I don't think Prince ever did a metal song "at all".

There are here and there some links to metal. For example Cybersingle, in the use of chorus, or in the guitar ending.

Prince was more into hard rock.
The closest thing to metal, IMO, was that part in the middle of ´Family Name´ (reminded me of Living Colour´s Vernon Reid)

Bizarrely, during the D&P era Prince's guitar sound was reported as including the BOSS Metalzone stomp box, which is generally considered by guitarists to be one of the worst pedals ever released by BOSS. Still I guess Prince something he wanted out of it, that sort of "swarm of bees" thing, which worked with all the extra processing he used in those days.

.

- Yes, Prince loved to use GAIN on the pedals. But in a pop/funk/light rock context

"Hard Rock Lover" fits the bill quite nicely. Well, parts of it. But that was Prince's thing -- creating his own thing out of bits and pieces from all over the place.

Live in concert is when Prince verged on metal.
I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

The day prince died, almost every metal band in existence paid their respects on twitter. It was a sight to behold.

No one with me on the "The Undertaker" trio sessions?
I think it's Prince at his most unmelodic and shredding,
the guitar performance has the pissed off / fuck off / jack you off attitude of hard rock,
and the technical prowess of, say, Steve Vai.

I don't think he ever really played any metal, bar the odd riff-heavy workout live, but he had overlap with bands who are considered metal; both Beautiful Strange and the reworked 3rd Eye Girl version of Lets Go Crazy sound like Soundgarden, albeit the more psychedelic side of them. PretzelbodyLogic is a pretty transparent reworking of Iron Man as well, a fundamental song in metal.

Yep. Then general public might not have known but fellow musicians did. I remember listening to a podcast from Nikki Sixx a day or two after Prince passed and everyone on there talked about what a “shredder” Prince was on guitar.

Yeah, but it's bluesrock. The answer to the question of the OP is simply: no. Metal, that's Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer... Nothing Prince ever did sounded like that.

Parts of Motherless Child he rips....

I agree. Prince was somewhere else during that performance.
The dancing moves where way out there too! lol :-o

My son has exposed my ears to all levels of Metal: Heavy to Satanic.
When he heard Prince's "Motherless Child" he said it wasn't metal.
Thereafter my son brought my Prince music collection up to speed & downloaded them into his iPod. I also have Metal on my iPod.

We attended 2-3 Prince concerts, also.
I'll ♥️ "LemonDrop" 2DN 💋 your "Sugar"

Prince played hard rock, not metal.

"Endorphinmachine"

"Let's Go Crazy"

"Bambi"

"Dreamer"

etc.

It's kinda indus.
Maybe not metal, but we're in heavy territories.
"Industrial Heavy Funk", maybe? biggrin

Metal is Anthrax, Sepultura, I mean picture Prince going
"When Doves Bleed", "Bloody Rain", "I Wish U Hell"...

It comes pretty close.
That's Prince coming after Steve Vai and Stevie Stevens.
But this kind of scales, definetely indus metal, with the tribal electronic drums.
May have influenced Rammstein.

I'm playing my "When Doves Scream" card here.
Ok, it's proto-funk-punk, but it has a bit of metal on the sides.
It's plated.
