A marvelous song. He wore the flannel, he attempted stage dives, but Prince never really got grunge did he. He was still channeling his gangster glam, typhoon and starting on his finger waves. I love the coat. A progression from his Christopher Tracey and Sign O the times coats.

Just been having a flick through the videos on the channel - checking out the number of views, for curiosity's sake - noticed there is no Purple Rain video on there...would anyone know why, or am I missing something?

This is a great song! Another one I used to do at karaoke.

The thing I love about the song itself is the mistake in it. Near the end, during the "na na na naaa na naaa" chants, there's a break in the song. The band seems to stop for a couple of beats, then comes back on the downbeat. It was actually a boo-boo on Michael B's. part. While the band was recording the song in the studio, Michael was playing so hard that his headphones fell off the back of his head. He quickly reached behind, put them back on and returned playing. There was supposed to be a fill bu,t instead, there was nothing from the drummer. That pause in the song wasn't meant to be, but Prince liked it so much, he left it in.

It happens at the 3:30 mark.

Always annoyed me that this song stalled at number 44...it should have been a MUCH bigger hit. Such a great tune.

It really does. I assume that they tweaked around it after the fact, but yeah that's why it's there. Michael B. told that story long ago. I think it's one of those things that make a song extra special, from any artist.

Nicely said, yes.

This song is one of Prince's most beautiful, comforting, and hopeful songs to me. So clear, so beautifully arranged. The vocals and music sound blended so well together.

Just uptempo enough to not be a ballad, but just the right speed to whistle to or sing along.

I also love how he just starts the song from 0 to 60, no lead in music, just "go time".

Perfect singalong and air guitar song!

I don't think this was a good choice for a single.I can see why it didn't really catch on with the record-buying public.

I simply saw it as a nod to what was happening at the time. He never to my knowledge discussed Grunge or Kurt Cobain etc. He did mention he liked the Offspring at the time in an interview (a non-grunge band but a current band receiving MTV airplay at the time)

Yes, people, did stage dive before grunge and wear flannel (alert the press), but I see the timing of Prince using it in this video suspiciously likely he was making a reference to a then-current trend. The video is glam, romantic and luscious so definitely not grunge you are right in that respect. But let me ask this question. How many times did PRINCE wear flannel before this video? Never except perhaps as a child in the cold Minneapolis winter. Just like Prince was dropping in DJ's and hip hop slang, I thought the flannel and the stage dive might have been a little taste of current trends. I will admit that when it came to stage diving in concert Mayte probably fell into the human sea more than Prince ever did.

Let's be honest, it's more of a piano jump than a stage dive...with regards the flannel, I see this more of a nod to lumberjacks than grunge...perhaps Prince was acknowledging his love of Michael Palin?

--He was from a blue-college Midwestern family I am sure he wore flannel. We have seen pics recently of him in street clothes he just did not let himself be photographed wearing regular stuff. [Edited 10/1/17 18:41pm]

Which is exactly why I felt this was a coy reference to current trends. Even the single of "The Morning Papers" used the flannel color on the cover. He did this on purpose. For most of his career he did not let himself get photographed wearing regular stuff, he did not get photographed without make-up (give or take exceptions). On a regular day he was "clean" as he said on Oprah. The top matched the pants, matched the high-heeled kicks. It was just another reference to get tongues wagging.

I have always viewed the flannel as a definite nod to the 'Sign of the Times' of when this song came out, so i completely agree Robert. But he tweeked the outfit to be more...Princified. I love it

Exactly! Defnitely reference to the trends at the time. Because if maybe he was truly INTO flannel at the time, we'd see it in other videos from the same album. Smlar to how vids from Lovesexy look obvious for that album, or D&P, or Musicology or any of them really
