SweetKathleen

I thought I had seen something very early with Prince inviting an audience member onstage for a glass of wine? Something in the back of my head thinks that this was inspired by someone Prince knew....idk. Anyone else remember something like this?

I miss you my friend --jj, me, and many others

The first time I saw him do it was on the Diamonds and Pearls tour in July 1992. A few people danced on stage during Push, the finale of the show.

Do you mean that about Big Chick's leaving Prince, or Prince's inviting fans onstage?
If it's the latter, would you care to elaborate, please? smile

Yes, the Purple Rain Tour seems like the first time it happened, at least as a regular occurrence. Then, he seemed to stop inviting fans on stage for the next few tours until he invited a fan on stage during the Rock-in-Rio Show. I don't remember it as much with the Diamonds & Pearls Tour, but with the Act I Tour during the breakdown of "The Continental" and Prince rapping "Get on Up," they would have the Soul Train Line with fans. And, of course, fans were invited on stage during the Act II Tour for the finale.

Plenty of info there, thanks 1725topp!

Were you present at any of these shows (or perhaps one of the lucky ones)?

I got to see Prince open for Rick James in Memphis, TN, and experienced the Purple Rain Tour in Memphis as well. Then, after that, I didn't see Prince again until the Lovesexy Tour in New Orleans and then Act I in Atlanta. After that, I saw every major US tour as well as a few one-off shows with several shows at Paisley Park. I also saw the NPG play at Bunkers Bar one night, and just before Prince was about to take the stage, some drunk chick who kept getting too close caused him to leave. What I remember most is Sonny T, sitting at the stage, looking baffled as he was waiting for Prince to come to the stage. He, Morris Hayes, and the others had to be told that Prince had left. Man, folks in the bar almost killed that lady.

*

I never got on stage with Prince. As someone who was raised around live music, I was never one for getting on stage. In fact, I spent most of my life wondering why folks would do it. You can dance in your seat, and you are not disrupting the flow of the show. Then, this year in fact, because I was the only one in the audience who knew that the band was playing "If the Kid Can't Make You Cum," while Morris was talking, I was asked to come on stage. I soooo didn't want to go on stage, but I just thought it would be really rude not to go after being asked. So, I did the Bird on stage, and my wife laughed at me the entire way home as she knew my feelings about "idiots always trying to get on stage."

The first time I remember it as a regular thing was during the "One Night Alone" tour. He'd bring fans onstage during the sound check, and then he'd bring some onstage for "1+1+1 = 3/Love Rollercoaster".

Wow, it looks like you've had a rich experience of various Prince shows from different eras, were lucky enough to see him at Paisley Park and you even did the bird with The Time! What more could one want! And nevermind about not getting onstage with Prince - especially if this wasn't your cup of tea. You wonder why folks do it? Well there are those who just want to share a moment with their idol and volunteer to go when there is a general invitation. But sometimes Prince would invite a person directly, and in that case, I don't think you really had a choice! When Prince asked you to dance, you just danced! lol

I would love to take credit, but my father--either being a very visionary father or a very bad father--decided to take his eleven-year-old son backstage while his best friend Bo was doing stage work as either a lighting and sound guy. (Bo worked lighting and sound for various concerts so I'm not sure what he was working that night.) Now, here comes the really interesting lesson in parenting. Because there was so much "work" happening backstage, my father and Bo thought it would be safer for me if I sat in the audience rather than backstage as I wouldn't be in people's way. I'm still not certain that I was meant to stay for the entire show, but, before I knew it, the lights were dimming, and Prince was performing. At one point during the show, during "Head" iirc, I saw a woman almost fall onto the floor in what looked like she had the holy ghost--that was all to which I had to compare it--and I thought to myself, "My mother has no idea where I am." And, sure enough, when my father finally took me home, I distinctly remember hearing my mother yell, "You took him where!?!" For years after that, my father would always say, "Your mother was just mad that I didn't take her." As an aside, Bo couldn't come to the house for a few weeks after that because he knew my mother was looking for him as well. Yet, I think he finally made it up to her with some Teddy Pendergrass tickets. The irony has never been lost on me that my mother took tickets to see a Pendergrass show after complaining that Prince was too sexually suggestive. Of course, she was a grown woman, but still....

You are right. I can't fault anyone for dancing when Prince demands that we dance. As I rethink my position, I'll admit that "dancing" is the main point whether on stage or in my seat.

I get your point, but my signing sounds like someone is strangling cats in a potato sack. Even when I was in the church youth choir--because when you are young that make you do something--the choir director made a point to tell me, "Young man, the Bible says we are to make a joyful noise to the Lord. In your case, clapping and humming will be as joyful as it gets." I would have been offended, but I only joined the choir because they wouldn't let me join the junior deacons because one Sunday before communion I drank most of the grape juice and ate most of the crackers. I know I was wrong, but black church services last all day, and I was hungry as hell. Anyway, I get your point; I just make it a point not to sing so loudly. Speaking of bad and loud signing, does anyone else ever get the feeling when they are listening to a live bootleg that the same terrible singing fan seems to follow Prince around the globe and manage to get on most of the bootlegs? Maybe it's just me.

I was there both nights. One of the fans invited onstage was actually a backup singer from a Brazilian band called Blitz. They danced over his piano and it was so cool. Obviously he didn´t know her and seemed surprised she was dancing nicely to the rhythm.

OF4S, Why did you stop the clip there? Keep it going to the part where the guy in the white jacket cops a feel as Prince runs pass him. On the one hand, I think it's funny, but on the other hand, I just can't believe that someone thought it was cool to do that. Hence, why I've always worried whenever Prince invited folks on stage. Yet, in this case, the guy feels Prince up from the audience.

That was the story for a lot of folks. Came as Rick fans and left as Prince fans. Still, we can only hope that one day great video and audio of those shows are released.

Yet, in this case, the guy feels Prince up from the audience.

oh 1725topp my brother got to see Prince open for Rick James in Ft Worth Texas in 1980. He was there because he was a huge Rick James fan, but left a Prince fan. I owe my love of Prince to

my brothers.

That was the story for a lot of folks. Came as Rick fans and left as Prince fans. Still, we can only hope that one day great video and audio of those shows are released.

the truth, i only have their stories of what it was like, but i am grateful for that!!!

Yes, that guy. So, the guy that felt up Prince at the Grammy's is Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington!?! (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) :^) I never noticed that he kinda looks likes Hilton-Jacobs. I guess the extra puffy perm kept me from noticing the resemblance.
