Yeah, how does a hologram make eye contact, point at you, and nod and smile in approval... Happened to me; it will never happen with a hologram... confused

It cant and it wont embody the spirit of Prince because its a souless freak of technology!

AND I believe thats what Prince meant when he said "Demonic"

Yes to all that^^^^^ and yes I think that is what he meant by demonic too, soulless.

Why not just render some of the unreleased concerts on 3D? Prince would likely have had no objection to that but I guess it's not such a large revenue stream.

Because while Prince was alive and had ridiculous amounts of what would become...money-making...golden-opportunities...being offered his way.

He flat out refused...like the whole 'Guitar Hero' phenomena...that HE could have very easily RULED...for instance? hmmm

I agree. But I mean in preference to a hologram he definitely wouldn't have approved of. A 3D concert release seems to be more of a happy medium.

Tacky people shouldn't be left in control of Prince's legacy. This is an awful idea.

Yes, this was what I was suggesting above. The technology isn't quite there yet, but had he lived, Prince could have performed in the most intimate of environments and allowed countless people to partake of the experience. Set up a camera array next to Prince playing the piano for example, and the viewer would find themselves sitting with him as he performed. Thinking about the websites that he developed in the mid-late 90s, he seemed to like the idea of creating environments for people to explore and experience, so I'm surprised that he was so dismissive of the technology. Tools like this are only as benign or malevolent as the people using them, and it has the potential to be an interesting means of delivering artistic content.

It's not really possible to simply convert existing 2D footage into true 3D though, you need to shoot with a stereo camera (a 360 degree stereo camera array for VR).

I've converted video into a 3D mesh from pixel data before now - it's an interesting effect, but not true 3D. It yields results similar to Radiohead's “House Of Card's” video, but with much less depth:

As far as I know, when you see the MJ or Tupac holograms dancing, it's not actually them but motion capture performed by a body double and applied to a detailed 3D mesh. They then stitch the faces on, so they're a Frankenstein's monster of sorts. They always have a slightly unnerving, uncanny quality, and that's aside from the moral and philosophical questions it raises.

I believe Prince did see the Tupac hologram, and told his friends, "Please don't let them do that to me."

I can believe that, and he was right.

That man can’t dance for shit. Coming from a chubby, middle-aged man who's let himself go, that’s really saying something. lol Christ, if looks, ethnicity, size and stamp are irrelevant when it comes motion capture, even I’d be a better candidate! I say that with complete confidence, that’s how bad Mark Anthony is.

Only thing making me not have a strong opinion about it at the moment is that so far the stuff we thought the family were going to do hasn't turned out to be exactly how we thought they were going to do it. *fingers crossed* for the moment.

I am in the middle on this. I am not so sure that the way Prince felt in 1998 is still the way he felt almost 20 years later. It's unfortunate that we do not have a more current opinion about this from Prince. The man embraced technology so I find it hard to believe he'd still feel this way if he'd been asked about it again.

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

Well he did say in that 1985 Rolling Stone interview that would be cool for him to materialize in peoples cribs… But I don't think this is what he had in mind

Absolutely disgusting idea. Like a lot of others have said, why do this when there's so much (unseen) footage to be shown? This idea makes me really nervous about what is yet to come from the estate.
