When I Lay My Hands On You: appreciation thread

For me, one of the most under-rated Prince songs is When I Lay My Hands on You. It is not trashed, but it seems to me that it usually is considered a middle of the pack good Prince song. When I first heard the song a year or so ago, I felt like I was hearing some of his 80s songs for the first time. It sounded so different and unexpected. The trippy ecstasy of the music corresponds well with the sexual trip he wants to take the woman on in the song. It is also has that raw sound that is reminiscent of his 80s music, yet still sounds unique! I thought perhaps I might just be infatuated with the song, and it would become dull with repeated listenings. To the contrary, there is much joy in repetition!

Has anyone else had strong reactions to this song?

Absolutely love this song! I was blown away when I first heard it. I love the Santana part. This song live is even better, but this recording is top notch for him imo.

Absolutely. There is something about this song that has that particular effect, even to some extent with the recorded version. Some of his other songs are great in there own way, but don't have this spellbinding and almost eerie impact. If he had a whole album like this who would need acid!

Great song. I remember hearing it when it first came out. It was different and almost daring. I especially loved the guitar effect, it made the song stronger. Was there ever a whole video made for it or is it really just a clip?

I love it. I first heard it live at North Sea Jazz in 2011. I hadn't been keeping track of Prince latest work, so I didn't even know the song existed. It was an instant hit for me! It's got some good old Prince lines like "only I know where the deepest part of your river flows" and a great chorus that sticks in your head unlike so many of his other slow songs that just go in one ear and out the other.
One of his best songs from the 2000s!

When this first came out it gave me chills - feel like the npgmc releases do get passed over quite often.
