When you have time listen to both interviews. I suspect that no one takes the time to listen to what she has to say at all.

If it is the youtube video can you give us a mark where it begins.

I listen and read a lot of her stuff.
I'm asking because this thread isn't a general Jill Jones thread

Prince Graffiti Bridge Handwritten Notes

Prince’s vision for Graffiti Bridge - “A musical fantasy shot on theatrical sets”

Early handwritten notes related to the development of the 1990 film Graffiti Bridge, written entirely by Prince in pencil on two lightly lined sheets of notebook paper, circa 1987. The first sheet, consists of two short drafts of Prince’s working vision for the film, with Prince heading the first summary “Unfulfilled dreams,” before crossing it over in blue ballpoint; the cleaner, more thorough bottom summary, in full: “This is a musical fantasy shot on theatrical sets but without any of the physical limitations of theatre. The very latest in lighting technology would be integrated into the set design in a manner that has never been used in film.” The second sheet, consists of notes related to several of the film’s characters, in full: “More discussion of the Bridge between Joshua & Sax / Vienna add 2 / Vienna ‘What does he see in her’ / When they were together they were always fighting / Oh yeah what do they / Not the suit baby line / Make Ruthie more of a poet frustrated that writes on walls. / Page 17 Gruff and Puff crazy tangent / Page 18—Camille wishes he was as crazy as me.” I

In mid-September of 1987, Prince finished his first script for a musical film project entitled Graffiti Bridge, which featured himself in the lead role as Camille, and costarred Madonna as his former flame, Ruthie Washington. In keeping with his vision of “a musical fantasy shot on theatrical sets,” Prince planned to cast several of his own band members in the film, with these notes mentioning several of their character names—Atlanta Bliss as Joshua, Eric Leeds as Sax, Cat Glover as Vienna, Greg Brooks as Gruff, and Wally Safford as Puff. In mid-October, a brief three-day script conference with Madonna proved disastrous, with the singer-actress publicly ridiculing the script and dismissing any potential collaboration. As a result, the original Graffiti Bridge script was abandoned and the project placed on hiatus until 1989. Graffiti Bridge continued to have script problems and underwent three more changes before a screenplay was finalized on February 7, 1990; the script alterations effectively made the film a quasi-sequel to Purple Rain.

Thank you for this, very interesting. I had heard rumors of a "Camille" movie, but from my understanding it was based on a french dancer that was transexual. Again, rumors and my memory is very fuzzy.

The information you provided pretty much squashed that. I think the original concept would have been better. I am very surprised that this was start in 87, during SOTT.

I believe there are probably 6-7 different variations of GB.
Prince did confirm in a 1997-98 interview that Camille was inspired by the French hermaphrodite dancer.

.

If I remember correctly in 1985 Prince talked about a GB concept film he wanted to do. He was talking about overcoming depression and certain issues with music. He said it was all connected with him and the band in 1980/81.

.

"I'm going to make a film about it---not the next one(UTCM),but the one after that. I've wanted to make it for three years now." -Prince 1985

.

Yeah it was latter 1987 period, but I believe the concept he had for a while. I believe during the latter 87 period he started making music with Mavis for the film like Melody Cool.

Also the Coco Boys movie concept was started during the Parade era, and that 'battle of the bands' part of it was incorporated into Graffiti Bridge.

If I'm not mistaken 'Graffiti Bridge' was supposed to happen earlier. And the Batman soundtrack and all the failed attempts with GB backed it up.

You are a wealth of information!!!! I cannot thank you enough. There are a lot of intriquing parts in your information. The overcoming depression stands out. It reminds me of the Oprah interview for Emancipation where Prince said he was in therapy. I could have misunterstood that.

With GB being a long process, I wonder if that kinda hindered it as well. I think the tie-in with PR was just to green light the project so to speak.

Thanks again.

Jill Jones on the unfinished second Paisley Park album: We (Jones and Prince) were kind of at two different roads. The song (“Boom Boom”) was from 1982 and it seemed forced. He kept remixing it. I went to do the video, but, it was late, it was too late. And I just ended up going back to New York, got married and waited until my contract expired. During this time he called me-- and I was at a friend's house-- and said, "you don't have any charisma, you should dye your hair black and you need to get breast implants like Brigitte Nielsen." I was furious... Dickens (CEO of Warner Brothers UK) was instrumental at one point with Roger Davies, my manager, when we were trying to complete my second album alone. Without Prince. But, Prince rejected every attempt we tried.

Steve Parks talks about the background of this image/painting

"I had to get Day and Chavez into it. I had to make the black and white girl look a little bit more like Jill Jones, but it wasn't originally set up to be Jill Jones."

