yes Thank you, Laura. I really hope so. Someone who respects his legacy.

And corrects facts that were proven not to be true.

Like what, for instance?

You have to ask this question.

Indeed. I'd like to know too. Knowing you, it'll be something inconsequential..

.

By the way laurarichardson, where does the "whitewashing" come from? Where does race come into this? And I figured noticing sarcasm was beyond you, even when clearly denoted in text. Thanks for proving me right.

MMjas, no, not you, but laurarichardson. He's famous for hating everything coming from the revolution/wendy&lisa and misreading/exagerating anything that takes his fancy.

.

There's all kind here. I'm sure you know that if there's two Prince fans and they get together that they dislike whatever Prince is to the other person. cool

We know their motives. Someone is going to come along a do a really good documentary on Prince about his music and his life.

You know our motives? What exactly do you think they are? Please explain yourself.

Laura..don't even bother asking. There Are people with suspicious hearts that can not fathom a labour of love because they would would not ever do something like this thrmsrlvrs. Questions like this say more about them than you.

No offense, but it seems that SHE is famous for it because some here have made it that way. I'm not sure I would call discussing her posting history on a book thread a situation of infamy that she is igniting. Best.

You know since you insist on referring to me has a he. I will start calling you a it. It should know that someone jumping on a message shortly after Pronce died and announcing their book is crass and greedy. Nothing it or the authors have to say will change anything about that. Noisy ass people who happen to be the another race who think nothing of embarrassing Prince and his family by dragging up his getting picked on by the football coach and taking food out someone's fridge. That shit was put in the book for embarrassment purposes. It has nothing to do with Prince's legacy or music.

Here you go, bringing race into something where it doesn't belong. These authors wrote a book and a very good one at that. They didn't do anything to embarrass Prince. That was Prince's life, it's what he had to deal with growing up.

What gender do you self-identify as? I'll refer to you as such. "he" was an assumption on my part. No disrespect meant. I am fine with It or They or He or She. As you wish. When you are refering to me in a sentence though, speaking directly to me, grammatically "it" is wrong, as that is third person, whereas in the sentence you are refering to in second person. "you" would be better. Also, you should have written: "I will start calling you an it." Please take some comprehensive reading (and writing) lessons. Literacy makes it easier to communicate with people. It'll save you a lot of trouble, here on this board and in your life in general.

.

You call announcing the book shortly after his death crass & greedy. I do not. Everyone grieved in a different way and wanting to share love for the man isn't crass and writing a book about Prince isn't greedy. (especially give the obvious research and time spent on that book) My initial reaction to his death was a practical one, trying to see a silver lining: maybe we'll finally see the vault material released now. Was that crass? Maybe, it's how I dealt with it, initially.

.

And race? Seriously? What race would that be? The human race? What nationality and self-identified race are you? How does it matter?

.

And embarrasing... Prince was a troubled man. It must have come from his childhood. He wasn't normal on many ways. It, in part, is what draws (many of) us to the man. Putting stuff about his childhood in is not about embarrasing. That's a very silly statement. I'll reread those parts, just to see how they stand out. (they never did for me)

.

Do you want to whitewash his existance? (not race related) You seem to have a narrow view of what people can write about or what parts matter in Prince's life. Are you on the spectrum?

Laura, what does race got to do with it? Are you insinuating they included those two incidents on the book to make Prince look bad because they are white? What nonsense do you speak? Why bring up race in such an aleatory manner?
Besides, why are those incidents embarrassing? It's obvious Prince was picked on as a child growing up, for obvious if injust reasons. He himself has mentioned it many times. People calling him Princess, etc. And stealing food from someone's fridge... Teenagers do that all the time, ramsacking fridges whenver they are at eachother's homes and they get the munchies.
I understand and respect the fact you don't like the book nor the authors, but don't use those arguments to validate your reasoning, they are pretty lame.I for one enjoyed reading the book and would look forward to reading whatever they write next on this subject.

