It has nothing to do with being petty. It is pop music looks are important and the musical landscape was all about that going into the 90s. Fink was getting chubby and just looked old.

I do not think he had the look Prince was going for to compete with the New Jack Swing/Hip hop stuff that was going on in music.

It is not unreasonable to be asked to stay in shape when you are in a band.

see rosie gaines, michael bland, mike scott, sonny t and the like...fit m'fers they.

Well and that is your opinion too right?

Cocky doesn't mean it's bad. yes there is an arrogant cocky. But you cannot put that kind of performance on and not be cocky. The cocky and swagger was a part of it.

When Prince's sillouette appeared on the Little Red Corvette video ... that was cockiness. And the whole band had it. When Vanity walked into the space on he Nasty Girl video holding that chain, that was cockiness. And she owned it.

there's a difference between performance and real life, no? I got the impression y'all are mixing those up a bit ... I think the main reason prince was successful for so long time and loved by so many is: he could be whatever he wanted on stage in perfection (oh yes very cocky at times) and kept being himself and evolving and humble at the same time. to be perfectly honest: I don't know one single person who is really successful and cocky ... cockiness irl is used to hide ones insecurities ... successful people with confidence don't need that ... just my humble opinion of course so has one the "right" of being cocky? of course. would it make him extralovable or would it pay off on the long run? rather not ...

not for some. For some artists/musicians they kinda live out their performances.
People like MJ & Prince and some others, got to certain places where their lives revolved around their artistry. I would say in became really apparent in the late 1989- maybe 2000 period that Prince's stage/performance life and real life were the same.

Maybe he was humble, maybe he wasn't. Sometimes more than other times.

On the bad side of cocky. president Donald Trump is very successful and cocky.
Yeah there are a lot of cocky successful people.

Cockiness can also equate to 'fake it till you make it'

Of course we are looking at 'cockiness' from two different standpoints though.
I'm not using it in a bad way clearly. Call it confidence. Swagger, slay

Just when I saw Prince emerge on the Little Red Corvette video in jeans the shiny trench and heels I said 'cocky' In a good way.

ok apparently we have different definitions of cockiness ... since this isn't even one of the terms that would come to my mind talking about donald trump ...

ur right, there actually are ppl who define success with income and power alone while giving nothing about stuff like personal growth, respect or the impact they have/could have ... but those are people who have nothing in common with prince.

I disagree prince's stage persona would have been the same as his real character at any time. he wasn't a musical genius alone but also a marketing and strategic one ... he just showed the world what he wanted us to see and believe ... hence all the things we learned about him during the last year.

why wouldn't cockiness define trump (put aside 'president' Donald trump) he was cocky mf and successful. Even his run for presidency was a cocky move that he didn't even think he was going to win. This isn't about liking him or not.

I mean earlier you said cockiness is used to hide ones insecurities. If that is a definition, I would say it applied to Trump.

.

Well I'm not defining cockiness with Prince in mind. He is a human being. But I'm just dealing with my admiration of Prince and the people with him that rocked the pop culture of the 80s.

.

I still believe that was all Prince living out his life through music. When he said 'I am Music' I believe it, he lived breathed it all. Some parts of course are 'artistic' acts/portrayals. Like Another Lonely Christmas, according to Prince is a fictional song. But I mean overall it was all who Prince was and is. It wasn't generic. The clothing and style etc he wore that stuff at home too.

I think this is the wrong place to discuss trump - president or not.
but ... well ... cocky in my understanding has still something playful and charming within while it can be kinda annoying at the same time ... if that makes any sense ... which makes it match for the rockstar prince but not so much for ... ummm ... u know ... anyone I would rather describe as arrogant, ignorant or narcissistic ...

I'm with U concerning prince's lyrics though we all know how perfect he played with words and meanings and I guess we're all wrong with most of our interpretations. but still: his lyrics don't define the stage persona he created ... I'm not saying they had nothing in common but ... my take in a nutshell: he preferred to be seen as cocky, mystical, weird or even creepy than being misinterpreted in his real honest vulnerability which he was certain nobody would ever understand ...

one other interesting thing, in one of Prince's last interviews, one he demanded be pulled, he said fink couldn't improvise, i was surprised by that, i assumed matt was just such a great keyboardist he had that down. musicians are like that though, like duke ellington said, you can have the greatest concert violinist in the world and there are a lot of things that they can't do. Don't try to tell a musician that though, they are so fucking insecure that they get insulted if you even ask them if they can do this or that.

Prince was high as hell in that interview. Once he read it sober he pulled it

maybe, he was, i didn't think that was why, i thought it was because he spoke about other people negatively, he never did that to his musicians, never. I think it might have slipped out after all these years and he thought better of it later. either way it got out, he didn't sound high to me. he made sense to me as a musician. I just don't think he liked the negativity.

Opiods doesn't make you alert. Prince was just talking off the record and didn't know the jounalist would quote him. And know the things he said doesn't sit well with you, and you have previously tried to write off hi statements as symptoms of alzheimers (!), but I think he was just being honest (for once).

it was a general comment.

Opiods like a lot of drugs can give a person a rush of energy

I was taking some pain pills temporarily for a procedure and I knew when the pills kicked in. I became more energetic, alert, lively etc

Now I haven't been following a lot of the Pills & Drugs discussion.
I remember reading something here about some of the medication Prince was given wasn't perscribed? or that there was some other substances mixed in?

i already said why i thought the guy was saying that, that he was just fed up with years of hearsay from coworkers, fans, friends etc.., it was totally out of character yes, he admitted that during the interview with his "that's why i don't fire back" statement. I think most people's mouths get away from them sometimes, so i wouldn't just assume it's drugs. one more thing, in this age of "beefs" and feuds being fought out on a third party social medium like facebook and youtube, where grown mature men act like little 9 grade girls, it just makes me appreciate the guy even more as time goes on. Even with the bitterness only seeping out this once, he demanded the interview pulled, and really, he didn't even say anything that critical, this is what gives credence to that sound guy who admitted he had issues with Prince but called him a "gentleman" inspite of any of it.

There is a reason if you don't agree with what he said. I'm certain if he'd have said The Beautiful Ones was about Susannah and Wendy wrote Purple Rain some people would have no problem with the interview

1. the story of the Beautiful Ones I specifically heard a long time ago. And it was a story connected to the August 1983 Dance Benefit show that was connected to Susannah and Prince. She & Prince connected at that show. Now the fact that it was also created for the character in the movie is a no brainer.

2. I would definately question why Prince would say 'Wendy wrote Purple Rain' and there would be a problem with him saying that. And I would wrestle with him saying she wrote it.

3. Prince also went on record to say "Remember the Time was Morris' band, he asked me what I should do... I'm just playing the bad guy, but Morris fired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis" -1990.

sussanah was in the picture that early? i thought he was still wrapped up with vanity.

anyhoo, last night i was listening to his last show and Prince was doing this vague thing saying he didn't need a doctor, not a doctor who changed his name to fink rather than funk. Prince usually did cryptic stuff like that, it sounded like he was taking a shot at Fink and making a statement that his playing made Fink's useless, I just wondered why he would do that after all those years, he must have had some reason, and I doubt it was that "he was high" he often did things obtusely and cryptically, all the way back to the start on Bandstand.

Vanity Prince & Susannah met early 83 together @ an award show
Prince met Susannah a few times earlier when at Wendy & Lisa's place thinking it was Wendy.

Susannah was at the 1983 Dance Benefit show and 'officially' connected Prince.

She did vocal work-sessions work on PR era music.
