This list is representative of sales. I wonder how many copies have been illegally downloaded off of the net? Still, pretty impressive sales for an album that's 30+ years old.

Probably not a ton of illegal downloads. Free streaming almost completely killed P2P music theft. At least of albums that are on Spotify.

Not that streaming is lucrative... But streaming IS factored into these charts. 10 song sales (even if it's the same song by 10 different people) and 1500 song streams is considered the equivalent of selling a single album.

Updated 2017 sales in US

ALBUM SALES WEEK 34

23 - 234,000 - SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND - Beatles ( 5,032,000 )

47 - 128,000 - PURPLE RAIN - Prince & the Revolution ( 3,698,000 )

81 - 96,000 - THE JOSHUA TREE - U2 ( 3,745,000 ).

.

In these 128k copies, the original album sold at least 60.000 copies, including 40.000 on vinyl.

I wonder how much 3CD versions have been really sold. These are not encouraging sales to release another reedition in the future. Still no word about a 30th anniversary reedition of SOTT or a 35th anniversary of 1999.

.

Since Sharon Nelson said it was only up to WB to release deluxe editions of their catalogue, this is realy embarassing.

Then where are these numbers from because soundscan, riaa, and billboard use streaming equivalents last time I checked. Sincere curiosity here.

Billboard has "pure sales " charts, separated from the "streaming + sales charts".

Record sales are down overall and will be until the end of time. WB spent .50 cents promoting it so they made a nice chuck of change. This album is 30 years old and most milliunals and y's do not even have an interest in the music of their own generation much less music that was created before they were born.

128k copies sold in 2017. 3.6m is total sales since Soundscan started tracking sales.

Now that streaming counts in the RIAA certification, TVBOP should be recertified at 3 PLATINUM and PURPLE RAIN at 16*PLATINUM.

I don't understand. is this the Deluxe then? if not why isn't the 3,698,000 added to earlier sales since 1984?

Before soundscan it was kind of murky with certifications. I think it was largely based on units shipped to stores minus units returned. There are actually more than a few records with high certifications that sold very few copies, but that the label literally dumped rather than returning.

Makes sense that they'd keep those things separate, but it should still be counting toward certifications.

It should be Purple Rain as a whole, not just deluxe, but including deluxe.

3.6 million sold for a record that was big 7 years before soundscan is amazingly good. I think 128k sold this year alone is encouraging considering so many people bought it last year, but I came into the industry after album sales tanked. Also encouraged by that number with low promo and probably not a lot of cost on WB's side.

Highly doubtful...This re-release was in hell development during more than 3 years, and Prince was contractually paid for this. Just like everybody else involved in this project, including Susan Rogers. Some even say that some tracks were negociated from personnal tapes, such as My Destiny / Roadhouse garden.

They also did some mastering work on some tapes with poor sound.

Give it time, even re-releases take some time. We already got Purple Rain this year, i wouldn't mind wait another year for '1999 Deluxe'. lol