Anytime you go out of your way too mention that someone was so poor they had to take food out of someone else’s fridge when this has nothing to do with their music at all it is done for embarrassment purposes. Please explain what other reason was it necessary to go there? Maybe because you are from another culture you do not understand how putting someone’s personal business out on front street is embarrassing. I am not sure how it is not possible to not know this and I can also understand why Prince did not discuss this type of stuff with the public or the press. How do you think that makes his family looks?

.

Do you want to whitewash his existence? (not race related) You seem to have a narrow view of what people can write about or what parts matter in Prince's life. Are you on the spectrum?

Are you on the spectrum or do you simply not know what the hell you are talking about? Certain people are whitewashing him and they are so clueless they may not even be aware of what they are doing. W+L and even Alan Leeds saying they introduced him to jazz. Do you realize how moronic and condescending that comes across?

Prince’s dad was a jazz musician how would he not have known about Jazz if he grew up in a house with a Jazz musician. It is the same old tired foolishness that black people need someone to teach them something or else we are lost.

They need to stop saying this stuff because they sound crazy and many of Prince’s childhood friends have already spoken in detail about the many older jazz musician in North Minneapolis that were a great influence on Prince. Not telling that story is whitewashing.

The definition of whitewashing that I am refering to.

The text of The New Jim Crow has been identified as being whitewashed due to the bias of its conceptual framework, which omits pertinent African American people and history, as well as politically radical ideas in favor of a more conventional and mainstream perspective. Critics maintain that the text has been whitewashed for white middle-class consumption.[7][8]

Maybe the people who wrote the book or truly clueless and do not realize that some of the things they unearthed were not needed to be known and are embarrassing. I would hope that white people would find someone putting their level of poverty on front street embarrassing but I guess not which makes me thing culturally there is some serious cluelessness going on.

I do not think Prince was taking food out of that fridge just as a teen goofing around. I think he was doing it because he was hungry and I do not think it is something to make fun of or even bother mentioning.

Prince never went into the details about his home situation and even Tyka does not go into the details. I am sure it is embarrasing and upsetting. I sure as hell know it must be embarrassing for his family. I know his cousin Chazz has already said via his Facebook that is his tired of lies about the family. I am sure there have been some and I am sure there are things the family feels are none of our business. I know they certainly could not be happy with these two cashing in on these unpleasnt memories and using the antedotes of old band memeber who have gone on to do nothing professionaly and her just trying to get their five minutes of fame.

Laura, It was a book about Prince and his life. For being so upset about Alex and Laura writing this book, you sure didn't mind when you were reading it.

People are interested in ALL of Prince's life, not just about the music.

Again, it has nothing to do with color, you just don't like it because 2 white people wrote a book about him that was in depth. Get over it. You are always screaming about race, who gives 2 shits what color someones skin is? Everyone here is interested in Prince or else we wouldn't be here.

I am not always screaming about race and I cannot think of any other reason that these two are so clueless. If you can enlighten me.

I also was smart enough not to spend money on this book. Do not assume that because I skimmed it I put money in their pockets. I also question if you know anything about the lawsuit Alex was involved him. He has an axe to grind and that is why he continues to write about Prince.

Someone is going to write a really good book and it will not be these two.

I do know about the lawsuit, because you've informed us numerous times. You think everyone who writes a book about P has an axe to grind. lol

Are you going to have a problem with Kim Berry's book? Or is that one gonna be ok, because she's black??

Yeah, we know you don't like to spend money on books, you'd rather read or skim the bootleg copies, and then pretend to know everything about them. If you've just skimmed over Alex and Laura's book, stop acting like you know everything about it.

I think they have to be clueless or they knew actually what they were doing It can only be one or the other and yes some white people not all are clueless about cultural differences which is mind boggling to me in this day and age.

