Well, I can't say my moments of stupidity have been rare, but I've been blessed to have some wonderful women--grandmothers, aunts, mother, cousins, and now wife--in my life. As my father would always say whenever someone told him that he had a good son, "His mother did a good job, and I was just smart enough to stay out of the way until she told me what to do as well." And, I must give them both credit because they were divorced by the time I was one, and I never experienced "baby mama drama." I literally didn't know what it was because my parents decided that their child was more important than their failed relationship.

I was at one of the London, UK shows on the One Nite Alone... tour where people who purchased tickets through NPGMC got access to the soundcheck. He was chatty during the soundcheck and invited audience members up on stage including a girl who sang an amazing How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore and I remember Prince making a joke about how she made him look bad or similar...

i remember that article, been trying to find it for years, that one was memorable, the guy hated prince. wish i could find it.

It was "I Would Die 4 U" and "Baby, I'm a Star." There's a great story about how Prince waited until the very last minute to confirm that he was coming and going to perform. And, he requested a boatload of passes for all the folks he was bringing. I don't remember the details, but it was, basically, Prince being Prince. Also, I remember being very angry at this one music critic who discussed Prince almost hitting himself in the face with the microphone, saying "James Brown never hit himself with the microphone." He stated, "I apologize to all the women in the audience. I try to treat my mic like I treat my women...with tender love and care." But, still, it just goes to show that, when people (critics) provide these outlandish critiques, most of those critiques are just that--outlandish.

I remember that article being online maybe a couple of years ago because I almost downloaded and saved it, but, for whatever reason, I didn't. What's funny is that rarely do negative reviews of anything peak my interest, unless there is some real discussion/analysis of craft. But, as you state, it was clear that this writer just didn't like Prince. But, I always found that article interesting because it indicated the hate that Prince got from both sides of the fence. This dude clearly didn't like Prince because he felt that Prince was either ripping off the legacy of James Brown and black music or that Prince was selling out the legacy of James Brown and black music. And, of course, while Prince has always been praised, to some degree, for honoring the past and building upon it, there were also a few critics that didn't like Prince simply because old people hate the art by the next generation and often only see it is derivative of their generation's music. At any rate, dude clearly just didn't like Prince. And, when readers can tell that, it makes the actual review/discussion of the art less credible.

The only other negative review that stayed with me was a review of Controversy, in which at the end of the article, the author states something to the effect of "Well, I guess that's just what you'll always get with this guy--lots of promise and potential but very little fulfillment." I remember when 1999 and then Purple Rain was released thinking about that article and that author and wondering, "Well, I wonder if that's enough fulfillment for dude?"

i think that article was in creem but it's been over 30 years so i'm not sure. he had nothing good to say other than about Prince's Little Red Corvette, he couldn't deny that one and he really criticized P's falsetto and said something like he could have a hit until he dropped it. I'd run across people that hated prince to that degree but they were people in my church or older musicians or what have you who mainly just didn't like the sexual stuff, most of the journalists, as prince said in all the critics love you in new york, thought he was "cool cuz you're from the old school".

i think i found the issue but can't find the article, it's called "Prince, the royal scam"