Graffiti%20Bridge%20Painting--Steve%20Parke.jpg

The original painting that was later used for the Graffiti Bridge Soundtrack. Courtesy of Steve Parke

The Graffiti Bridge album cover actually arose out of my figuring, "I've got to get a job." I'd connected with Prince on the Lovesexy Tour and I was getting bit and pieces of work here and there. But, I hadn't solidified anything. I said well, that was cool, that was a nice ride, time to move on to the next thing.

One of the things I was trying to do with that painting-- before it got associated with Graffiti Bridge-- (was that) I had a connection with Prince, so, I might as well put Prince in it. I thought if Prince is going to see this, I thought what hasn't he done? What hasn't been a theme in what he's done?

I just thought of a lot of cool elements that I thought would go well into it. The weird part was (later) seeing all these elements in the movie. I had no idea. Nobody gave me a script. I was kind of on the same page with him at that time. It was weird.

I sent it off to my friend Levi, who had been showing Prince my work for a while. I sent a transparency, I didn't send the actual painting. The actual painting is double the size, like an big-fold album cover. I just randomly chose that size.

Levi said "You know, Prince has got that transparency sitting at his desk... He kind of looks at it every day." I said "Huh? Okay, well that's good." He said "I think he might want to use it or something." That's what ended up happening.

Prince called me up at one point and told me how much he liked it, which was really cool. The biggest thing was I had to add some things in (the painting): I had to add Morris Day and I had to add Ingrid Chavez. It was just at the edge of digital, so, I literally had to take sandpaper to the painting surface and sandpaper out some of the stuff I had already put in. It wasn't a big deal, it was just background.

I had to get Day and Chavez back into it. I had to make the black and white girl look a little bit more like Jill Jones, but, it wasn't originally set up to be Jill Jones. It was interesting. Prince changed his jacket from red to black on the cover.
The process for that was as weird as it could be. It was not somebody calling me up and saying "Hey, I want you to do this." I did it and it ended up being used. I was beside myself, to say the least. What a strange way for that to work out, but, I'm certainly not ungrateful.

I always think you can work real hard towards a goal and there are certain of things going on to make it work for you. I feel like all the stars aligned properly for that to happen. Whatever stars those were, I'm happy they aligned. I know I heard back from Levi pretty quickly that Prince kept looking at it (the painting). Maybe I was not aware, but, (the film "Graffiti Bridge") may have been in production at that time. Eventually, I did become aware of it, because, obviously (they said) we'd like this for the movie soundtrack. I don't know where it quite fell into line, but, it must have been in pre-production, because, they knew who was in the cast.

Yeah Prince was being really vindictive during this period.

Jill said the new people in Paisly Park in 89-90 she didn't like and she said she got the label 'bitch' then. She said it was just a totally different vibe and scene from the pre-88 group.

She mirrors very similar what Dr Fink Miko Weaver and Sheila E and even Cat expressed

"My Baby Knows How To Love Me" and "Flesh and Blood" were two other songs that Prince was going to use for her second album

I believe Flesh & Blood were introduced by Jill and another guy,

she said Prince reproduced the song and gave it that 1990s 'New Jack Swing' vibe.
She said it sounded good and no disrespect to those doing that music,

but that that was not were she was at musically or sonically

It was all right there in front of JJ. But because there was also friendship it was probably harder to see until after they fell away. I think it probably still hasn't fully hit her that it had a big part in her Prince relation.

How vain of you, to think you understand it better than she does.

Is Vain the correct word? I don't think it is.

I appreciate and respect JJ. The fact that this is all you had to say or contribute says more about you.

When I talked to her earlier this year, it was clear she was still processing this stuff.
And her 'quote' "Some guys give you flowers, Prince gave you an album" something like that.
It was something that she came to an awareness of.
.
I don't think I'm understanding it better than she does. She is definately still in the grieving process, and processing what has happened.

.

What I said is common with most relationships. In it we don't always see the 'bigger view'.

A lot of times people who witness it 'outside the love' see things apparent that we do not.

Yes. She was so young too, and probably revered Prince.

That is the norm on this board. People that were involved with Prince know nothing. Jill has said in numerous interviews that she knew what Prince was up to all the time.

He looked her in the face and told her they were going to still be together as a couple despite his engagement to Susannah Melvoin but they could not be seen in public anymore.

How would she not have known what was in front of her when he was setting her up with an apartment in New York to be his east coast mistress.

Well Laurarichardson who likes to snarl and fight with everyone, who also like to correct everyone as if he knows it all...

You still kept yelling at us that Sheila E didn't release any singles for her 3rd album.

