I find the whole talk about "Prince wouldn't have allowed this or that" to be quite pointless.

In most instances, Prince would have had no issue licensing a song......... for the right price.

If you listen to my interview with Angie Marchese from Paisley Park, Prince owned every single James Bond movie. So a movie like Kingsman is hardly a stretch.

Hmm let's look at the movies he licenced his music for in his lifetime

Girl 6

Happy Feet

Batman

Showgirls

See anything hyper violent in there? I suppose a penguin could give you a nasty nip

"Do Me Baby" for Rush Hour 3?

"Delirious" foCheecheech and Chong movie (not violent but it was a big drug use scene)

"Gett Off" was in "Last Boy Scout"

"Scream 2"

"Innocent Blood"

so it seems the argument over not using a song in a violent movie seems to not hold water.

MOvies are a spectacular way to discover older or more obscure music. Think about it--the music industry is obsessed with youthful artists. But the film industry is not. When they pick soundtrack music for films, they do so with artistic considerations in mind...what fits the moment, or the environment of the scene. As long as they aren't featuring his music to mock him or the 80's, I am cool with it. In some ways, 80's music has been tainted by the overusage of the most mediocre of 80's music being used in comedies making fun of the 80's. (I love Wedding Singer but it does kind of make musicians from teh 80's look ridiculous. Except for that wonderful Billy Idol cameo...LOL.) As long as his music is not featured in films like the Wedding Singer, then I am totally for it.

If I were in charge of his music licensing, I would have two stipulations where films are concerned..

a.) no films making fun of the 80's or Prince himself

b.) Don't overuse the same songs too often. Let's Go Crazy in Kingsmen...but not LGG in 2 more films next year as well.

You are correct. Certain people have no idea how licensing works and that the estate needs the revenue. This also keeps the music out in front of the public. I really fear what will happen when the heirs take over the estate. If they are so against actual money making ventures that pertain to the the music. Hollograms and cover bands are not good ideas at all.

I watched some newer shows/movies and lack of mentioning Prince is something i looked wih fierce tension -- you know, when you are really expecting they will mention Prince in some weird context but nothing happens... Those shows/movies were:

1. San Jupinero (stand alone episode in Black Mirror)

2. Sing Street

Both were heavily situited in the 80's...

Yeah, that Black Mirror episode was crying out for Prince music. Alas, whilst watching it I knew it wasn't going to happen...

Ive actually been watching quite a lot of TV/movies with an 80's soundtrack lately (is it all the rage at the moment?). Not a whiff of Prince music though. It is almost as if Prince wiped himself out of the history books... And maybe he did...

If he wiped himself out of the history no one would have cared when he died.

Rush Hour 3 - action comedy

Scream 2 - D'Angelo cover doesnt count

Last Boy Scout and Innocent Blood both Gett Off. So I'm going to go with a stipulation in the Warners contract he signed. Or a marketing gimmick for D&P

You can count the number of (non-Prince) films he allowed his music in on two hands. Now we will see a flood in any old crap

Rush Hour is a violent action comedy

Scream 2 a cover still has to have permission to be used in a movie by the holder of the song's publishing...(otherwise they would use covers all the time)

Now I happen to know that to get a Prince song for a movie or show they charged something like 2 or 3 times the going rate. And Prince's income source was different than the estate's and the estate has every right to make money off of their property.

Go with money being made from royalties. When he sat up NPG Publishing it was to market songs to TV and film. It said so in the press release and on the website. We do not know what things he would have approved but he did not set up that LLC to not make money.

I see nothing wrong with Prince's music being licensed in new films. It will keep his music alive, expose it to new younger audiences, and most importantly,it will generate income for the estate.

This is great news because it means more money to keep Paisley Park open.

The best scene in the new Kingsman movie is a fight scene with LET'S GO CRAZY in the background. It's the radio edit from the PR soundtrack, not a remake by a cheaper source. Good job estate! Get the music out there to intrigue a new audience. This would have been big $$$$ for the estate, too. Soundtrack listing: http://www.soundtrackmani...track.html [Edited 9/24/17 17:21pm]
