somebody famous HAD a birthday today...

the most eerie part of June has to be that line...

why would he sing it in the past tense?

My take on the song??

The whole song is about...

a dream he had... where he died...

or maybe it was his fear of dying that he couldn't stop thinking about

Pasta simmers on the stove in June...

--simmers means ideas simmering in the back of his mind during his dream

if you simmer about something... you're in inward turmoil

It's Prince thinking about his birthday bc it's June...

Makes no sense yet, but it will soon

--Confused by his dream, unclear on what he truly believes in...

--bc he talks one way and acts another--constant turmoil--he's thinking about death on his birthday

Conversation starters come way too hard

--Introducing the truth about his life is difficult

Nobody wants to be the martyr,

--doesnt want to feel shame

playin' the wrong cards

--4 coming out and saying he's an addict

Why did you come to this planet?

--talking to himself, bc all he wants to do is drugs so he questions his existence

Why did you come to this life?

--talking to himself again, bc all he wants to do is drugs so he questions his life... inward turmoil

How can you be everybody's dream,

--talking to himself, how can he be a rock legend one instant

and still be somebody's wife?

--talking to himself, yet how can he be insignificant the next

--being Somebody’s wife means that your nothing… no significant value

Tell me, what did you have for lunch today?

--talking to himself, upset at himelf bc he knows he didn't eat lunch bc he doesn't care about food anymore

That's right, how would I know?
How would I know?

--he's not present anymore in real life bc he's on drugs

You are off somewhere, being free

--talking to himself... telling himself that his mind is on another planet on drugs

while I starve in the lonesome cold.

----talking to himself, telling himself that even though he is high he's really all alone

Our bodies got used to each other

--talking to himself, telling himself that drugs are his norm

Now they're used to the sound
of Richie Havens' voice on the vinyl,
spinning round and round, round and round

--he's soothed by his mind spinning on drugs

Sometimes I feel I was born way too late

--his timing is off bc of the drugs

Shoulda been born on the Woodstock stage

--his way of coming out saying he's using drugs

But I'm just here, waitin', and waitin', and waitin'

--he's high as a kite doing nothing

Somebody famous had a birthday today

--he died in his dream, that's why he's talking in the past tense about himself

All I saw was another full moon

--a full moon signals… werewolves… insanity… and death... which occurs very often during full moons in movies and folk lore…

What's that?

--surprised he's thinking about death

Something's burning on the stove

--the burning signals his death

Must be the pasta
Must be the pasta

--his thoughts
Oh yeah, it's June

--ironically it's his birthday when he has this dream about his death

it's about the Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde addiction caused in him

what's your take? Am I crazy? Or can you relate to some or part of my take on June?

I have no problem with people wanting to interpret lyrics in whatever way is meaningful for them. But I think in this case you're bending them to fit a narrative you've perhaps become fixated on. I might add that the use of 'had' is in no way strange when reflecting on the day's events in the evening.

I think it is more likely to have been written in past tense because he stopped celebrating bdays rather than it being forshadowing.

Why? Because of the obvious to anyone who accepts that Prince was an addict for a very long time... addiction with pills takes years if ever to bring you face to face with the grim reaper...

Seems to me like you're still in denial about Prince's lifelong addiction

Do you know how many songs he wrote that are solely about his addiction? I bet you wouldn't. Because you deny the fact that Prince had a severe drug and sex addiction... I guess you believe he found religion, right? That he stopped cussing because he purified himself in the Lake Minnetonka of Jehovah's Witness... Funny ain't it? No, not that he nearly accidentally killed himself on an airplane two weeks before his demise... but funny that most of you who responded to my post publicly chastised me and said I must be using drugs to have a take on the song like I do... No, what's funny is that you think the song is about pasta simmering on a stove in June... That's not just funny, that's f'n hilarious!!!

So, Prince decides to end Hit n Run with a song about cooking food in the kitchen??

I see...so... your take is he's daydreaming about martyrs and playing the wrong cards in Poker while he's simmering pasta on the stove in June that he accidentally burned the night before and decided to write a song about his kitchen catastrophe because he's a gourmet chef and still upset at himself for burning pasta... which IS funny because pasta doesn't really burn... unless you boil it for 75 minutes until all of the water evaporates and you burn the kitchen down...

so according to you, Prince writes lyrics like a 3rd grader who's still upset he burned his pasta... ...

so tell me Laura and ItsenSzek... why do you like Prince? Why are you on the org? Obviously not because you think he's a poetic lryrical genius because instead of commenting on the lyrics of the song which was all I wrote about in this post... you decided to comment on the drugs that you think I ingested while I wrote the thread... So... let me guide you... your response to my post should be about the lyrics of the song and what you think he meant by his lyrics... FYI (that's an abbreviation meaning "For your Information"), I received 3 private messages agreeing with my post and thanking me for my insight because they were too embarrased to leave a public post after you two ruined the thread accusing me of being on drugs when you know nothing about me... You don't need to apologize to me... but please stop trolling threads... it took me 30 minutes to decipher that song... in case you didn't know... Prince speaks in code in his songs... open for interpretation... he's not going to come out and say he's addicted to pills and blow so I suggest you read between the lines... then you'll be able to appreciate his genius even more...

So...

Little Red Corvette is about a car? Or is it about Prince's first prostitute?

Starfish and Coffee, maple syrup and jam is about breakfast and sea animals? Or is it about drugs?

The Morning Papers is about newpapers... or is it about his critics

Tamborine is about a musical instrument? Or is it about masturbation?

Dig if you will his poetic genius... or don't and take him literally... but please... I said please... respond to the thread...

Or keep on judging people you know nothing about and have never met before...

word to the wise... be kind...

honey attracts more flies than vinegar

that means kindness will get you further in life because you'll have more opportunity

It does not take 30 years to become addicted to these pain pills and he would have been dead years ago. People are prescribed these things after surgeries or placed on them for maintence and get hooked within months. I can also tell you are a newbie everybody knows how Starfish and Coffee came along and it has nothing to do with drugs and none of the other songs you mentioned this some if us think you might be on drug.

These critics have a history with each other, scores to settle, internet "debts" to each other, the mistaken notion that being snarky makes them better people than the rest of us. They are probably clinically depressed and some of them are clearly drunk. I think lots of them are at home all day on disability insurance. biggrin

Seems to me the pasta cooking then burning is a metaphor for the quick passage of time.

Nobody wants to be the martyr and play the wrong cards could be talking about a relationship falling apart where neither partner will let the other one "win" or be the dominant partner for the sake of the relationship. Obviously the one "losing" would be the martyr. flower flower flower flower

I always thought that line followed by, "all I saw was another full moon", was in reference to, "a fool", not, 'full". In other words, he really meant a fool but changed it up by adding the moon part. Perhaps I'm the addicted one. I could be wrong.