.

Yeah she knew, but when you are IN the relationship and even outside of it sometimes, you are caught up in what is happening or the pheromones.
.
She did not really have the opportunity to an 'end' to the relationship and for 20+ years they never spoke again. That stuff can turn around in you for years unresolved. They finally spoke again in 2016, but now the processing out has to happen.

Do you have a degree in phycologist or consulting? You have no fucking idea what is still unresolved. If you took the time to listen to the numerous interviews she has done in the last year you would know that her issues with him were resolved when she decided to leave.

These are all comments that came out of her mouth not what some person on the internet thinks.

I have no words for your peusdo phsyco babble.

As far as Sheila E is concerned I am sorry I did not know about the singles that were releashed in Japan. Do you even know anything about the music business at all? Do you know why record companies dump songs in Japan or Outer Mongolia? It is because they are done with promoting the record and Sheila has explained numerous times why she was done at that time with being a band leader. She was not going to promote that record in the appropriate manner and WB was not going to put money into promoting it if she was going to be off for two years playing in Prince's band. Why can't you figure this out. Singles being releashed and a video mean nothing if the artist is off doing something else.

I think you spend zero time listening to anything certain associates have to say and then make up your own babble.

Listen to Jill's interviews/ She is very clear about her relationship with Prince were she stood and how in the end most of the women actually became friends and were civil with each other which is what Prince wanted in the first place. This is all stuff coming out her mouth. She is not yelling or being crazy she is explaining what the stituation was at the time which is not the narrative you want. Too bad.

I have always wondered why people didn't talk about what happened behind closed doors,
And how everyone ended up civil most of the time.
Now how did that Princey achieve this?

At that point (late 80s),I think Prince still had that Vanity 6 mindset with his female artists. He still wanted them to present themselves as sex objects, singing sexy songs.Jill wanted to do a more mature album and that's where the conflict began. For him to suggest that she get breast implants is just.......crazy nuts disbelief

I remember a few people like Sheila E, Lisa Coleman and I think Bobby Z talking about how that period was so non stop busy and went by so fast... that might have had part to do with it. And maybe, their place in the music vision meant more than that personal stuff.

Yeah, he must have been angry with her to make that comment. I think it came after she said she was done with promoting the album, almost like saying she didn't believe in the music or something.

Sheila E's 4th album seemed to paint the picture of a clueless direction. The glamorous Life was a very adult album, Romance 1600 felt more like a jam album and Sheila E was a strong album with very mature songs.

Too bad.

I have always wondered why people didn't talk about what happened behind closed doors, And how everyone ended up civil most of the time. Now how did that Princey achieve this?

I remember a few people like Sheila E, Lisa Coleman and I think Bobby Z talking about how that period was so non stop busy and went by so fast... that might have had part to do with it. And maybe, their place in the music vision meant more than that personal stuff.

Yes. All of this. The latter especially explains a lot about Prince and the musicians who were around him, probably always.

Yeah, he must have been angry with her to make that comment. I think it came after she said she was done with promoting the album, almost like saying she didn't believe in the music or something.

Sheila E's 4th album seemed to paint the picture of a clueless direction. The glamorous Life was a very adult album, Romance 1600 felt more like a jam album and Sheila E was a strong album with very mature songs.

when Sheila and Jill decided that they didn't wanna go down that route,Prince found a new princess,Carmen Elektra, who was willing to do it biggrin

The second album... My mother passed away in '95. When she was diagnosed in cancer in '94, I had a deal with London Records. Steve Fargnoli hooked me up with them. My contract expired with Prince in 1993 on April 15... which I remember because it was seven years to the day. When my mom passed...I didn't want to sing. I don't think I handled it as professionally as I should have. I wrote a letter to my manager that said “You're just too busy going through the corporate world, because you don't know what the fuck you're doing.” And I faxed it. And we were dropped... I (later) recorded (the album Two) with Chris Bruce and it was cathartic. I had a new boyfriend at the time and that was a nightmare. (I) just had to get it all out. That record came and it was supposed to come. (The song) "Gorgeous Wonder" is about my daughter and she just saved me in so many ways. I just ended up going into interior design through friends. It was very trying and tricky. I remember (one time) that I was bartending and the RZA (from the Wu-Tang Clan) came in and said “you're Jill Jones” and I was like “No, I don't understand” and I pretended like I was French. Don't let your pride swallow you up...because that is a mistake. Everything's fixable and your good friends would never make you feel bad about it...

I didn't know about her being an interior designer. Interesting. That makes me like her even more. Also the fact that she worked behind a bar after her second album came out tells me that she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. She is the real deal - no airs or graces.
