Did will.i.am and Miley Cyrus steal Prince sounds?

If you hear will.i.am's and Miley Cyrus' song "Fall Down" the 5 minute and 8 second version: from 4:05 to 4:18, there are moody, Hollywood-esque strings playing.

Maybe it's just me or the strings sound like a Prince song? It reminds me particularly of Claire Fischer's work for the Parade album/ Under The Cherry Moon movie.

What do you think?

I havent heard it ,

but I definately hear so much of Prince in todays music..

and it seems like the 80s drum machine sounds are being revived...

I think all these artists have been listening to Prince just as we have,

and they have been inspired to Up their Game..

smile

EDITED I listened, wished I didnt...

Did anyone say that about Ready For The World, Mint Condition, Usher, Confection, Sneaky Sound System... need I go on? These types threads are ridiculous. Hell, does anyone even know where a gated reverb on a drum sound came from?? Anyone? It wasn't Prince, but he surely used it as his own. Did he steal? Prince certainly borrowed and stole from Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Santana, Parliament, The Ohio Players, and tons more. While ol' boy was original as fuck, let's not fool ourselves here. People are influenced, but is someone stealing a drum sound or a keyboard lick? Pffft.

Rick James. I know you said there's more but Rick specifically deserves a mention when it comes to Prince's influences.

Indeed - Rick James. Prince lifted bing chunks of Rick James' look, sound, and style wholesale. Granted, filtered through Prince and spun in with all the other influences, + Prince's own monstrous talent and originality, it became his own. But you cannot deny Rick James had a massive impact on him.

Bob... Ain't dat a bitch?

I'm not hyper familiar with Fischer's work outside of Prince but from the few things I've heard, it sounded to me like he'd developped a very specific sound for his work with Prince. The Fischer influence is obvious and undeniable on this track but if it was influenced by someone it's Fischer, not Prince himself (even if if it's Fischer thru Prince). The orchestra there is the Czech Symphony Orchestra (http://czechsymphonyorchestra.com/en/index.htm) so it's definitely not a sample, but I wouldn't be surprised if the orchestra arrangements had been made with Fischer/Prince in mind. No big deal, as said by others above artists "borrow" all the time. I do it. Prince did it. We all do it. An artist should be unapologetic about it as long as it's reappropriated, recontextualized and your own work has an originality of its own in which the borrowed elements get dissolved. It's how it works and as Woody Allen once said "if you have to steal, steal from the best" wink
