C-hEiCRXUAE4tN6.jpg

The long-awaited Purple Rain Deluxe is out now.

You can listen on Spotify here. You can purchase it on Amazon, in your local record store, or via the official website at www.officialprincemusic.com

This thread is for discussing the DVD of the Syracuse concert.

syracuse was technically the first Prince concert i witnessed live (simulcast into my living room all the way in Hobart Tasmania on a Sunday afternoon). So glad its finally on dvd after all these yrs.

Watching it again and being able to bring up any tracks at will is fantastic (although it will probably get replayed from beginning til end more often than not). I watched it on vhs so many times over the yrs i still remember the track order: i often have the "syracuse" versions of songs in my head instead of the recorded ones (so glad to have The Hallway Speech and Possessed on cd now).
The epic performance of Purple Rain brang back many memories from Feburary last yr, and made me miss Prince all over again

Another missed opportunity is that the DVD should have contained:

- All 5 music videos, particularly the 3 live music videos.

- The AMA and Grammy TV performances of Purple Rain and Baby, I'm A Star (if it was possible to obtain the rights for those).

.

Besides, I think it would have been reasonable to offer the remastered audio for all the above and the Syracuse show as digital releases, either with a voucher to redeem for people who purchased the physical boxset, or to be purchased individually.

.

Which brings me to this question: is their any website where it is possible to purchase the show digitally?

If PRINCE did not leave permission to REMASTER any of this they are not allowed to.

But this is what he signed off on. I really feel that this was what PRINCE turned over way back when he and WB came to an agreement. Also with the DVD it really depends what it was shot on back then, this is not a concert from 10 years ago it is from over 30+ years ago and its source might just be crappy, I mean it was poorly lit in many spots and very dark and other spots it was OK, and the source might be all they have to work with.

so even though the videos are available with the movie, especially on blu ray, you feel it was a missed opportunity to include them in lower quality on a dvd? ooooooook

Are you saying that you believe that Prince signed off on this entire 4 disc set?

If so, there is no way that Prince signed off on We Can Fuck. No. Way. Nope!

It should have been an obscure concert, maybe the Cincy 3 hour gig. Or the best piano sitdowns.

the only think Prince did with this set is the album remaster. Thats it, warner bros have done the rest. Prince only gave them the original album back, but they wanted more. Thats why they didnt release it. All this extra stuff is from warner bros own music vault. Or whatever it is they have.

The audio is fantastic! So glad they used PCM stereo rather than 5.1DD.

Sure, I wish it looked better, but considering the source, it looks pretty great. I doubt we'll ever see this show look better (but would not mind being proven wrong).

I do have one complaint about the DVD that I suspect NO ONE else will have, and that is that it is not anamorphic. The reason most will never notice or care is because everyone is watching on a flatscreen TV in a widescreen format. Some may complain that the show is not in widescreen but this is actually a good thing as it was not filmed that way. This is the Original Aspect Ratio and it would have to be cropped for that format, meaning we would get less of the image. For me however, I am one of those rare few that is still using my old 65" rear projection (not flat) screen. For me, the image should completely fill the screen, instead, the entire screen is boxed with borders on all 4 sides. I've seen this on blu-ray releases of 1:33 ratio but never on a DVD release. If they had simply made it anamorphic then everybody with a widescreen would see exactly what they are seeing now and those few of us still using older TVs would not have a bordered presentation.

I know most will consider this nitpicking and tell me to get a new TV. I will. When this one dies. And then I won't care anymore either. That's not the point. The point is it wouldn't have cost them more to do this, it's merely an option they failed to include or overlooked because they don't care.

sad Yes... WTF?!?

Thought it was just me, wasn't sure because most of it's so dark and I'm looking at the booklet and posting on the org while watching, but definitely noticed it during Purple Rain.

Seems you have to buy the discs, then rip them. After that you can do whatever. Bonus is that you have lossless audio and you can read the booklet (1 of the 2 reasons I went out and bought it today)

The other issue with it being non-anamorphic is that it's losing a bunch of resolution that way. Not that the source is high quality to begin with but it's 2017 and having 25% fewer pixels than a standard fullscreen DVD is not acceptable.

i've worn the vhs out, seen it a million times, when i was young, i thought that as a live singer he sounded a lot worse, but over the years I've realized that most people sound a lot worse live and that my ears were spoiled by never really hearing live music. As a singer and a dancer, he came light years from 4 years before. Some things I found interesting as a singer, he transposed Little Red Corvette down, a semitone I think, I always wondered why he did that.

That's just a bootleg rip of the video cleaned up a bit, i.e. something that's been out there for years and for free. What we want is the much better audio from this new DVD.

Vulgarity was uncalled for, really.

However, my point was that for one thing not everyone owns a blu-ray player (not that those video-taped music vids would look better on blu-ray than DVD anyway, as evidenced by the quality of the Syracuse show on DVD), and for another thing some people may not have bothered to purchase the 2004 PR edition.

But the bottom line is that, regardless of whether you own those or not, it wouldn't have cost WB a great deal of money or effort to add those videos as bonus on the Syracuse DVD.

I know some people don't care for single edits for example, it depends whether you're a completist or not, but I think it's always better to offer a comprehensive collection if you're gonna do such a boxset. Complaints about there being too much on it can't really be taken seriously as a customer complaint. But complaints about something that should be there not being there is always more of an issue for the record company.