I think people who lose lawsuits do have an ax grind and since you think you know so much I read Alex's first book and I thought it sucked and was not about to pay money for a redo. You must not know anyone because you certainly do not have to read a bootleg to read a book for free these days. I had a book swap going on when I was in Junior High school.

For your information I even had an exchange via Facebook with some of the people who contributed to the book. Come back with facts

Kim Berry actually know Prince for 28 years these two did not k now him from Adam. At least we know from her comments that she was not even a fan so I expect the naked truth from her at I bel ive it will be cultrualy respectful something I believe these two could have done if they wanted to do so.

.

I'll refer to you as a female from now on. Self chosen names on a message board do not mean anything. You could have been the son of Laura & Richard. In Iceland, for instance, having a name end in "son" indicates you are male.

.

Getting on a message board right after Prince died and announcing your sequel is greedy. The book is not free the last time I checked and he knew he had to strike while the iron was hot. I am also not the only person who thinks he was being a greedy ass.

.

Judging from the content of the book, this was something that was started before Prince died. Announcing it just after his death can also be seen as an act of shared grieving. I guess you're not the only person who chooses the look at the negative angle and only believes that viewpoint. In my opinion, the content of the book, the price of the book, the possible market for a Prince book like this and the communication of the authors on this message board and that I've had with them show them to not be greedy assholes. I think it's a normal reaction, you're anger, from the time you first heard about the book. Holding on to that anger and opinion as long as you have, with the other evidence at hand makes you wrong, in my opinion.

.

I am an African-American and the fact that you think that plays no role with anything Prince every did in his life or career is a part of the problem.

I am certain of the fact that you are African-American (a misnomer of a name on more than one count) has had no influence on what Prince ever did whatsoever. Prince's cultural background has had a huge influence on who he was and how he presented himself. He struggled against being classified as "black" for years (inventing mixed ancestry in the process) and later on spent years trying to emphasize his "blackness" and trying to re-establish credibility.

.

Back to what we were actually talking about, I think the cultural background of a writer isn't very important in trying to write about someone that shared some but not all of that cultural background. Especially since, while a cultural background shapes you and influences you, it's only part of what we are and, as far as I'm concerned, does not define a person.

How do you think that makes his family looks?

.

Living conditions have a huge influence on how children grow up. Prince's childhood and his parent's behaviour was influenced by the financial situation. The fact that Prince went hungry and sometimes may have stolen food from other people is hugely important to how developed and acted later on. It seems he even talked about it a bit.. possibly more than about his son. And you cannot tell me that that didn't influence him either...Talking about it in a casual, social setting is not done. Talking about it in a biography that tries to explain the person and how he grew up is not just justified or warranted, it's required.

.

As to how it makes the family look? Like they were poor. No shame in that. Or do you feel there is?

.

Not telling that story is whitewashing.

.

You seem to have a somewhat narrow understanding of what is acceptable and what not. And respond quite strongly when things go outside those bounds. Even when "normal" society thinks it is no problem at all outside those bounds. That is why I asked about the spectrum. It is not an insult, although you seem to try and use it as such in your using the same question along with your insult.

.

In answer, I am not considered on the spectrum and I generally know what the hell I am talking about and I also keep an open mind. New data can change my opinion on things. I've not seen much evidence of that for you, but I am hoping that it can. Otherwise all this debating on this site would be a bit of a waste of time, no? biggrin

.

As to the whitewashing? It might be a sore point to you, it sure seems like "race" is a bit of a sore point in the US. One of many reasons to hope for change in that country, but I digress. In the case of W+L and the Leeds brothers, they did introduce Prince to some jazz. And to other voicings of chords. The evidence is there in the music he released. I think the distinction here is that they did not introduce him to jazz (that would indeed be a silly statement), but that they did introduce him to certain jazz artists. People that love music (and most musicians are) usually talk about music a lot and share music they love. That way they introduce eachother into new (to them) music. Me, I'm thankful that through loving Prince, other friends (some musicians, some not) introduced me to Sly, P-Funk, Joni and Ray Charles, amongst other artists. My mom played soul quite a lot, but there were many styles of soul/R&B/funk/whateveryoucallit that she didn't introduce me to. Others did. By the same token, Wendy and Lisa and Alan and Eric Leeds introduced Prince to music he didn't know yet. Some of it jazz.

