Yes, it is a very moving song, but something strikes me.

Jesus didn't actually turn stones into bread (though he was tempted by Satan to do it).

"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God"" (Matthew 4:1-4).

Not sure if Prince knew this at the time he wrote the song or if he just followed what had been said in the USA for Africa song which also made the same (deliverate or not) mistake (they all sing "As God has shown us by turning stones to bread").

Other than this important detail, a great song!

It is a reference/response to the "We are the World" lyrics. One stanza goes:

"Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand"

The core part is still false, regardless of the beauty of the words that surround it.

Can something fictional be false?

Actually, it can though they are having a different conversation than the one that you are trying to inject/force upon their conversation. For instance, while we all know that the DC or Marvel universes are "fictional," the narratives of those universes have an "accepted" order. As such, if one is trying to comment on those universes or build other works of art based on those universes, and one does not follow the "order" or "accepted narratives" of those universes, then that new work can be "false" or "flawed," unless, of course, the goal of the creator of that new work is to create a new universe with a new order. As such, since both songs are based on the accepted order and truth of a particular ideology and universe, in this case that ideology/universe being Christianity, then they are both "flawed" or "false" if they don't follow the rules/truths of that ideology/universe. That doesn't mean that they are not great works of art. It just means that they may, to a small degree, fail in teaching the message that they both desire to teach if folks receiving those works are bothered by the inconsistencies. And, we know that some folks are bothered by inconsistencies in works of art more than others. For example, my wife can't watch the film Down in the Delta because it has palm trees, and there are no palm trees in the Delta. Yet, for me, on the other hand, the palm trees don't distract from the great writing, great acting, and wonderful message of the film. So, with all of that said, yes, something fictional can be false or flawed or inconsistent. And, it varies from person to person how much or to what amount that flaw impacts one's ability to enjoy that art. I still love "For the Tears in Your Eyes" even if I know that in the ideology or narrative of Christianity that Jesus never turned stone to bread. Hell, I hate that they continue to change how Peter Parker got his powers as well as various other elements of the story regarding his powers, but I continue to watch the latest Spider-Man movie.

Yes it does.
Came across this a few weeks ago. What a beautiful expression.
I love how he looks up at us so earnestly at the end. "Can you hear me?"

That always bugged me. How someone didn't know that before they recorded those lyrics is beyond me. I think they sometimes get it confused with the loaves and fishes story, and even that story was multiplying what was present, not creating 8 from M.

Yeah, yeah. The lyrics also say, "He made the blind see and the dumb understand" - which is an incorrect interpretation of "dumb" that was used only because it fit the rhyme.

It was over 30 years ago. Let it go.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yes, strange how out of all the people involved, not one managed to have those lyrics changed, and then Prince repeating the exact same? I mean he grew up in a Christian environment and it is not like we are talking about an obscure part of the Bible... Years have gone by and it still puzzles me.

It's minor, but surely the Christian community that loved the song(s) saw it as a glaring example. Then again, Prince's religiosity at the time was more quasi- than firmly planted. It was a street knowledge, whereas later on it became book knowledge.

Oddly I never thought about him repeating that line in his song. I never put the two together, but it's sorta cool if that was his intent. I just always think of him singing "a better day" in "Alphabet St".

In those early days Prince never seemed like some reading type, so those mistakes are somehow unintentional and naive. Always seemed like man of his caliber didn't have time 4 that (reading) he just absorbed everything around him, trying to transform all that zeitgeist into something eternal . And probably had so much fire inside him that those blasting sparks were too flashy causing some illumination that even Prince was not fully aware of, but he put them into melodies and make some traces 4 us to find our way back home.

But if Prince had gone back and changed the lyrics, as he did with "The Cross" or "Controversy" 99 percent of us would be ticked off just as we were when he did it with those two songs. It worked 4 the song in that moment in time and got the meaning across~

This is so accurate!
People carry on over anything nowadays.
It's a lyric. Not a reference ffs.

well before anyone suggest I Google it; I did already. Would someone be so kind as to enlighten me on what lyrics he changed in Controversy? I know about The Cross. And while you're at it, can you please give me the year that Larry Graham stopped touring/performing with Prince. Thanks!!! (I can't lie, I didn't Goggle that one).
