and set things up for them and since he was alive why would have needed to do that?

This is needed now because he is not around anymore.

This is a good move, plain and simple. In fact, I'm surprised they didn't do this already.

I spend millions (in my day job) securing off site evidence that needs to be far more secure than music and I use Iron Mountain, who are one of only a few companies that offer top level facilities.

The only question I would have is their knowledge of digitisation of music. They offer digitisation, but music archiving might not be there speciality. That said, the article doesn't confirm they will be the ones doing the digitisation.

Hopefully they will use a specialist.

This website has more information on their services: http://www.ironmountain.c...vices.aspx They work with the Grammys and major film studios so I think the material is in good hands.

Sounds good. I use them for document digitisation and physical evidence storage and they do a great job. So if they have a music wing, I'd trust them more than may other parties.

Sounds like you would know whether or not the L.A. facility would have more music-related services than St. Paul...

Afraid not. I use their UK service for mass storage, and some digitisation in Paris and Hanover. None of it is music related.