.

As to ignoring the jazz influence through his dad.. I'm sure there was some, but listening to his music, it doesn't really stand out much until roughly Parade. His other early influences stand out much more. I can understand why jazz isn't talked much until he actually started to incorporate it, which was when Wendy and Lisa and Eric Leeds had a big influence on his music, to the point of Prince actually collaborating with them on an almost equal basis on some songs (though definitely not all).

.

While I'm sure that cultural backgrounds and the powers that be in the segregated country that is the USA have an influence on how the story gets told, I'm not sure that "race" is that much of an influence in how Prince's story is told. It'd be interesting to hear from all people involved, bandmembers, dancers, staff, etc. how much it was a part of everyday goings on in Princeworld. It's always been downplayed in interviews (by Prince and others) and I'm sure there was a bit more culture clashing going on than described, it'd be interesting to hear to what extend it had an influence and what parts of life in Princeworld it touched. It might be sensitive enough that it would be near impossible to get to the truth of it though. Nobody wants to be branded racist for pointing out certain things, just like it's easy to overstate things if you are just look through the prism of race.

.

Would you agree?

Laura, It was a book about Prince and his life. For being so upset about Alex and Laura writing this book, you sure didn't mind when you were reading it.

People are interested in ALL of Prince's life, not just about the music.

Again, it has nothing to do with color, you just don't like it because 2 white people wrote a book about him that was in depth. Get over it. You are always screaming about race, who gives 2 shits what color someones skin is? Everyone here is interested in Prince or else we wouldn't be here.

when people don't care that is when they miss the whole point and think it is screaming. it is

just that right there when some says something so offhanded like that^^^ again "who gives 2........."

seriously sad if you don't realize. Black people didn't make the color of someones skin

significant, white people did!!!! they said it was ugly and bad and damaged, now black people

are just suppose to listen and take those type of statements^^^^ and go sit down!!!!!!!!!!??????

Are you flipping kidding me!!!!

and i'm not mad at you, just totally bewildered, stunned...

sorry but white people shouldn't have made skin tone an issue in the first place.

and i know they all aren't to blame but statements like that give me pause with the ones who claim it

isn't an issue or say that don't give a flip.

See underlined above...

IMO, a large part of race relation problems have to do with people who make the claim they don't see color. It shows a complete lack of wanting to have a realistic discussion. Unless you're actually color blind, OF COURSE you see color. If you don't treat people any differently based on their color, then that is commendable, and that is a reasonable defense.

Simply put, if you tell someone you don't see color, you're lying to them, and why should they take seriously anything that you have to say on the matter? IE of course their defenses are going to automatically be raised because you are clearly lying.

I believe that is completely out of context. I don't believe Prince had ANY struggle against being classified as black, as a black man. He wanted to perform music not limited to the "black" music genre [scene]. That is light years different from what you stated above.

Also, the author's [possible] lack of understanding of the intricacies and nuances of the black culture could be very important (significant) in how they frame the subject. And while you may feel your cultural background doesn't define you, Prince might have felt it defined him. He wouldn't be alone in that feeling.

I have a problem with the way they put this book together and their motiviations. Other writers who are white have written better books maybe because they were culturaly aware.

I'm not lying to anybody, and don't call me a liar. We all bleed the same color. And I'll say it again, skin color has nothing to do with this book nor should it have been brought into this thread, but the same one who brought it into this thread, always brings color up.

I'm all for a realistic discussion, but it doesn't belong on this thread.

I treat all people the same, I don't care what color of skin they have or what religion or non religion they practice. How about you?
